If you head into your control panel, select "Edit Options" in the left column, and scroll down to "Thread Display Options", there is one that reads as follows:

Default Thread Age Cut Off
You may specify a time period from which to display threads. Threads older than the age you specify will not be shown.

You can select something other than the default. Some prefer to have only recent threads visible, some prefer older to stay. I prefer to have all threads available to me, despite rarely going that far back. There should be no performance difference, since it's super fast to get the count information needed for the server to generate the page links (the listing of threads on each page is generated only when that page is requested).
