View Full Version : NPF Steam Secret Santa 2013

I wanted to think of a funny subtitle, but i failed... :ohdear:
So, this worked... but it was a bit rushed so we never did manage to organize. Steam sale is coming up, most likely on Nov 27, might be a good date, so let's have a thread for it now.
And please someone take over this thread from me, i just have no clue on how to properly organize this stuff right...
So, here is what we need.
keepig with the model used on 2012, 3 suggestions of gifts (as specific as "Game X" to broad as "Any DLC for any game i have" stuff like that)
Say if you want in, and what is the gift price range you are comfortable with.
Also say your steam handle.
Games are steam primarily (just to streamline everything), but i see no problem in talking about other systems as well.
Suggested date for purchases is the entire duration of the steam sale, with gifts being sent the day after it ends, so everybody gets full access to all deals equally and there is an agreed date for delivery of the gifts.
Now, on feedback... even though we all will be connected via steam, we should talk about the secret santa primarily on the forums, no?
So, what you guys feel is the best? People just openly say who their secret santa is? Give clues and the others try to figure it out? Keep it a secret?
C'mon people, let's get the holiday spirit of savings i gaming going!

What if we just set up a general price range for everyone rather than have people keep track of each person's individual price range? That way no one has to worry about whether they're asking for too much or too little.
What about $15 and under, or $20 and under? I don't remember how, if at all, we worked this for various countries' differences in currency.
EDIT: Oh, also, everyone should post the operating system/etc of the computers they game on so they don't end up with a game they can't run.
Bells
11-15-2013, 03:10 PM
Oh sorry, i didn't explain it. I was thinking of running the average of everyone's price point. Last year we agreed at around $15 was best but that people could go higher if they wanted to. IIRC

Ah, ok. My bad!

I'm in. $15 sounds like a reasonable cap, especially with sales around the corner.

I stuck to the Steams last year, but people shouldn't be limited to that. There's Humble codes and downloads, GOG etc. as well as all those things that aren't games, which I believe we did last year? But the games are much better for international borders.
In terms of sales there's obviously the Black Friday stuff from around the corner, as well as Steam's Christmas sale through the period and past the big day, as well as all the other stuff other sites will do (GreenManGaming, so many better sales than Steam this year, as a hint). I think just generally saying a large time period up until year's end would be best.
Then after the new year we reveal what we gave & to who, and who gave you your thingy. I myself messed with an alternate account to gift, but people may not accept unsolicited friend invites so I say just stick to main account and do away with subtleties on the personal front. Just gets awkward otherwise.
Count me in anyway.

I'm in. My slave paymasters have been kind to me this year, so I'm willing to give a little extra, or gift to multiple people. Hohoho and shit.
Ryong
11-15-2013, 05:20 PM
Aw what the heck, I'm in. I'll go with $15 but I'm getting steam games in Brazilian money which, while worth less than USD has lower prices so there's that.
I accept gifts in PC games, vita games and PSN codes.
Steel Shadow
11-15-2013, 07:45 PM
Yeah, I'll get in on this again. Money, I'll go with whatever you guys go with, I'm not too fussy, and I have to work in £ instead of $ anyway, which requires math I'm not prepared to do or look up.
PC games, Steam stuff... Steam's probably best for me just so some weird region blocks can't crop up - They totally will if you give them the chance.

is there a way to check what games people have? I'd rather do kind of a blind pick, encourage the spread of games we otherwise might not have tried

You can see game libraries on Steam.

Steam Profile > Games > All Games
For non-steam games, you'd have to ask them (through a proxy such as whoever organizes the whole thing so you remain secret).
Anyway, I'm willing to participate again this year.
Also, I agree with RO that it shouldn't be limited exclusively to Steam.
And finally, there should be a span of 2 or 3 days, either near Xmas or after the Steam Xmas sale has ended (probably the latter), where everyone sends their gifts. Last year people were kind of sending their gifts whenever over an entire week, and I feel that contributed to the lack of post secret santa feedback/excitement. So you narrow that window down to 2 or 3 days to account for real life schedules, but you still get that "unwrap our presents as a group" vibe.

