I lost my D&D friends a while ago. I still think about it from time to time, but I cannot find anyone else who plays. I cannot even find D&D source books at the bookstores. Wutupwitdat?

I think that the independent video game store in my town hosts some games between MtG tournaments, but hell if I can be arsed to show up with my work schedule.

I'm currently in several games and running one over at Giant in the Playground, since forum-based games are nice for not having to actually schedule. I also think that there's decent forum-based D&D communities around minmaxboards and brilliant gameologists, which makes sense since if you look at the homebrew circulation those are the other two sites that are even considered.

No, dandwiki.com doesn't have a D&D community, and if it did everyone would point and laugh at how sad it was.

I tend to hang out at Paizo stuff and get Pathfinder materials for D&D fixes. Of course, I also have a wife who loves to play, so that helps, too. Over on Paizo.com, in the message boards, there's a pretty thriving PbP community. I'm even in a PbP game now!

Also, a couple of us did this (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2r1fs&page=2?AxeChucks-yo#54) today and yesterday, which is pretty awesome, I must say. :D

I've not heard much about the health of Dungeons & Dragons, and what little I have heard hasn't been all that great, though I periodically see things happening with it and/or have people vocally (usually angrily) defend it's health, so there's that as a decent possibility.

I really want to have a local gaming group, but so far I've managed to:
1) talk to one guy about it a few times and give him one of my books (an old 3.5 Core Rule book)
2) run a game of Heroes Kids with some neighborhood kids once (we ate pizza later - it was pretty terrific, I must say)
3) talk to another guy who was really big into D&D in 1st edition (he didn't actually know anything about Advanced or 3rd or 4th), and almost convince him to game with us a few times, before he moved
4) ran into a random guy who gave me a business card that I promptly lost, much to my ever-lasting frustration
5) occasionally hang out at Barnes & Noble and pine over their books (including gaming books) there

... and that's about it.

Pyros rode in a car with someone who got a new old old alleged car, and drove all the way down to South Carolina to finally, have the grand finale of the "Shatter Star" campaign of Pathfinder.

Our group had been whittled down to two, a Cleric and a Witch(me), and the DM, and we hadn't played since last Christmas, and the cleric dude went to App State.

So the Cleric and I finished the Campaign as gamebreaking genre-savvy mofo's, and we decide we missed playing so much, that we have do this kind of road trip again, especially when Cleric dude moves up to Boone, NC, because sometimes you wanna go where everybody only knows you by your character class's name.

Also, disguising yourself as an Ancient Civilizations Cleopatra whenever you meet members or followers of that Ancient Civilization will never work, especially if your CHA is 10, and most Thassilonians remember Sorzcen doing two things that you aren't doing.

Also, if the GM says a building made of centuries old wood isn't flammable, he's lying unless it's a We Be Goblins campaign, wherein that section was written for you and for you and you and you alone.

The rules should allow for anything to be set on fire if enough fire is applied to it.

Don't have Water Walk? Set the water on fire and use Fire Walk!

I still play it with the same group I met 4 years ago, ( almost ) every sunday afternoon.

We mostly play DnD 4e, but we've played some Shadowrun too and I was going to try and run Exalted but it's kind of difficult to learn.

I'm still running a campaign based on that one RPG I was doing a LP of once.

You can't find very many source books in stores right now because WotC stopped printing the most recent edition two years ago in preparation for D&D Next (5th Edition). With two years of no new stock, stores have been pretty much picked clean on materials.

Right now I'm playing in a high level 3.5 game and running my local game store's D&D Encounters program with a 4th Ed table each week.

This Encounters season looks to be very interesting. It's a cooperative dungeon that multiple parties tackle at the same time and sometimes interact with each other at certain points. Our store's groups look forward to yelling across the room at each-other's tables occasionally.

Come to the RP or playing games section, we are all about tabletop games there, as I understand it someone in the hellish mass may be planning a DnD or Pathfinder game.

What little I know about D&D comes from watching various Chris Perkins DM games on Youtube (namely Penny Arcade's Acquisitions Inc games and the Robot Chicken sessions). It looks like it would be a lot of fun with the right group of people and a good DM, but character creation seems pretty complicated.

Tev

Depends on the system and what class you play. You can can crank out character for most editions in minutes. 3rd Edition (and it' update 3.5 as well as its competitive variant Pathfinder) are a bit more complex and require more time and system mastery to get started. Also, as with most systems, the closer you keep to the core books, the faster character creation will be.

The bane of many new players trying to get started is trying to put a character together while the DM and the other players are tossing abilities and powers from eight or more different books at you because they're "better" even though you have no idea what they are talking about or why. Pick a Player's Handbook race and class, don't veer from the content in the PHB for any reason, and then branch out to other stuff once you're comfortable with the system.

4e has a character creation tool, since it has much less content to try and deal with than 3.5.

But hey, new edition is coming out soon and you either pay $20 to get some stuff pre-built until 5th level OR you pay $150 to play normally an edition whose basis for existing is "let's fix what we did wrong last time by completely ignoring why we did what we did last time and so ignoring all the things we did right.".

