Self-discipline does not seem to be this ninja's strong side. She should meditate on this a lesson. She should also have used ninja tricks to cheat.
MSperoni
01-15-2015, 08:38 PM
Well, if you remember from past episodes, illusory magic doesn't work on Kit.
Also I'm not sure Umami would want to piss Kit off by being caught cheating!
Gillsing
01-16-2015, 12:50 PM
I actually don't remember anything about illusory magic at all, and I was instead thinking of sleight of hand. I was also thinking that Kit might very well have been cheating herself. And while that wouldn't necessarily preclude her from being pissed off if someone else was cheating, I didn't think the game seemed to be that serious. Seemed more like a friendly way to pass the time, where any punishment for cheating would probably not have been worse than losing all those clothes. :)
MSperoni
01-16-2015, 01:47 PM
Kit saw through Umami's illusion when she made her clone of Jeanne, and waaaay back in the first Halloween Special when Rawhead tried tricking her and failed :)
So it hasn't come up much.

So, not to nitpick, but what is going on in the "Figure something out" panel? Did she suddenly grow a white mustache or something?
Actually looking at it now I think what is going on is the line of her upper lip is rising to meet the shadow under her nose. Just looks weird to me.

Because that is awesome.
MSperoni
01-28-2015, 02:54 PM
Contrary to what I've been lead to believe, women are in fact NOT harder to write than men and populating your story with 'em is both fun and easy!
Plus I like drawing ladies more. :D
So I'm glad you think it's awesome because I certainly like keeping it this way!

A good ninja knows her limitations. :smug:
Solid Sparkle... at first I thought she was using some kind of fairy detection ability, which gave off a 'solid sparkle' at the right location. In her final word balloon though, is "had better to it" supposed to be "had better do it"? Or is she just leaving out the "get" out of "had better get to it"?
I approve of the dark dress code, apart from forcing apprentices to freeze their nipples off in the cold night. Because that's so... sophomoric? (I had to google that word to make sure.)
Lord-of-Filing
01-29-2015, 11:13 AM
GAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Oh God, please more Solid Sparkle!
I mean, we're reaching Fonzi levels of silliness here, but we got a pixie commando out of it! You jump that shark my friend!
Edit: Some notes for the future... Solid Sparkle, for authenticity, should repeat most things she's told in the from of a question. Example:
"Kit is a pinky, Sparkle."
"A pinky?"
"Yes. That's slang for demon-blooded girls. You usually don't see them outside of whore houses. You'll need silver bullets to take her down."
"Silver bullets?"
MSperoni
01-29-2015, 11:25 AM
If Bludkolt didn't already jump the silly shark I don't know what will.
Solid Sparkle may not be in it all that much, but I'll keep the various Snakeisms in my head.
There's a lot of lampshade hanging in this update, and yeah, that was supposed to be "do" not "to".

I though, in context, "had better to it" worked just fine. Shorthand for "go to it" "get to it" something like that.
Also, I don't know if she should be taken more or less seriously with those mini dog tags and cigarette.
Shakalaka of DOOM
02-05-2015, 12:39 AM
No, probably not. Kit's tolerance is pretty high!
Not that I'd fare much better by comparison. She can drink spell components.
I'd challenge Liz. Or Poe. But probably Liz.
SaltyKracka
02-06-2015, 04:10 PM
Poe's really working the cleavage there, huh.
Is that a pinky thing, or just a Poe thing? I mean, on the one hand Kit tends to dress in a much more covering fashion, but on the other hand there's also the culture where all of the members of the species shown are female and they're primarily employed as sex workers.
It's an interesting thought, completely Watsonian, which is why I find I'm mocking myself a little for having it instead of paying attention to any of the actual plot going on.
Gotta agree with Erin tho. Telling yourself you know somebody is a great way to end up surprised and dead, and considering the metaphysics of the comic, that doesn't even necessarily have to happen in that order!
MSperoni
02-06-2015, 08:27 PM
That's mostly a Poe thing. Kit likes to dress sexy every so often too (see the Big Eagle Beer adverts or the cheerleader outfit she wore in the Halloween Special Part 2).
Kit hates it when Poe dresses that way though. Kit's a big of a "do as I say, not as I do" girl.
SaltyKracka
02-07-2015, 12:46 AM
And now here I am wondering if pissing Kit and her controlling ass off isn't half the reason she dresses that way...