Steam has a wishlist for a reason.
If people want something that's not on steam, they should say it in a post.
Bells
11-16-2013, 12:18 PM
Unless people are ok with PM'ing serial keys, we need to stay with systems that allow Gifting, no?
I for example, have origin and steam, and i have bought games on GOG. But i would prefer steam just to keep my stuff organized. But if someone sees i game i wanted cheaper on GOG than on steam, then please, go right ahead y'know...
Same goes if you prefer a certain game on a linux or mac version. sure, it's less common, but if there is the option...
Bottom line, anyone going into this, needs to give a good set of information.
that being said, i think Arcanun is right on this... we need to define a window of purchase and gifting so stuff get more organized.
We also need someone who can pair everybody up and oversee this operation
Aerozord
11-16-2013, 02:47 PM
Anyone know a good program for randomizing pairings of this nature? If so I suggest that person organizes thing

Bells
11-17-2013, 10:39 PM
using that generator we wouldn't need a "Secret Santa Moderator" it would be all automatic, is that right?
If so, great!
We have a good group of people here, if that is ok, maybe we can start putting dates down and information from people?
We need a final date to signup, and someone willing to receive all data and generate.
We also need a date range for delivery of all gifts within those days.
Also, how people like to handle their secret santa? Reveal, not reveal, give clues and others take guesses...? Either way, in-forum feedback should be the way to go. Maybe give clues as to who your scret santa is BEFORE sending the gift?
i think that covers that part.
As for personal data, e-mails should be sent only to who agrees to generate the pairings via PM.
Other than that we would need
Preferred Platforms for gifting (with related Handle or account name)
Preferred genres of games
Link to library of titles (if possible)
3 suggestions of stuff you would like
i think that covers it, no?

Winter. Sales will probably be a little better, or at least a few games people want will go on first/bigger discount.
Bells

The sale right now feels a bit lacklust. On the winter sale we will get the exact same deals or better ones. No way it will be worst. With that in mind, i think winter will be better.

It won't be much better... this is how Steam sales have been the past two years now. That's why I say you should keep an eye out for stuff from GreenMan, Amazon, all the other retailers that offer Steam keys or alternatives. I've noticed Amazon in particular love to beat the price on a Steam sale as quickly as a day afterwards.
Winter sale's pegged for December 19th, FYI.

The offline method for Secret Santa is typically that of filling out information and dropping it into a box/hat, and individuals then later fish out one each.
Last year, in order to make sure that everyone got paired up without knowing who was Santa to whom publicly, I collected the participants' info individually via PMs. I did the matching randomly (I think I just randomized a column of names against a static column of names in Excel, but I might have written a brief function for it), and I was ready to be a Santa to anyone left out if we had odd numbers. Then I sent out each person's relevant game/steam/etc. info in private to their Secret Santa.
I mention this only to offer caution -- if everyone just posts in this thread it is entirely possible that friends and others may take their own initiative and make gift purchases, potentially resulting in duplicates or in some people having multiple Santas where others might not have any.
Ultimately, all that matters is everyone involved has some fun and spreads some holiday cheer!

Thanks for the tips Synk, i actually had overlooked that detail!
Sure thing though, i'll make sure this rolls out fine.
Here is what we'll do... we will lock out entries this SATURDAY. It's quick enough for people to enjoy the current sales but enough time for everybody to join in. Plus, we've been talking about thsi for quite sometime, so people now know this exists. So please, poke eveybody you guys want to invite for this thing.
ANYONE who wants can PM me right now with a contact e-mail alongside their entry. i'll collect these. Anybody who didn't, i'll send a PM SUNDAY 21st asking for it.
Assuming everybody is ok with that, i'll make the pairings and you will all get it via PM between Dec 22nd and Dc 23rd.
That being set, feel free to purchase away!
Considering that people may want to shop around, or may not be online during the actual holidays... you'll all have until December 26 to send your gifts.
Now... pay attention to this part. Cause you have options...
Don't keep this in PM's or Steam chat... bring it HERE ok? If you want to tease your secret santa, give clues to who you picked up before gifting them! If you want to be playfull, give us clues of who is your secret santa after you gift them.
Either way is fine really, as long as you guys have fun and share it here.
Also, taking up the tradition of Santa Synk, if anything fails through or if there is an Odd number of people, i'll take up the gaps.
Cool? Alrighty then... get those PM's going.
PS: The joke Gift this year is Aliens Colonial Marines for 1.99 on amazon for Steam. Consider it a terrible sock stuffing! =3

Apparently Steam will begin region locking some purchases ( such as MGR:R ) because of price differences ( a bunch of games are actually cheaper in Brazil and Russia than everywhere else ).
Just a heads up.

