The list for now:
Blogspot
deviantart (.net, not .com, as that appears to be their image server)
filesmelt.com
Dropbox (including dl.dropboxusercontent.com)
Imageshack
Imgur
localhostr hostr (company name change)
Photobucket
Nuklearpower.com
Nuklearforums.com
sadpanda
snag.gy
Steam (should include any "steampowered" domain)
Tinypic
tumblr
waffleimages

Anticipated FAQ:

I've been here for years and I posted five thousand funny images, will those be kept?

Yes. The plugin only works for posts made after it's installed and activated. We'll tell you in advance. Do note that if you edit an old post after the plugin is active, it will apply to that post - better rehost any images in that post while you're at it.

I usually get the funny pictures I post from a site called IncrediblyHilariousPictures, and I just copy and paste their URLs, so I just submit IncrediblyHilariousPictures for the whitelist, right?

No, cutting down on that sort of thing is the whole point of the plugin. If that's what you do regularly you'll have to start rehosting your stuff. Ideally right now. We will review submissions and only put domains on the whitelist that are supposed to be hotlinked to. No content aggregators.

I use my own hosting, is that okay?

Sure, just give us the domain and we'll pop it into the list. You can PM it if you don't want to make it public.

--- Original OP start follows
Hey everyone, we're preparing to implement a technical method to cut down on image hotlinking, and we need your help to do it!

We want to come up with a whitelist of accepted image hosts and install a plugin. After we activate our plugin images not linked from those sources will no longer show up in new posts. Since we don't especially want to take away anyone's favourite image hoster in the whole world, and since we'd rather do the list in one go, here's the question we need you to answer:

When you post an image, where do you usually upload it?

Once we have the list done we'll move ahead and get this plugin started.

As far as I know you can't link DA images, just the pages.

Anyway, I think you should remove photobucket from the list. Bandwidth is always exceeded so you can't see images either way.

E: Oh yeah, Mediafire has a kinda hidden feature that lets you link to pictures. I rarely ever use it myself.

I usually rely on sadpanda when I want to waste as little time as possible uploading something, with Photobucket as my go-to.

Photobucket does have serious bandwidth issues, but unless you're throwing it around on high traffic sites, it's not really a problem for small galleries to be used on tiny sites, i.e. this one. It's how most people handled Nuklear Wright in the past. Or how POS does (did?) reaction images.

You can but I'm not sure if you're allowed. Can someone who knows their way around DA poke around their ToS and policies and report?

Photobucket should be on the list even if it's overloaded. It works for me most of the time and it's a dedicated image hoster.

I thought it was pretty obvious that removing photobucket was a joke :(

Don't tell me your serious reactions were jokes too. :(

Nothing in their TOS prohibits it (barring cases of theft). Besides, I would imagine they'd just block direct-linking if that were the case.

Yeah, there's nothing in DA that bans hotlinking.

And would tumblr be ok? It's basically an imagehosting/blog site.

PyrosNine

What about Dropbox linking?

Meister
10-11-2012, 03:12 AM
Looks like we can start making that list properly.

ISP hosting is fine, but link only from your own accounts. I'm guessing synk is basically the only one around here who does this so that's not even going to be an issue, just mentioning it for the record. snag.gy really is pretty handy, sadpanda is a no-brainer, dropbox is currently approved in the funpix thread therefore completely okay as well. tumblr doesn't seem to give a shit so what the hell, it goes on the list.

I dunno about deviantart, they're not really an image hoster in that sense. I'm guessing most of you use it to show things you've done and that's alright, but when you use someone else's work you should probably link to the page directly or rehost the image (and link that to the page as a courtesy).

This post is to test that it is working.

This is a post from my Comcast spot and should, thus, not work:
http://home.comcast.net/~synkr0nized/random/probing.jpg

This is a re-post of an image used in one of our picture threads (an imageshack hosted pic):
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/9959/trainerlassbw.png

As seen, this should now be working for all newly-made posts and edits of existing posts from this point forward.
Images on domains not white-listed will be shown as italicized URLS.

So, to re-iterate, this will only effect new posts or any post you go back and edit. Therefor, if you have a domain that you think should be allowed and it is not when you make a future post or edit one after today, that's not a big problem -- if we add it, you merely would have to edit your post to get it to show the image.

I have edited the OP to hold the current "list" for now.

edit: Of course, as you make a post or edit an old one that has one of these domains for its picture(s) and it doesn't allow the image to be displayed, please let us know!

Just had one of my steam screenshots get hosted on cloud-4. Any chance we can get this updated?

Are the images being hosted on a different domain than "dropbox.com"? My use of dropbox hasn't introduced others, but let me know if you are experiencing different.

Are your attempted image posts getting turned into links, or is something else happening?
You seem to be using imgur and not Dropbox, but if you could provide an example of when you've had trouble with Dropbox that might help diagnose any potential issues. (I went through recent post history to see if I could find times when posting images hosted on Dropbox caused issue in case I could fix it quickly.)

---------- Post added at 10:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:35 PM ----------

When I put a Dropbox file in IMG tags, it just doesn't show. That's on Dropbox's end, not ours.

The files I have on there are not public, so make sure yours are public and visible elsewhere (e.g. another forum, hotlinked as part of a web page, etc.).

I've been using imgur due to whenever using dropbox it automatically changes the bbcode image link to an italicized HTML link. all the stuff I would've linked are already made public and sharable.

New Imageshack links no longer seem to work, though I checked and old ones are still showing. So I don't know if they've changed things somewhere that's causing NPF to not recognize it or what.

I was trying to show an image in the "help me find a comic" thread, and this is the link that wasn't working: http://imageshack.com/a/img540/3576/UCgj30.gif

---------- Post added at 05:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:35 PM ----------

"imageshack.us" was how ImageShack was added to our whitelist, but you're using .com.

Changing your URL to .us made it work. Interestingly the URL actually resolves to a longer .us-domain path for the actual image file, regardless of if you use .com or .us in your URL.

Both domains appear to direct to the same thing. Maybe they added the .com later, or we I was too stupid to add both originally? I'll add the .com domain as well.

RickZarber

You had already requested that, I thought I added it, but I see you requested it again. Has "filesmelt.com" not been working for anyone that uses it as an image provider? If so, let me know so I can fix it. If it is working fine, then Bard hopefully you've already been using it with success!
