So, ok... Build Battlers. It's on Episode 2.
This is a strange show for me, because i like it. There is a lot TO like it. The level of Dumb is right in my sweet spot, there are mysteries. There are promisses of everything getting bigger, there is cool nods to the classic show and gundam legacy, characters are lively and not grating (yet).
If nothing else, this is like a fully fleshed out version of GunPla Builders OVA, with better characterization and plot (maybe) and i'm down to that.
This is the kind of show a brand like gundam needs after sometimes, because we already have teh Grown Up stuff... we have Unicorn, we have The Origin. Those are bigger, flashier, more serious titles... which come around as Gundam turns 30 years old. Which means that the kinds that were 10 when the original series hitted, now probably have kids of their own in the range of 8-12 years old...
so, if you want to renew and refresh your base... this is a decent effort. And if you want to resell, remake, and produce new GunPla toys and stuff then you might as well doe with with a GunPla centric show.
It's also good because the show can cheat. It does't have to show violence, we don't have kids and families being blown up in the first episodes, there is no blood flying everywhere... but you do get some violence in the sense of Gundams being destroyed and blown up. And a small sense of consequece since it's shown that GunPla can actually be physically damaged by these battles...
that brings us to a show that has cool battles, cool action, very nice animation.... everything is lively and colorfull... which im fine with it. For a 20min weekly show, it does it's job quite well.
I was surprised though on how wrong i was by reading the show. The promo art made me put certain characters in certain roles, and i came to found ou that i was totally wrong!
The Rival is not the Rival, it's the partner which is the "Char" from this series!
The cool kid is actually the rival. Which pilots the red Zaku!
THe girl i though would control the Fenice actually is the cutie that controls the Bear Gundam (so, the female role is still a minor support one... gundam was never really progressive in that regards...) and the Fenice belongs to some guy?
Also got to see that the Pilot of the super awesome red Astray custom is some other support kid...
The other girl, that shows up on the opening actually controls a Custom Qubley! And considering that this show's "Char" is the Partner, and that in the original Gundam, the Qubley belongs to Hamam, that was in direct conflict with Char... i'm ok with that! Seems like our final boss.
Other cool nods come to Muthafuggin Ramba Ral ! Who is on the show with his Freaking Gouf! That's an Awesome nod.
Nods goes to NewTypes being called NewTypes, and right from the get go the show being honest to the fact that there is more to this world than meets the eye (Maybe Aliens? Probably not). Episode 2 finishes up with a straight up "Oh and BTW Teleport, K'thx'bai" in the face of the Protagonist... which shows commitmet to making the story larger.
Might still be dumb, but at least it's trying to go somewhere.
For a gundam Fan, 2 episodes in, there is already a lot to talk about and a thousand different ways this could go. Which to me shows a fairly competent show. I can guess where it's going to go, but i cannot be sure. This is good.
The fact that the ending straight up tells me that the Char is going into the Mk2 Custom, tells me that this will turn up into a Rivalry at some point. THis is really as much as i can tell about the show up to this point.
So, this is my Brain Droppings for Gundam BB up to this point... good times!!
