So we get the first trailer of Jem and the Holograms. I'm not sure this really hits all the right nostalgic notes as the cartoon did. Granted, this may be more tailored to the youth of today, but it just doesn't have the same feel to it. Its more like a basic "girl and friends post video on Youtube and become famous rockers and deal with the price of fame" sort of movie that anyone could make if they wanted to make a topical Youtube fame movie instead of whatever the hell Jem actually was.

Anyway, we'll see how this does. It's not going to be terrible, but I have my doubts that it will be outrageous. Truly, truly outrageous.

They didn't even get the hair right. It's supposed to be big foofy 80s hair. That's like 90% of the cartoon.

It looks extremely bland. I doubt it'll be any good.

This Jem needs more polish.

Also I'm pretty sure they cut-out all the cool stuff that made Jem...Jem. No Synergy, no holographic costume changes, no Misfits....they took what could have been a really cool concept and ran it through the blandification machine until it was a tasteless taupe.

The original Jem and the Holograms sold Glam Rock Not-Barbie Dolls to eighties children. The new Jem movie sells the vaguest hint of pseudo nostalgia to eighties childeren and then caters the rest of the plot and characters to the pre-teens who have never heard of the eighties but think this looks like a funny Hannah Montana/Glee/Pitch Perfect rip-off. Seriously, who is this film marketed to? It's too pre-teen for Jem fans and too bland and obscure to attract pre-teens. I guess it's plausible for eighties kids to have preteen childeren they'd take to go see it, but... dang.

This isn't nearly outrageous enough. I don't think I saw a single sparkle in that trailer.

Like, this may as well be a generic Hannah Montanna ripoff. If you really want to use Jem for this, you need to go full out 80's. Otherwise its totally pointless.