Oh, we play 3.5 in the chatroom here every Sunday. We've had a decent campaign for a while. Some disputes happen between players and DM, but all in all, it's been pretty fun! Character gen can be a pain, but we've got at least one player who's made like four or five characters so far. Interesting times abounds.

Sure, always happy to have more, and everyone's a new player at some point or other. I'll have a word with our DM when I see her.

Did anyone see the news that WotC are going to have a basic version of the D&D Next that'll be ENTIRELY FREE?Sort of. It's basically a PDF that has about 15% of the information you'd expect to find in the Player's Handbook.

But it's free, so there's that I guess.

We play pathfinder on roll20 in a group some weeks. The upside is that the entire collection is effectively available for free online. (www.d20pfsrd.com) Filia Lantis / Predestin is the GM if anyone remembers him. The system's not terrible. It kind of fixes up some of the meta-gaming brokenness of 3.5 while still being pretty customizable.

Additionally, I sometimes run some one-shot games in 4th edition or whatever setting/system takes my fancy. However, those are usually done in person and involve a rather tongue-in-cheek approach to NPCs. Finding interested people to play is often a chore. I don't really focus on combat or delving as much as a hack and slasher might like, and instead expect players to role play and solve little puzzles and mysteries with people in town and in dungeons to fill time. (As opposed to fight fight fight okay night's over.)

Joined a PBP rpg site to help myself learn D&D/Pathfinder. (I felt bad about jumping into the one on NPF unannounced without any prior experience.) Made my very first character. Started my very first game.

Made my very first roll ever, on a perception check.

Critical fail.

Wow.

Clearly this means I'm getting rid of all the bad rolls now, so I'll have nothing but natural 20's for the rest of the game. Right?

Taking the advice I got here, my first character ever is a warrior, because they seem the easiest to make/play. My second perception check was decidedly meh (rolled an 8, plus +3 modifier), but luckily that was enough for him to notice the giant spider directly above him. Now we'll see if the crappy rolls extend into initiative and combat phases. My luck, he'll stab himself in the eye and die before the spider even has a chance to do anything. XD

In every game there seems to be a dice hole, where all the bad rolls go. Ask RMB.

Sorry to spam the thread, but can someone explain to me how spells work for Clerics in Pathfinder? I'm confused about how many a Level 1 Cleric gets. From what I read, he/she gets four cantrip-like spells, and there's a list of additonal lvl1 spells to choose from, but there's ALSO spells from the two Domains he/she chose. There's no way I should actually get a spell from each Domain, four orisons that don't have daily limits, and X number of standard Lvl 1 Cleric spells. That seems like a lot, even considering I can only prepare x amount per day.

Azisien

Under normal rules, a 1st level Cleric should have...

3 Orisons
2 1st level spells (1+1)
1 1st level Domain spell

You get one Domain spell "slot" per spell level (a 1st level Cleric only knows 1st level spells, or 1 spell level, so 1 Domain spell). You get Orisons and spell casts according to the Cleric table, AND you get BONUS spell slots based on your Wisdom score:
http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html#abilities-and-spellcasters

Cleric table: http://paizo.com/prd/classes/cleric.html

Orisons can be cast unlimited times, it's true, but they aren't particularly amazing.

...I think. Effin' Pathfinder.

Well speak of the...

Looks like I'm going to start playing Pathfinder again soon! As a player! And it'll be on Roll20. I didn't care for that site when it first launched, but they've done a fine job polishing it up. Getting friends to meet up these days is also close to requiring weaponry, so meeting at a virtual tabletop is making this possible. Yay!

I'm thinking of rolling a fighter/rogue and trying my first Evil character. Probably Lawful Evil. Mostly law-abiding chap, power-hungry, with a secret serial killing nightlife.

Add Gametable on top of that.

Okay, I'm in a Pathfinder game and I'm playing a psion. It's a level 5 game. I have some pretty awesome stats to work with: Str 16, Dex 16, Con 10, Int 21, Wis 14, Cha 10. Everyone's characters has a special ability that we can make up. I've currently narrowed ideas down to 2 and they both scale with HD:
1. Something akin to Fire Bending. I can summon fire to use in melee or use as a ranged attack(both use PP). Another thing is being able to 'stick' foes with small fireballs and can delay exploding them up to rounds/level. Another ability is being able to 'cook off'(explode) static fire sources like torches, lanterns and campfires, with further improvements like more fire damage for the first part of the ability and cooking off larger fire sources. I think the ability to see through light sources was another part of it, but the GM might have cut that out when they gave me the choices.

2. The other one was using monk unarmed that scaled with HD as if it was the class, along with initiative bonus every damage die upgrade, as well as the ability to change damage type(pierce, blunt, slash) and a boost to movement speed. The fluff attached sounds pretty nice.

Azisien
07-26-2014, 10:46 AM
I'm not the GM so I don't really choose the resources, I think he's set on Roll20 but I'll refer those other resources to him.

And it looks like my Lawful Evil double life good chap/serial killer is going to be a Skill Monkey Rogue, so we'll see how that goes. I decided that although it'd be good to be great in combat, leading that double life will be better benefited by having a wide array of really good skills.
