View Full Version : "So I'm About To Watch Firefly For The First Time" or "Seil Has Never Seen Firefly"
So here's the deal; I've never seen Firefly.
I was late to Game Of Thrones... and Doctor Who, and Sherlock. So am I setting myself up for the whole "Oh cool, Direwolves! I hope nothing bad happens to them!" "Oh, Neddard Stark is totally rad! I hope nothing bad happens to him!" "Oh, Sherlock is super duper! I hope he doesn't get a nasty fall!"

It's Joss Whedon, Seil. Of course it won't end well.

Dinosaurs in space? Is this going to be more Doctor Who?

What's the Alliance?
Imagine that Earth's going to hell in a few hundred years. A limited number of the Rich and Famous Assholes who polluted our planet and trashed it in the first place have the luxury of evacuating the planet. Their culture is predominantly a mix of American and Chinese, with smatterings of European and Indian influences as well, because a majority of the people with the resources to evacuate are from those cultures. The government style is exactly as oppressive as you'd imagine the elites in those countries would be generations from now.
...That's pretty much the Alliance in a (incredibly oversimplified) nutshell. Fast forward many more generations and eventually you'll see a new underclass of the disenfranchised in the new system try and fight back.

Isn't this basically the opening narration of every episode?
So who are all these people? A space prostitute, a super chipper lady, War veterans, stereotypically angry burly guy, dinosaur man, priest, cockney clown, and well dressed business guy?

itt: Seil fails to use a chatroom for his stream of consciousness as he watches television.

Honestly? I'd say it's passable. But I don't understand the huge fuss, like everyone everywhere declaring it to be everything. Is it because it got cancelled?

Go watch the rest of the series. And the movie. Then you can say it's passable.
And you'd be right, I mean it's not be-all-end-all, but it has fun moments. And it's oh-so quotable. But once you've watched it you have watched it, and that is all the masses demand.

Its a SciFi that doesn't have laser guns so that makes it "intelligent".
And yeah, it got cancelled, and the Network screwed it to kingdom come by showing the episodes out of order.
And you should also look up the comics on it. There's surprisingly a lot of them.

Do you know what your sin is, Seil?
Impatience.
The pilot was decent, but it's hardly the high point of the series.
And you know, it's more or less a space western?

Right, so laser guns are obviously a rarity, like in Cowboy Bebop. :smug:

For me, it took a long time to get into it, I finally really started enjoying it around episode 6, was super into it on the last few episodes, then was angry about it when I found out there were no more and nothing was resolved.
And Serenity sucked, for reasons I won't go into, because I think I might be the only one who thinks that. I don't really even want them to bring the show back, unless they retcon it, honestly. I don't really see much of a point in it.
Oh, wait, Mal escorted Kaylee in frilly pink dress and steampunk tux and beat up douchey noble guy to protect Inara's honor in a space-sword fight? ...I can see why this show gained some popularity.

Yeah, Serenity doesn't really fit in very well.
They had to wind the development of the crew back a bit to set up the tension about keeping River and Simon on the ship, and then it makes some huge changes over the course of the film to the crew roster.
It works fine as a stand-alone but I wouldn't want to see it taken as a basis for a continuation.

I feel that it worked out for the better that I saw Serenity before watching the series.
I didn't feel lost or confused -- the movie re-explains things existing fans already knew well enough -- and was motivated equally by the banter and interactions and by the setting to pursue Firefly.

This was basically how it was for me as well. And yeah, I don't see a way of really continuing the series past the movie, though the comics are giving it a good try.

That's actually how I was introduced to the show too. I watched Serenity, but I also was only half paying attention, and wasn't super into it. Later, I was told Firefly was much better, so I watched that, and then disliked Serenity more, when I rewatched it.

Indeed they did, and theyre written by Whedon to boot. But the comic series is called "Serenity". I'm guessing Fox or whichever channel it was owns the name rights to Firefly?

Firefly is pretty decent but it's very overrated due to its small but rabid fanbase.
I do find it desk-slammy that the final episode of the show was my favourite episode. A lot of cancelled TV shows end on a low/average note because of how suddenly it has to end, but Firefly's last episode leaves you feeling with a..."But, it was just getting good!"
