So I have recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Y Duos ( S6102B ) and it apparently runs on an older version of the Android OS ( 2.3.6 ). Is there a way to update it and if so, how?

Officially no. But i beleive if you jailbreak it you can force a new version of android on it, but newer versions need more system resources and im not sure if your phone can actually hold it.
I have the Galaxy G Duos, it comes with Android 4.1. My phone is pretty much equivalent to the Galaxy 3. I would imagine if the phone specs are similar, yours could be un-officially updated too... might run a bit heavy here and there... but it can work.

You're stuck with the version of the OS your carrier provides. Any updates should be delivered to you over the air.
However you could jailbreak it, as mentioned, or get yourself root access and install what you want on it. You'll not be able to get support from your carrier anymore as a result, though. I would recommend keeping a backup of the phone as it is prior to rooting or modifying it so that you can go back to that if needed for support.

What Bells said, if there's no official update, there may be an unofficial one out there. My phone's last (official) update was Ice Cream Sandwich but, there are Jelly Bean ROMs out there too.
Google will be your best friend here since, there are usually many tutorials (some even in video form!) for rooting and installing custom ROMs on your phone.
Rooting may void your warranty though and, installing unofficial updates will do it so, you should keep that in mind.
