My co-worker gave me a CD with an extensive Annette Hanshaw playlist, who, if you don't pay much attention to when you're listening, just sounds like a cheery jazz singer. However, upon listening to the CD a second time, I have concluded that her music is kinda fucked up:
YdBcpgJJGDY
OQnglIYWdPQ
"...I never knew how good it was to be
A slave to one who means the world to me"
[...]
"I'll never leave him alone
I'll make his troubles my own
I love that man better than I do myself
I'm just no good when his arms are about me
What wouldn't do for that man
Oh there's not a thing I wouldn't do for my man"
mOkA6TknMtk
Thing is, maybe I'm imagining it, but I detect some sarcasm in her voice, which kind of makes her music fantastic in a bizarre way.
So, what are you listening to?
Edit: oops, sorry for posting this in the wrong forum. /brainfizzle

Annette Hanshaw can be a trip when you actually look at what she's getting at for sure. I got my first real look at her when I was watching Sita Sings the Blues, since she ends up being the voice of the feelings of Sita from the Ramayana. It works well.
Me I've been out in Japan for a while now, and I've hit on a couple things as I listened to the incomprehensible sounds that come over the airwaves(since I don't speak a lick) but one in particular still has my head and I even managed to buy it after a bit of work trying to figure out who the hell he is.
M2mQ7l1ME1k
He would be Kenshi Yonezu, or Hachi as he is known as a Vocaloid composer. I got into him a couple years ago when he released his album Diorama independently, the song has a lot of undisclosed feelings type of lyrics now that I have the capacity to read them thanks to dedicated translators. But the composition is what draws me to him more than anything, the sound conveys an emotive concept even without a clear understanding of the lyrics, and it hit me to the core the first time I listened and still now a couple years later.
He released another album this year under a major label, I'm a bit more lukewarm about it since it doesn't quite capture me as much as Diorama, but it certainly is more experimental than I figured it would be when he got signed up.

He is also, as I said, a vocaloid composer of some renown. I dunno exactly how other folks feel about the vocaloids but I'm a big fan of those who know how to use them in a meaningful fashion.
_JGaQ3g8WU4
Hachi ain't bad. So I also keep up with his vocaloid stuff as well. That I've felt pretty solid on even with his new stuff coming out.
YqeWsLCwFkM
You can totally hear his current musical style in what he's done now. Though I might personally feel it fits better with a singer like Gumi than his own voice. Back and forth about it though.

Like a chump I only discovered Mr Tom Waits last year, but since then he's taken up maybe half my music listening time and a small supporting role in my novel, even though my friends have lazy ears and don't believe me when I tell them if you actually listen carefully there's a lot more going on with this guy's many inimitable voices than various degrees of drunken growling.
A lot of sadness and horror and wonder and love and pain and courage and dignity. A Little Rain, Hang Down Your Head, Downtown Train, Jersey Girl, Waltzing Matilda, On the Nickel, so many great things I'm not going to bother linking stuff.
Tom Waits, great American bullsh*t artist. (http://dangerousminds.net/comments/tom_waits_great_american_bullshit_artist)

One of the few cases where a movie tries to make a song that's catchy and ACTUALLY MAKES A GOOD CATCHY SONG. They successfully made a one-hit wonder.

This game was badly executed, as it had solid RTS gameplay, marred by pushing the p2win and MMO angles far too hard. However, I love its soundtrack like you wouldn't believe. Glad I got it on my hard drive before they shut the whole mess down.

Arcana has some pretty nice songs, even if their lyrics, when present, are mostly incomprehensible. Then again, that's hardly a minus for me since it just sounds like another instrument. I find it pretty easy to get lost in this one in particular.

That was kind of fantastic, but I don't think it can beat what was, for me, one of the original Snoop/game mashups I saw -- Snoop in Kirby's Dreamland (snoopkirby2.ytmnd.com).

I do like Bat for Lashes, yeah. I wonder just how you were able to grasp my extremely eccentric, unpredictable taste in music, given the widely disparate genres and styles I'm fond of.
(I do tend to enjoy music with a heavier emphasis on vocals, which is something singer-songwriters -- the old-school Rat Pack with Frank and Dean, classic '70s and '80s crooners like Billy Joel and James Taylor, and modern vocalists like Norah Jones and Michael Buble, all among my favorites -- might actually have in common with Bat for Lashes. But all of that doesn't explain my affection for epic trailer music like Two Steps from Hell and Ivan Torrent.)

Speaking of Bastion, Transistor has some great songs as well. Of which none I shall post save for the one I think I can get away with/without causing potential thematic loss. Still this one is plenty great.

I'll attest to Overcast's recommendation of Transistor's soundtrack. "The Spine" is probably the best vocal-wise, but even the instrumental tracks are really solid.

Funny story: the first time I heard this song was on a friend's phone, the mp3 was corrupted and the last 2 seconds or so was replaced with sudden silence that cut in the middle of the last sentence.
I thought it was the most perfect ending and was a bit disappointed when i heard it again in full...Still awesome song.

Apparently SIA writes tonnes of music for other artists, including Rihanna (this explains why I like Diamonds so much.) Brooke Candy collaborated with her for this track:

Dang, I never knew Sia wrote music for other people, I just knew she was featured on lots of other people's songs.
With She-Wolf I was always bothered by Sia not getting top credit despite her doing ALL the singing. Everytime I bring that up people are always all "blarg, she's listed as "featured" and David Guetta produced the track so STFU" Of course they would be ignoring the fact that on the radio, the song's almost always credited as JUST David Guetta. How come I'm the only one bothered by that? Oh thats right, I'm the last person on earth who uses radio for music, haha, my bad.

Just gonna drop the OST for Hate Plus here (http://isaacschankler.bandcamp.com/album/hate-plus-ost), because it's fantastic (as is the game, and if you haven't played it you should. I think it's only 12 bucks on Steam and it's very, very worth it IMO.)
