It's that time of year again, my friends. Steam is here to take all of our money.

Post your progress/damages here!

I think you mean the SPRING SALE 2013

So far a 2pack of Divekick, and if I can get Valve to agree to remove the region locked version of Skyrim from my account in time I'm getting the legendary edition so I never have to load a VPN again.

I wondered about that. It has a different background image; no autumn leaves, so I assume it's deliberate and not just a typo. WHAT COULD IT MEAN

HEMISPHERES.

Oh-ho. I get it now.

So far I bought Audiosurf for my sister (and totally not just because we have Steam Family Sharing which means it's technically my game now too.).

When Arkham Origins, Stanley Parable and maybe Brutal Legend go on flash sale/daily deal, my wallet had better start saying its prayers.

Of course, American Thanksgiving being tomorrow, I'm likely to be away from the computer for most of this sale. Oh well. Winter Sale is probably just around the corner. XD

I'm interested in Dark Souls but have heard mixed reactions to the PC version. It recommends using a controller, but I probably won't have a controller adapter until Christmas atleast. Are the keyboard + mouse still usable?

Otherwise, I grabbed Deponia since Harvey's New Eyes was really fun. Plan on grabbing the other entries before the sale is up.

Controller is optimal, but apparently people can have a passable experience with keyboard and mouse. Also you are a wise man for taking on ultimate-endgame-bossmode-difficulty point-and-click adventure.

In addition, the controller has to be xinput enabled or it will just not work with Dark Souls. Just a heads up.

So far I have bought nothing on the steam sale, but that other part of the divekick 2 pack went to me.

It really is much lighter than the usual Roguelike, as you can grind your tower if you're having a hard time and if you missed something, just ask for the Architect to lock the castle, you can do it as many times as you want.

rogue legacy is tame, man. Now Risk of Rain? there's a fine example of remorseless destruction that increases exponentially every minute.

I must agree, Risk of Rain is a fantastic clusterfuck of roguelike progression that maintains the right amount of conflicting messages for a good panic.

You must stay and collect items so you can survive the harder encounters, but if you stay too long then the harder encounters come to you and you won't survive.

Using Keyboard on Dark Souls would be a lot easier if the devs had changed the button prompts to keys rather than leaving them exactly the same as they were on Xbox.

Probably going to wait on that controller adapter. Otherwise the game looks promising. At the very least, waiting to grab it allowed me to get it at $6 rather than $10.

And in case you were not aware, mod the game to make it less console port-y shitty. Mainly DSFix, but there's a whole slew of mods nowadays probably.

Also, can anyone give me their opinions on The Cave, Brutal Legend and/or Kentucky Route Zero? Still waiting for those to go on sale as well, but they're not things I HAVE to have.

I wouldn't bother with Dishonored, flash sale or no. It is a shining beacon of mediocrity who's only slight saving grace is interesting combat mechanics. Other than that...it is...overwhelmingly disappointing. Though that's just my opinion. Would hate to see a forumer toss money at something that ends up being wasted.

Yet to play it myself (yay backlog) but the general consensus for Dishonored is the opposite of Skweeb.

9GB is pretty small for a game these days. Your Arkhams go for 19GB, your Max Paynes go for 35GB, and the less said about any RPGs/MMOs with a fair amount of patches and DLCs the better.

It was daily deal already, so you should just wait until the Christmas sale which is just a mere 18 days away. Alternatively, pressure a Secret Santa to get it for you so you can sing their praises/bah humbug them.

My download speed is 200Kb/s if I'm LUCKY. I've been downloading Source Filmmaker for almost a month now, for about an hour or so a day. Someday I'll get to play it. Hopefully before next year's Saxxy awards.

Skyrim took over two weeks to download, and that's only because I let my computer run overnight on the weekends. Arkham City took a week and a half.

With Mac games, I can at least take my macbook to work or school and use the better wifi to download stuff, but with PC only games I'm stuck with crappy rural wireless. So if I'm going to buy games with larger download sizes, I have to be sure they're things I'm willing to wait a few weeks to actually play, while simultaneously allowing my ability to watch Youtube videos suffer while I download.

So yes. I am screwed when it comes to new games. I'm planning on getting Arkham Origins if it goes on a daily deal sale, so I'm expecting to be able to play it sometime before Christmas if I'm lucky. For latest-gen games... yeah I'm totally screwed.

You could always purchase a hard copy instead.

If having it via Steam is vital, borrow a friend's local data/game files. Steam should be able to verify and go from there without having to download it all. You may have to start the download first for it to generate the folders and the like before just canceling out the process and then dumping in the copied directory.