Lots of games that were tagged as ROW (Rest Of World) rather than Russian-specific were getting purchased in that region and traded, either by Russians themselves or foreigners using VPNs. Not surprising.
Lack of PMs with emails is probably because people signed up here already and not seeing the point of this when we have the messaging system here already?

The general idea is that Gift giving happens until Dec 26st . I imagined people would have different schedules for the holidays, so it felts better to have a larger margin of time for it.
You can gift right away if you want to, or wait. If everybody wants to expand the deadline further we can also do that... just have to agree on it right away.
Until then you can poke clues about who you gifted and/or who gifted you if you want right in this thread!

But since i don't know other people's schedule, i didn't want to restrict anybody in case someone couldn't be around on the 26th for any number of reasons.

Okay that's fine. As long as everyone comes back to this thread and brags about posts what they received so we can keep the Secret Santa Hype Train rolling I'll be happy :D

I have my secret santa gift purchased as well, and am also gonna try and send it closer to Christmas; I just hope they don't buy it for themselves in the meantime! XD
But if they do, it's no big deal: Someone else will be getting a gift too then!

Gift gotten, apparently my secret Santa has expensive tastes, maybe they forgot to think of their gifts in American dollars.
OHHOHOHOHOHO!

Meant to send my gift out this morning but Steam Community is down. Likewise, I received my gift from my Secret Santa but can't accept it until Steam comes back. XD
So! Until it returns, here's a clue about my secret santa recipient!
My secret santa does not live in the United States.

You know, with two Canadians, two Europeans, and two South Americans, these non-American hints aren't very effective ::V:

Merry Christmas all!
I'm sending this from hotel wi-fi, I was travelling to family for the holidays.
...And as it happens, my family lives in New Brunswick, aka "That place that got hit by a massive ice storm" and I haven't had power or water for two days and counting, and I'm just leaving this message quickly.
My Steam transactions aren't going through, possibly due to the hotel wi-fi settings? Or I don't know. I'll try to log on once a day if I can, but worst case scenario I'll be back to my wonderful urban internet connection (and water, sweet, sweet water) by Dec 29th.
And that's... my secret Santa hint! If you haven't gotten a gift in the next 72 hours, you might be the lucky recipient. :P
P.S. I scored big! Thank you Anonymous! Metal Gear Rising, SoaSE DLC, *and* D&D Chronicles of Mystara! Thank you!

Merry Christmas !! Stay safe and well there!! Hope it clears up soon.
Also, wow, your secret santa sounds more like a secret admirer!! :smug:
Also, my Secret Santa already received it's gift (it for genderless reference) but hasn't picked up yet, which means it's slow as a slug. Which is a very recent reference that my secret santa is more likely to be the only to understand =3

I got Ys Origin! Thank you, Secret Santa! May your hat never jingle unnecessarily!
Before I rush off to play, a hint as to who mine was! The first letter in their user name is in the first half of the alphabet!

I received Bioshock Infinite's Season Pass
And since everyone is giving out hints I guess I'll do it as well, but I'll be the only one to provide a useful hint.
Okay, no, that's a lie. My Secret Santa lives in one of the Americas :smug:

I got given Spelunky. Because Rogue Legacy only killed me a few hundred times in clearing it once, and my masochism demands more death, more suffering.
My Secret Santa loves certain creatures which I just can't abide. They're almost always magic, because they throw aerodynamics out the window.
Shit, I got Payday2 and Spacebase-DF9. This kinda makes me feel bad about my gift, I think i'll look for something else to give to my pick. Or my secret santa has serious budget issues.
My SS was the star of a Disney movie but I guess it preferred fighting to singing.

Savant, Torchlight II and Bastion. I feel spoiled.
My Secret Santa may or may not be into caroling.

So I've had a spare XCOM Enemy Unknown sitting in my inventory for a while. I tried to gift it to a friend, but they lost their account. Anybody want it?
