I thought it was a little better than the first one but I still hate JJ Abrams whole deal of how he does his stuff.
Also you really won't care about getting spoiled about this movie. I won't do it just out of like, respect I guess but trust me you're going to be like 'That's it? WTF?'

So you're saying I was right to succumb to my burning, overwhelming, all-encompassing apathy towards this new Star Traks franchise. I find this quite helpful, thank you very much Nique.
Does it have Yoda in it? All the best space movies have Yoda in them.

Aw. Saw it today, and I quite enjoyed it. I felt it went quite a way towards mitigating many problems I had with the last one (even if just by paying lip service; ie, the field promotions). Yes, the film retreads a lot familiar ground, and yes, that does weaken it somewhat, but I think I liked the moral outcome of this film better and actually thought it more in line with Roddenberry's vision than many of the original movies. (re: the militarization of starfleet, etc.) My only major gripe came near the end of the film. I thought that saving everyone on the Enterprise felt like a hollow victory when just minutes later thousands of innocent people die when the other ship crashes. So yeah, not nearly a perfect Trek film, but still I felt the pros well outweighed the cons.
That said, greatly I look forward to the next outing, and hope that the plot will be cut from wholly new cloth for once.

are the same person? I know it's an alternate universe, but at this point outside of the core crew are there actually any minority characters left in the Abrahmsverse!Federation?

I'm gonna go with the dumb "Moviexcuse" that the twist would be even more obvious than it already was if they didn't do that.
Mind you, Abrahams actually thought the fooled people with that...

I could have bought it more as part of the reboot had they not included the bit where Young!Spock plumbs Old!Spock for information about Khan. Assuming all other things are equal between the timelines, what the hell happened to make that shift occur.
EDIT: I want a short film of Dr. Bones trying to wrangle that emergency C-section on the Gorn octuplets. They bite, you know.
