View Full Version : "What's The Best Holiday Movie?" or "Because 'Life Is Beautiful' Is To Depressing"
Which my dad so recently stated when asking me if I owned any holiday flicks. In that vein, aside from anything spectacularly Catholic...

...I volunteered "The Mighty (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrHeiz-xPQA)." Which has nothing on The Ref.

Which starts out at dysfunctional marriage and gets more Christmas-y from there.
Happy holidays, ya filthy animals!

...Die Hard? Hell, I dunno. My family watched Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke for Christmas Eve, I'm not familiar with holiday narratives.
The animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a stone classic, tho.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Die Hard is not a holiday movie.

I'll second Muppet Christmas Carol.
I'm also partial to We're No Angels (the version from 1955. The 1980's version is COMPLETELY different; not even the same plot). Three convicts (and their pet, a poisonous snake named Adolf) try to escape Devil's Island on Christmas by robbing a general store and sneaking aboard a cruise ship. The problem? The store owners are too darn nice. Featuring Humphrey Bogart in a rare comedic role, and Peter Ustinov, whom you might recognize as the voice of Prince John from the Disney animated Robin Hood.

The only Christmas movie in which Christmas is saved because two people get "accidentally" murdered.

Die Hard is not a holiday movie.
It takes place on Christmas Eve.

It takes place on Christmas Eve.
It's a Christmas movie.
It has a Christmas SETTING. Does not make it a Christmas movie.
EDIT: And yes, I WILL fight you over this.
Die Hard is not a holiday movie.
I guess, if you're Hitler

Not even the cast thought it was a Christmas movie. (https://rare.us/story/is-die-hard-a-christmas-movie-films-actor-gives-his-take/)

Tokyo Godfathers. Well, minus the problematic representation of a transgender protagonist. :/

That was from an interview with the Daily Caller.
You never trust the Daily Caller.
Therefore, Die Hard's a Christmas movie.
Nicht einmal die Besetzung empfanden ihn als Weihnachtsfilm. (https://rare.us/story/is-die-hard-a-christmas-movie-films-actor-gives-his-take/)

If by 'the cast' you mean 'this one guy who played a role that a monkey in a suit could have fulfilled to satisfaction' then you're still wrong.

Does it teach anything about Christmas?
The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk

Well, christmas is all about family and togetherness yeah? The entire movie John Mclane is fighting to save his family and win back his wife. What's more christmassy than that?
Also makes you value your clothes much more.

I think most people consider Die Hard a christmas movie just because it makes it easy to answer questions like this. Then they can feel all smug, see I thought up a non-traditional answer to your question. Which I confess I typically try to do but that movie has become the low hanging fruit of snarky responses.
You hear that? Thats the sound of me sucking all the fun out of the room. You're welcome

Our thing is the 24-hour "A Christmas Story" marathon. I love that movie. It's so aimless that it doesn't make a difference when you came in or what you missed, it's still enjoyable.

Is Donnie Darko a Halloween movie? Cause it's pretty great. Though my favorite is this:

A short film that celebrates the grace and import of ritual holiday celebration itself, and demonstrates the importance of upholding tradition, in a darkly humorous way.

Second, much like my father I had one movie I always watched during the christmas season, for him it was It's a Wonderful Life, and for me its A Christmas Story.

For what it's worth, our company Christmas party had a Family Feud-style game and Die Hard was included in the list of answers for naming Christmas movies, alongside Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and The Santa Clause (1-3).
This is definitive proof that it is a Christmas movie.

And then you get stuff that should never see the lights of day.