Just to add to this: You should be able to directly copy-paste the game files as they are in the steamapps/common folder. If they're present and you go to install, Steam will "install" them and just do a full verify of the files. That can take quite a while, for me it's about as long as downloading them would take, but it will use little to no bandwidth. Of course, you need to get the files from someone reachable. I used to do this all the time when my first storage drive started to fill up, and I had to make shortcuts from it to my new, secondary drive which Steam was not installed on. Worked like a charm!

Sadly, there's no one nearby who I can try this with-- My sister and I are the only people in the area on Steam, and she is using the same internet as I am. At least we have Steam Family Sharing, though, so we can play each others' games on our own accounts, on each others' computers.

Speaking of, Skyrim (http://www.impulsedriven.com/products/ESD-IMP-W2491?affid=gsnow) is currently $7.49 over at GameStop (via Steam) - I'm not sure if this is a "good deal", but it's about half the $14.99 cost that Steam itself has going for the same product. I'm probably going to purchase it. I'm probably not going to play it for a while, as I'm still working through Dragon Age: Origins (which is awesome) and have yet to start on Dragon Age: Awakenings, but I'm probably going to purchase it at this point, if you guys don't think it's a terrible idea.

I got well over 100 hours logged in Skyrim back in 2011 when it had just launched. At $1.47 per hour, I consider it a pretty good deal, and some day when enough mods finish their polish for it, I'll return and log another 50 most likely. You might some day step back from it and comment "Man, most of the things in this game and game/engine are pretty horrible and lacklustre, I don't even know why I played it for so long instead of moving on..." But that'll be after the hours have been logged, and it'll be too late.

So yes, worth $7.50.

A bit late for BlackFriday/Thanksgiving sale, but importing your Wishlist to Is There Any Deal (http://isthereanydeal.com/) might be useful in the future, since it warns you about any discount the game has in a multitude of stores(You can, of course, choose to be warned only about games that will active on Steam), though it can be a tad annoying at times.

Do also check the website once in a while to see which bundles are currently online.

I would say pick up Tomb Raider now, because Scribblenauts will certainly be cheaper again on the christmas sale. But there is a chance that the new version, unmasked, will also be cheaper so you would have a chance to pick on of those two.

MuMu

Unmasked is also at 50% and I doubt it'll get any cheaper in X-mas since it's still a pretty recent game. I dunno why it isn't the one on the frontpage, maybe Unlimited still is more popular?

The actual game I'm considering buying is Shadow Warrior. Don't ask why, because I don't know either.

I don't know what's going on with today's deals either, Shadow Warrior and Tomb Raider getting pretty big discounts while Unlimited isn't, even though it has been on HB recently, and even Blops is getting an actual discount, even though it's still ridiculous expensive.

And Shadow Warrior looked pretty good from the streams I've watched, pretty solid FPS.

Me during this Steam sale:
"Well, I think I'll just save my money for Arkham Origins. There's nothing else I really want-- Oh hey, Torchlight II is $5. Never finished the original, but II has a larger world and more stuff... Wait, why did I just buy this?! Okay, okay, NOW I'm gonna save my money for Arkh-- Oh hey, Stanley Parable is 80% off."

So following my current patten of Totally Saving My Money For Batman, can anyone tell me if Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition is any good/worth $7? I remember people saying one of the Dragon Age games was pretty good and the other was pretty crap, but I can't remember which was which.

EDIT: Also, Mass Effect 2. The original won't run on my PC, so I'm wondering if it's worth it to try ME2 if I can't play ME1.

Nope.

A) Probably won't run. It did perform better than ME1 on my old rig, though. Curious why ME1 doesn't run on yours?
B) Those games love to give you the worst options if you don't import saves, although given that it's PC you can download custom-tailored files very easily.

Don't get Dragon Age if you can't run ME either, I tried it on my new PC a month or two ago to see how it performed and it still has an insane memory leak. Not to mention that the temperatures went up to full-load levels, which I've NEVER seen on any other game. DA also did that on my old PC, too.

Yeah Vista sucks when it comes to compatablity with anything (hello removing the Legasy systems means that 99% of what worked before now has to be rewritten and companies and engineers are freaking lazy about that) but many places will give you a free update to 7 if you ask politely. Many more places will charge you $20 to upgrade up.

Your computer aside, it's a much more rewarding experience playing through from the first game. There are enough callbacks -- some of which depend on your choices, some of which are just great elements that connect everything into the overall narrative -- that it's definitely worth it, even if the Maco is a giant piece of shit.

What's the specs of your machine like anyway, Mauve? A updated SP2 Visa 64 is rather similar to Windows 7 AFAIK, and it never really gave me any major problems before I switched over to my new machine a few months ago (W7 Pro). In fact I think half of Windows 7 was just to get rid of the Vista stigma, which really was a complete piece-of-cat-regurgitation for too long.

If you're thinking of upgrading sometime Nvidia are still doing a "buy a GTX700 series, get some Arkham Oranges, Ass Pirates and somegamenobodycaresabout for free" promotion thingy, I believe. But that's significantly more money than your average Steam sale. My 760 has successfully consumed all I've thrown at it so far.