SaltyKracka
02-12-2015, 12:34 AM

02-12-2015, 09:51 AM
If Poe is Jeanne's toy, then I suppose it's quite possible that Poe does know Jeanne in a way that others do not. But I guess that doesn't preclude Erin from being right. She still handled it rather poorly though, if warning Poe was actually her intent. Because it came off more as putting herself above Poe in the pecking order, and that's no way to get one's point across.

So I got a lot of excuses regarding The Dreadful's update status for this week:
Been super sick + snowed in somewhere where I didn't have internet outside of my phone + edits
That means the "President's Day Special" got delayed some (I think it'll be up tomorrow) and my original intent of having two updates this week (the special and 296) will be screwed up as well...
But, better late than never??

Dana Softmoore is a sorceress who has "set up shop" in Graingrove and is using her magic to animate a tree and pass it off as a holy being named "Dewbreen" in order to swindle the townspeople out of their money. Mistress Softmoore is also procuring local women so she can turn them into dryads, and she's very interested in obtaining Kit's soul for possibly the same reason.
Molly is her apprentice/stooge.
Loranna
03-09-2015, 07:50 PM
Oh. That explains why the dryads looked so . . . under-dressed, and acted a bit dim for forest (well, tree) spirits :).

So.
That comic just happened.
Let's go through it...Sabueso is clearly keeping some secrets from Hachiko; Hachiko clearly likes what she sees; Sabueso only gets interested in sex after Hachiko reveals herself to be a murderous psychopath; Hachiko either had that paper bag just lying around somewhere for some reason or is an amazing arts-and-craftsninja with a talent for creating on the fly; Sabueso has more issues than just the apparent; Sabueso is either having a very poorly-timed flashback, or Judge Kat is like...psychic or some shit, I dunno.
Also, for one panel Sabueso's face actually approaches humanity, so there's that.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT (I guess)
The host went out of business so Brian is currently transferring all the stuff to somewhere else. New host. Possibly a new site design.
It probably goes without saying, but The Dreadful is on hiatus till everything is situated. I'm not sure how long that will be.

If you're wondering where The Dreadful is, well, it's a combo of afew things.
The site is still a bit buggy and won't let Brian post pages.
That's being worked on.
Also I slipped and fell and broke my arm in three places.
This is also being worked on.

"ComicFury is a free, easy to use and advertisement-free tool that will help you set up a website for your webcomic, which you can elegantly manage without any technical knowledge. All you will have to worry about when using ComicFury is actually making the comics, the rest is provided by us. It also offers you free exposure on the site and excellent support on the forums. "
You register the domain name (like $10/year) and they'll host it. Seems easy and cheap enough :) I'm also confident that you have some savvy fans who can help!

I don't have the time to help... but would be willing to in principle. Certainly would contribute to a kickstarter, or throw some money each month through patreon. (Weird, at least 8 years ago I suggested to Brian that he put a button on the site where I could pay a dollar or two a month to help support it... and he explained that was considered poor taste... times they are a changin)

Here's a Dreadful Status Update (I'm pretty sure I've said a lot of this before, but here it is again along with some new information):
Brian is currently working on a site overhaul. Whether this means a whole new site with a redesign, or just a working version of the old site, I'm not sure (I think it's the former).
The people he's hired to do it won't start on it till early August, so The Dreadful will be on hiatus for just a bit longer.
But, once it does start up again, I'll have thirteen weeks of updates. And, since I have such a huge chunk of time, I plan on working on other things.
Not just commissions, I'm also strongly considering doing a Dreadful spin-off comic and submitting it to Comixology.
I may also do a smaller comic and post it on its own site, something simple and more day-to-day story/gag wise.
And I'm also considering starting a patreon or kickstarter to raise some money to keep The Dreadful going so I don't have to find an external source of income. At the very least, I'd like to be able to raise enough money where I only have to work part-time on non-Dreadful things.
Since I'm currently in the process of a move (possibly two moves depending on how things go) I've not really had time to sit down and really think about these things. In fact I've been fairly exhausted these past few weeks, between trying to get things moved AND keeping up with my Dreadful work AND making sure I keep up with my physical therapy for my arm.
But hopefully by this time next week I will have everything sorted...at least with the move. My arm will still need a month or so of mending.

