Brazilian Referee Beheaded by Fans for Killing Player. (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/487093/20130706/otavio-jordao-da-silva-brazil-football-referee.htm)

Shocked spectators at an amateur football match in Brazil witnessed a referee lynched and beheaded by an angry mob after he stabbed a player.

Referee Otavio Jordao da Silva, 20, fatally stabbed footballer Josenir dos Santos Abreu, according to local reports, which happened on Sunday 30 June in Maranhao, Brazil.

Dos Santos Abreu is said to have struck the referee after questioning a decision. In retaliation, Jordao da Silva fatally stabbed the player. It is believed the referee was carrying a knife throughout the match.

Santos Abreu was taken to hospital but died of his injuries en route.

Soon after the fatal attack, a furious crowd of spectators turned their wrath on the referee. He was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered.

The baying mob then proceeded to put Jordao da Silva's head on a stake and placed it in the middle of the football pitch.

Luiz Moraes de Souza, 27, has been arrested over the incident. He has admitted to assaulting the referee but denies killing Jordao da Silva. Police are continuing their search for two more suspects.

They are currently viewing video footage of the incident filmed by a witness with a mobile phone.

In a statement, the regional delegate of Santa Ines, Valter Costa, who is looking into the case, said: "One crime never justifies another crime. Actions likes this do not collaborate with the legality of state law."

The referee's grandmother said: "We were not there to stop this evil. I hope that justice is done, because to see someone you love die in this way is very sad."

What the fuck. What the fuck, man! When I was told about this I thought it was a set up for a punch-line for not losing one's head over a game.

This is some bizarre sick shit right here.

I'd just like to state that Brazil has some pretty crazy areas and I've never visited them and I guess none of the Brazilians here are an indication of the average Brazilian because I highly doubt the others - like me - have gone to a state like this.

This part of the post brought to you by "Why aren't the southernmost 3 states of Brazil and Uruguay an actual country?" propaganda.

Also, interesting to see is that every time I saw this news in Portuguese it explicity said that the ref had thrown the knife at the guy. It was pretty weird.

The whole news? Fucking goddamn crazy.

And this is why sports are inherently worse than anything in nerd culture. Sure you get the occasional fangirl mauling, but not riots and murder.

It has nothing to do with sports or anything of the sort. He stabbed a man who was presumably beloved by the crowd, and they turned their anger onto him and retaliated. Not justly, not appropriately, but I think the whole getting caught up with a crowd thing can pretty much happen with any culture or subculture. Attributing it to sports specifically is no better than people who decry video games for causing violence. It's just fueling into an us vs them mentality without actually addressing any of the issues that really cause the violence.

Makes no difference in the larger picture, but this was some Backwoods amateur local game... just to give a little perspective on things.

Also might somewhat explain why THIS is not all over our local news. Cause not even the major news outlets are making waves of this...

Because, really, no amount of fine detail can take "head on a spike" out of focus... but still... more context can't really hurt.

Wedo have a big problem with certain groups of fans, kinda like fan clubs, that quite a few, borderline on FanAtic Clubs... those usually limit themselves to state-located rivalries, and i guess it exists on any sport anywhere in the world... you get yourusual thugs and criminal scumbag looking for an excuse to fight in the street, break in stores and public places... but nothing like THIS.

Also , i would like to point out that other reports state that the mob "waiting" 1 hours for the cops to arrive. They didn't, that's when they killed the guy. Before that, he was tied and beaten.

Maybe he was trying to but, got his knife out instead.

I really hope that's sarcasm.

Actually it's more a statement to the fact that I was made aware someone had a worse day than me at that moment. I also had gotten down basically losing it emotionally and was getting over bawling my eyes out crying and raging at the assholes in my life (partially because they are assholes and partially from an Adderal-induced mood swing). It was jsut so ridiculous in how it happened for me that I was shaking my head at the thought it actually happened.

Yeah, the dude that had his head impaled on a spike by a mob over a stupid argument in a amateur soccer match surely did have a worst day than yours... probably a couple hundred thousand people all around the globe also did.

Doesn't make it any less assholish of you to try and justify just how knowing that "made your day".

We had a "rule" in this forum about no drunk posting, hopefully we won't ever need one about "no jubilation over death of others"...

I hope it's at least made your week, too, 'cause [for now] that's how long you have until you'll be posting here again.

Edit: If anyone needs the why of this explained, perhaps do yourself a favour and don't post in the news forum for a while.