A new pc might be something I'd look into eventually, but I'm not too keen on Windows 8 and that seems to be all that's available around here.

I couldn't tell you the specs off the top of my head; I'm on my phone atm. It's a Gateway FX somethin-or-other, probaby 4-5 years old, from an age when Vista 64 was brand new and exciting. So it's fairly old in computer years, but I don't really want a new one till I can afford to move somewhere with better internet. Otherwise I'll spend the rest of my life re-downloading my steam library.

But if you guys have had good luck with ME1 on a Vista 64, maybe I'll grab a copy. It's probably pretty cheap if ME2 is $10.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that! Huh. Guess I'd have to look into costs and the pros/cons of doing that instead of just getting a whole new pc with more hard drive space. (Hardware's not my area of expertise.)

Also I have heard windows 8.1 is pretty good if you can adjust to the new UI I guess. To me it feels too much like a tablet OS ported to a PC at the last minute. It works wonderfully for touchscreens, I'm sure, but I find it a bit annoying with the mouse.

Revising Ocelot
12-02-2013, 08:45 PM
Haven't used 8.1 much, but while it's a little easier to use than regular 8 it also has a bunch of driver issues.

If you want to keep the old HDD, I'd recommend checking around your friends to see if anyone can build a PC for you. Order the parts, throw them at friend, and they'd probably "get" you W7 as well. As for what parts to get, well, draw up a rough budget and we can probably plan a nice setup on the tech forum.

When I got my new machine I had two old 500GB HDDs and bought a new 1TB HDD. Decided to get rid of the oldest HDD and copy everything over to the new 1TB. Most of the installed Steam games on that drive copied over nicely and worked again without a hassle. There were 2 or 3 tricky ones Steam wanted to download again and yet still ran the original copied install afterwards, leaving me with a weird dummy second-install of some stuff that ate my HDD space for a while, until I noticed them and deleted. They were Fallout 3, Bioshock 2* and Arkham City*. All GFWL stuff. SHOCKING COINCIDENCE.

*These aren't GFWL'd now, but I & everyone else had to redownload fresh installs. A dying act of spite.

That should tide me over till the Christmas sale in two weeks, and the inevitable "WInter Sale" that'll show up in January or February. ....Steam wants to make sure we spend the money we got for Christmas on any games we didn't buy during the pre-Christmas sales.

I've started on Torchlight II and am enjoying it immensely. I'm playing as an Engineer, which is the heavy-hitter/tankish character in the game. That's not usually my play style for RPG's (I was the Alchemist in the first installment, and I tend to roll Mages or Rangers in other RPGs) but she's pretty badass. I'm only lv 7 and already I can pretty much clear a room by myself with a two-handed war hammer and my healing droid. I like the variations in pets this time too; It's admittedly kinda silly and I don't know if the different animals have different abilities (I'd assume an owl would be able to carry less than a llama, but I dunno), but it's a fun addition. I have a deer named Winchester and he is a mighty warrior.

Well, you're going to feel silly, but you get the Burst Pistol and Silenced Pistol upgrades just by playing the game and spending salvage to unlock them. A lot of Tomb Raider's DLC that adds small stuff, or singular skills, is actually just there so you can pay real money for unlocks.

Rogue Legacy and Spelunky will be keeping me company for quite some time, I expect.

Also grabbed FFVII on a lark, having never, ever, ever played it before. Somehow, I've managed to avoid learning anything about the game, all these years, besides the identities of the main characters and the fact that Aeris dies. Should be fun. Man, those graphics have not aged well, have they?

I'm disappointed with the fact that i have 11 of you on my steam list that have Dust : An Elysian Tale and have not told me just how gorgeous and awesome this game is.

Oh wow. Best deal i made by FAR.

Hard to not play this with a smile on the face and have all these Muramassa feelings all over. It's great!

Wait, where?

You must live in some kind of utopia. 50 cent is like 30 pence and I haven't seen a vending machine offering coke for less than £1 in years.

This notion both confuses and angers me.

The notion that i first got of a Vending machine selling only tiny 50'cent bobble-heads confuses and angers me...

The last time I got a coke was for about 50 US cents. Vending machines usually (mostly) have those for 10 MXN (1 USD is around 13.30 MXN...I think).

The vending machines around me all seem to be $1.50+. I can buy three liters of (Store brand) soda for the same price as a vending machine soda, or two liters of the real stuff.

I don't drink much soda anyway, but I am now jealous of your magical vending machines.

Wait these actually still exist in the US!? I thought it was some kind of urban legend told among the Soda Tribes.

I was talking about Mexico :V. Still, I used a couple vending machines on my trip to Texas so, there are vending machines there too.
