View Full Version : So...are we going to get an invasion?

For those of you wondering what I am talking about, on October 8th...David Letterman had a Musical Guest on his show. Not one from an English-speaking country...

Vocaloid Hatsune Miku performed live.

I think for this technology to have come this far to allow live performances on TV shows is rather amazing. I don't really think we are seeing an invasion of the Vocaloids like we did the British Invasion with the 50's and 60's...but hey maybe it will happen?

Anyways, this was just awesome and hopefully worth sharing here at NPF in it's own thread.

I particularly liked the mediocre applause and Letterman's look of "Please God let this be over."

Well it kinda is as most adults look at these like "What the hell?" without looking at the technological aspect of what they are seeing and realizing how far technology like this has come forward.

I know some big fans of Vocaloid in the anime community and after hearing this...I can see the appeal.

His attitude seemed more due to her poor performance then anything. Who ever tuned her before the show didn't do a good job from what I've heard.

Well, TV live concerts/music parts are trick to pull off. It still sounded good to me but *shrugs* Never did listen to Vocaloid till now.

Nah, man, even for a simulated singer that was pretty bad.

But I'm no Vocaloid expert. I don't know how she's supposed to sound these days.

Man, I don't want to watch this. I'll edit this in three or four minutes.

Ok, that wasn't bad. It's just like her concerts that I enjoy too much: Miku's song and dance are pre-recorded, and a band plays the music. It's a good set-up to make an event of voice synthesizer music. "Share the World" isn't a very good song, though. The key would fit the Luka voice better (and Luka does better English), but that's just a critique of the song, not the performance.

I'd say at least it's not the car commercials, but those were kinda funny in a way, so I'm giving this a shrug out of shrug.

Yeah... that was kind of painful to watch.

Went and dug around and found a recording of her live in concert. Yeah, the Letterman performance was not anywhere as good as this. She was touring with Lady Gaga this year stateside.

Hatsune Miku LIVE PARTY 2013 in Kansai (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL5YKZ9ecpg#t=897) I waited till she started to sing and I had to double check if it was the hologram or someone in a costume. Nope, it's the hologram.

Painful? Ok, here's a nice Miku song about taking a nap when everything's just so damn nice. The Flash Miku model used to make this video is Halfne Miku by John Su on Deviantart. (http://johnsu.deviantart.com/art/Halfne-Miku-Studio-396850314)

But yeah Miku is no more or less of a thing than she has been for the past seven years.

Also I gotta dump on Robin because that's what we do here and point out that the Miku image in her concerts (both Letterman and elsewhere) are a video projector aimed at a big pane of glass. Concert Miku works on the same principle as The Haunted Mansion ghosts at Disneyland.

That does not discount the performance of the live band, which, in various concerts, ranges from great to "better than the original composition."

I know everything you said. Just kind a liked what I see.

I feel like the vocaloids are suited better to Japanese than English, since the former is broken into syllables much more in song and, thus, not as prone to extended notes that emphasize the simulated aspects of the voice.

In any case, the American pop charts have enough terrible artists on them that I don't think Miku and friends will be climbing up them any time soon.

Maybe they are but that doesn't mean English-speakers can not enjoy them. Love Nana Mizuki's work here myself.

Also, to that last part Synk...probably right. The Vocaloids are better behaved and might start sounding better than the American Pop Artists.

From what I was told by people more knowledgable than me on this stuff. They weren't even using the current model but an older one
I particularly liked the mediocre applause and Letterman's look of "Please God let this be over."

To be fair I remember They Might Be Giants getting a similar response so I don't have much faith in audience responses.

Well...maybe the audience was really expecting Constantinople and not Istanbul?
