I recently bought a turntable and started a record collection. Does anyone else collect vinyl? What are some of your thoughs on analog recording? Is it better than digital? Worse? Discuss!
I'll tell you one thing; of all the forms of music storage, vinyl records have the longest life-span (if you take care of them.) CDs and casset tapes are tied for the shortest life-span (!).

If your into that kind of stuff I'd suggest you look up Fingathing. Kickass duo, a turntablist and a stand-up bass bassist.

I don't mean for DJ purposes, if that's what you mean. I mean collecting vinyl just for the hell of it. Audiophile stuff. Anyone here have a vinyl collection?

My dad as just about every Beatles album in vinyl form. As well as some rare stuff be that singing Nun and about an actual ton of other records. He also as quite a bit of Reel to Reel and Casset tapes as well as an equally impressive cd collection. Me I have little to no interest in music for some reason.

Anybody who claims digital is better is a sacreligious America-hater and probably kicks puppies.

Digital isn't better yet. It's getting pretty close though. In a few years digital may very well be better. Of course a lot of how a medium sounds has to do with the speakers you use. Like that Bose thing makes digital sound very good.

We never go rid of my parents old record collection, if that counts.
Then again...we also have an 8-track player. It doesn't work...but we still have it. My mom is a bit of a pack-rat.

My mom has a heap of records gathering dust in her mum's house. We can't listen to them, because we don't have any needles to use with the grammaphone (record player).
I think digital is better.

"I have all these CDs, but I can't listen to them because my CD player broke and I'm too lazy to get a new one. I think records are better."
Bull-hockey.

DVD audio is pretty close. Aguably close enough to not notice the difference. I think it's more of an authenticity thing. Records contain the EXACT sound wave of the music scratched right into the vinyl. CDs and DVDs contain digital information of an approximation of the sound wave. Plus, CDs and DVDs cut off very high frequency and very low frequency to save memory. If you REALLY crank the bass with a cd, you'll notice it.
You need a high end system to get the most out of vinyl, but I guess you could say the same about didital music storage.
Well you also have to account for how many times a record has been played. After the sound is altered every so slightly each time you drag a needle over it, and it will eventually erase the record, but thats another cool thing about records. It's like a living creature. It lives it changes it dies. If I was a religious person I'd say it has a soul.
But yeah nothing, NOTHING, will ever sound better than a brand new record.
I've got a humble record collection. It's mostly 7 inches, and 45's that bands have released here and there. I have a few LP's including a really cool Dill records pressing of "Sing along with skankin pickle."

PDQ Bach! Freakin hilarious. Of course, you have to like odd-ball humor to get it. That and I say every Yes album you can get your hands on. We have a shmorgasborg of awesome classic rock.