That's why I wanted to do a novel. I think a novel format would allow me to go into more detail and expand on the Dreadfulverse in a way that isn't as time consuming as making a comic all by myself.
I've been working on this comic on and off for about four years and I've barely cracked the surface.
Plus the nice thing about text is that I don't have to worry about an art program or a tablet failing on me, nor do I have to worry about having a computer capable of running those things. I don't need a "setup" to write a story. As long as I have a laptop and my fingers work I'm okay.
The only thing is I'm not sure what to do with a novel once it's typed. I mean, apart from submitting it to a publisher.
I want something all of us can read as I go, like the comic. Maybe post a chapter a week or something somewhere.
I still want to do art too, like mini comics or pinup pics as supplement.
I really want the Dreadful to have its own site...blegh.

ComicFury is a free, easy to use and advertisement-free tool that will help you set up a website for your webcomic, which you can elegantly manage without any technical knowledge. All you will have to worry about when using ComicFury is actually making the comics, the rest is provided by us. It also offers you free exposure on the site and excellent support on the forums.
ComicFury gives your webcomic a completely customizable website, you can make your own layout, optionally configure a ton of settings and it even comes with an author blog, RSS feeds and comment system.
Below is a list of some of ComicFury's features:

Your website will be reachable at the following locations: http://yourchosenurl.thecomicseries.com, http://yourchosenurl.the-comic.org, http://yourchosenurl.thecomicstrip.org
- Hosting an unlimited number of Webcomics and comics with no bandwidth restrictions whatsoever
- A function that lets you add extra pages on your comic for things like an "About"-page or a "Cast"-page with a What-you-see-is-what-you-get-interface. Optionally, you can also edit them with HTML.
- Hosting additional files needed for the layout or extra pages
- Providing you with a completely ad-free site.
- Host your own domains (e.g. www.example.com) for free with ComicFury (You have to pay for the domain yourself) - no shoddy redirections. Contact us for more information
- A comic search system that lets you transcribe your comics and your users search in them

- If you, however, do activate your account you will be able to get excellent support for all problems you may encounter on the forums.

- A comments function which lets you choose whether you want to allow people to comment on your comics and whether to moderate (approving them manually) the comments or not

- Everything is completely configurable, you can change all the comic information including name and location (URL) at any point of time
- A powerful layout system that lets you configure exactly how you want your webcomic site to look via HTML. You can customize every last bit of HTML, unlike in some other hosts.
- A number of premade layouts for those who do not like to bother with HTML
- ComicFury allows you to hide the comic from ComicFury while you're still working on it or if you don't want to be associated with the actual host.
- The ability to invite an unlimited amount of co.-authors to manage the comic with you
- A permission system that lets you decide what exactly your co.-authors should and should not be allowed to do
- Linking back or even mentioning that you're hosted by us is optional.
- No pre-moderation. Comics you upload will appear right away, unless you choose to release them in the future. Your comics will only be removed if they contain illegal content.
- The ability to set a comic's release date in the past, if you wish to keep correct dates while transferring an archive
- A traffic-logging system which tells you how many people visited your site daily in form of nice graphs.
- An extensive setting-system letting you choose the comic time zone and how dates are displayed on the comic.
- Letting you choose precisely what to display on the comic front page.
- Giving you the option of showing your guests codes that allow them to copy your comic strips into forums and blogs, for extra exposure.

So if you register your domain name, it can be used as the url for your comics hosted on ComicFury. You can do the same with free forum hosting. Basically, it will cost you like $10-20 per year to get set up. I have plenty of contacts who could get you up and running for a nominal fee.
Get us a way to get you some cash and I'm sure it could be done with no out of pocket expense to you.

Rather lacking in any automated software, but I do have easy html templates that I put together!

Not The Dreadful but it's another comic. What I've considered to be my best comic. Something I've been putting off for a long time.
My dreams of a serious and steady art career seem to be coming to a close and if I'm gonna go out I'm going to go out hitting as hard as I can :D
It's either this thing or The Dreadful and I think I'm gonna choose "Mysterious Thing". I'd like to try to get it published or put on Comixology. If none of those work out, I'll put it up online somewhere.
(I'll still do art stuff and I still have plans to restart The Dreadful, but the commission biz isn't working out and I need to do SOMETHING. Maybe this is fate!)
