View Full Version : The Thing Mafia: idea

in honor of halloween a mafia game with no mafia. instead one character is selected as "the thing" who infects other players. Similar to cult every other night they infect one other player. Difference is if the original is killed another infected takes its place. Meaning you have to kill them all to win.

Special units

Medic: can test 2 people a night for infection

Jailer: can lock up one other player. Player cannot vote or become infected but can be tested and lynched.

Security: Each night he can look up security cameras to see who was with another character the night before.

The Thing: Every other night infects another player

Infected: Those taken over by The Thing

Mystery creature: Power will be revealed to player

If it's balanced properly, I'd love this. I'd put some restrictions on the jailer, so that he can't constantly just keep one person locked up, and maybe take some precautions to ensure teh game doesn't have a chance to end on the first day, if the thing already gets lynched.

like, jailer cant imprison the same person twice in a row?

it is abit hard to balance, originally I was going to have one infection a day, but then the thing would be next to impossible to stop.

However I was planning on having a rule where you need more like 75% to be infected. Otherwise once the numbers get low its basically an auto-win.

On a related note I want to know opinions on if the infected should be aware of who else is infected or restrict information somehow

If one person is infected per night, and there's one lynch a day, the thing instantly wins, if the game doesn't end on D1. You'd probably need to balance it differently.

No you didn't. :P


You need a comeback mechanic for the town. Like, some way to ensure they can keep going, even when the thing keeps expanding.

Every time the town misses the Thing, the town's down two players (One killed, one infected). You maybe don't want the infected communicating, so that the town doesn't get super screwed over by the Things voting block growing constantly, and the town's shrinking at an even faster speed.

yea I need some special unit that can also attack the infected, while keeping it hidden who that is. Maybe allow them to work with the medic, so they can do night kills but only with those confirmed infected

Though, quite frankly, i think it's a given that some people are gonna be up for mafia. I'd just create a game for something like 8-12 people, then open signups and see who joins.

Yeah I'll join this too. You can probably expect 10-12 like Gem said as standard now, so as long as you didn't design it with more than that in mind you should be ok, though if you do get more, great.

It's a shame the numbers seem to have fallen off from mafia recently. First one I was in had about 23 people (mlp mafia), but then we got less and less as we went on. This is partly the reason I put my 40k idea on hold, I designed it for 20 players but then with not getting those numbers any more I figured it wasn't worth trying to start it up.

Mafia fluctuates. I think the largest mafia game I've seen was 30 people strong. I think I've run the weakest one so far (6).

It goes up and down as people figure out shit, start bein' shitty to each other, it goes away, it comes back and people remember how fun it is. Just how it goes.

Anyway I'm in.

I assumed the latter, but apparently Aero wants to make sure he'd have enough people before actually designing his game, so let's just wait for what he says.

For the record, How does 48 real world hours sound for one in game day? I want to make sure those with various schedules can put in their two cents

A cap of 72 for days and 48 for nights worked out when I did it, especially since you'll probably go through that more than one in-game day per week when you end them early due to player consensus or everyone submitting their night actions.

Also I'll try this game out.
