"What Is A Must-Experience?" or "Pop Culture Negligence"

You've had it - when someone's never heard Bohemian Rhapsody, or never saw The Princess Bride, or hasn't had candy before. Just something you thought everyone's experienced, but nope. Some people have been living under a rock for the last few years.

I've had one of these experiences recently. When growing up, I heard a whole lot of names, but just subsisted on the music I've heard on the radio.... so N'Sync and other nineties pop. I've grown attached to my parents favorites such as Bach and The Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen and Gilbert and Sullivan and Miles Davis, but it's only been recently that I've checked back on all those names I've heard growing up - and so:

Have you heard of this Jimmi Hendrix cat? I think he's gonna be big.

What are some things you're shocked no one knows about?

Don't you mean what are some things you're shocked that you didn't know about, that everyone else knows about? That's what I'm going to address, anyways.

Okay, so, Outkast! I knew of them and I always enjoyed Hey Ya, but it's only recently that I actually sat down and listened to them, almost 20 years late. Why?? Hell if I know.

But, like, this video has me convinced that Andre 3000 was actually sent to Earth from outer space to save humanity from ourselves, and in order to do that he formed Outkast.

Next up, maybe one day I will finally sit down and listen to something by Nine Inch Nails besides Closer. Nine Inch Nails is totally my jam, and whenever I hear them I'm like "hey this is really good', but I never go out of my way to listen to anything besides Closer. Clearly something is wrong with me, because what the hell?

For awhile I kinda thought the same about Radiohead, in that whenever I hear them I'm like "maybe I should sit down and listen to Radiohead one day," but I think my tastes have changed so much that they're not really my thing anymore, if it's possible to judge that based on a few songs.

Aging has made garbage music acceptable and even enjoyable to me. It's supposed to be the other way around, but I think it's a lack of time to listen to intense music and the need to use music for utilitarian purposes (working out, background music for cleaning/cooking, etc.) that has suddenly made shitty music more appealing.

Radiohead isn't my jam, I get it. Thom Yorke seems cool, though.

I do like Nine Inch Nails, though. Maybe just because Johnny Cash covered them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc), though.

What are some things you're shocked no one knows about?

I've loved Hendrix since I picked up the guitar, nearly 24 years ago...

Such a powerful talent on the guitar, and a soulful singer as well...but the real strength he had that no one really is aware of is his writing ability. Where did he come up with all this stuff? Goodness gracious. He was just so inventive when it came to words. His greatest writing hero was Bob Dylan, the writer of All Along The Watchtower, and to this day, Dylan does his version of that song.

When Bob Dylan nods to you, you have achieved (well, post-humously achieved) greatness.

I love me some Hendrix. Every time I think I've got to that level of playing, I go back and listen and am repeatedly floored.
