This long, and at times ridiculously thin island had many times proven itself a magnificent Vacation spot. It may be no more than an overgrown sandbar to the landlocked, but there's a mystique about the barrier Islands of North Carolina, something about their being caught between the commercialized beaches of the northern seaboards and the utterly tropical sands of The gulf of mexico. There's a homeyness to them, a sense of security and overall wellbeing associated with the fairly uncivilized place, with just enough tackyness and rugged appeal to make it liveable.
Ben thought, his attention slowly turning back to the concious world
And I should go into sales, maybe real estate...
His eyes opening at last and laying on the person next to him, happy to see through the gummy haze of dryness not a drunken hook up or passed out friend, but the slender back of someone very special to him, dirty blonde hair splayed about the pillow as she shivered slightly, tightening herself into a fetal position , and seeming to relax as Ben laid the sheet over her bare skin.
You don't even talk and yet somehow keep me on the right track...
He mused as he laid his head back down, closing his eyes once more
I'm no salesman, damn right...
as sleep fell back over him.

3,000 miles away, a geologist nearly wet himself as he stared, wide eyed at his instruments before running to the observation station supervisor.

-Alright, intro yourselves and once we have most of ya'll, things will get moving.

John walked into his room with a bored look on his face. He was ready to leave this island already, but he knew he was far from gettting off this burning piece of rock.

"Hey dad, can I have another 20 for the arcade?" he asked in a bored tone.

"No, you've already spent a hundred dollars so far," he replied in a kind of angered tone.

"Oh c'mon, I've spent more and you know it," John retorted, getting a little angrier himself.

"I know, but we've only been here two days, so keep your money needs down for a few days," he replied, a finalizing feeling to his voice.

"Oh fine, no more arcade for the week," John grumbled, sitting down in a chair and pulling his Game Boy out of his pocket and began playing a game.

My hair is so f***ed up

with such a momentous occasion impending, and so many more words at his disposal this was all that the mind of Erick Diaz could muster. He peered down at his shadow noting the discordant strands of black which jutted from the entirety of his drawn out simulacrum. he smoothed his unruly mop back out of habit, only to have it blown into dissarray by the breeze once more.

A million what ifs coursed through his mind, and yet no concrete thought emerged beside that one statement of self criticism. He sat on a short blue bench wearing a multicolored polo shirt and blue jeans. He looked out over the harbor, waiting for the 12 o' clock ferry to arrive. He could see the craft some distance away, growing inexorably larger as the time pased like syrup through a sieve.

I can't believe this is actually happening

the sentiment was genuine, not just idle chatter in her mind. A year ago she was struggling through college in Cebu, a university town in the Phillipines. She had always envisioned going from college straight to work for some local computer software development firm. Maybe doing some volunteer work, but travelling halfway across the world to meet a volatile young man, that she had definitely never seen coming.

The sun reached its apex in the afternoon sky, and a white sea bird flew alongside the slow moving craft. The waves were calm, an idealic tropical paradise for all intents and purposes.

"I hope I don't do anything stupid" they thought allowed simultaneously, much to the chagrin of the people standing around them.

*She paused in the center of it all, her mind stuck between complete awe and a moments victory of completely her tast. Her features softing with the mixture of complete glee, she gazed slowly over her now unpacked apartment. Small, yes, but liveable for one, which might be all she would ever stand as. Sighing and not wishing to think of such things on a moment such as this, she darted for her favorite part of this small haven. The door widding with now what seemed to be a melody of a noise as it opened fully.

Her eyes locking on the pure feathered white sheets of her bed, the sound of the ocean rising from the opened windows as each wave cracked upon the shore, washing back out to sea. The breeze drifting in and fluttering the soft fabrics of the room, the smell could of been just as wonderful. Sighing in utter contentment, she fell back into her bad, her figure sinking low beneath each rest of sheets, softly crinkling beneath her weight. Moments like these made her remember of why she gave everything up back home, this was the true Utopia. All of this scattered away as the phone rang, jolting her up right as her eyes went blank.

Forcing herself into a stand she darted to find its where abouts, each ring like a time bomb to miss the call. Sighing as she began to moan at her efforts, she gave up in all attempts while the answering mechine went off.*

-Hey...this is your boyfriend here. I guess it isn't like it matters anyhow. Not like you take the time to call. Just leaving like that in all, but I guess you don't care. I mean...if you did you'd still be here. But I see how it is, work is more important...-

*She bit her lower lip, her heart seeming to fall straigt into a bottomless pit at the sound of the voice, suddenly giving her the extra urge of energy of regaining the efforts to look for the phone.*

No no no no no!

*She almost screamed, and at the same time found rest on the phone, lifting it up just as he finished. Her triumph (sp?) left to waste.*

-..but anyhow..probably found yourself someone else. I guess I'll just give up already. Call back if you ever feel like it...bye-

Gah! You idiot!!!

*She yelled into the phone, her voice aching as the pleading and whining of his voice stopped. The line empty on the other side.*

...just great...

*She muttered, tossing the phone aside. Slumping a bit all in all.*

Just perfect...

"Bah."

If it was possible to sum disgust, contempt, loathing and dismissal, flavored with vague regret and longing, all into a single uttered word, then Jon had done it. Even the wind blowing into his face couldn't deter the verbal venom he had unleashed.

Then again, the weather seems pretty good... Not that it matters. Not without Nat.

The familiar wrenching of the heart came over him again as he thought of Natalie, the girl he had met on-line so long ago, and whom he thought he was going to meet in person, at long last... at least, until his parents had sprung the "surprise" that they were going to North Carolina instead of Ohio, where she lived. It was the third day, and he still wasn't speaking to them. Fine. That was their problem. This is the sound of me not giving a damn.

And as he turned back to the sea, he suddenly felt a pang of longing as he saw a smiling couple walk by. He suddenly felt the urge to clutch Natalie to him, to tell him how much he treasured her, to feel her arms close around him as she smiled back up at him.

Damn...

Mark took a breath as he looked up at the celing. Today was the last day that he would be with his best friend. It seemed like a long time ago when Brandan had moved, and he he was now, moving back to the safty an cold of MA. He sat up and finsihed packing his stuff as he also heard about an island that he had to go to. Everything was set up, all he had to do was drive over to it, and relax for the last few days. His friend was to go with him, but there was too much work for him, so Mark would be going alone, getting a small motel there.

It was moving time, and all of his stuff was in the rental. He gave the mother a hug, shook his father's hand, then gave his best friend a hus as well. Mark loved to give hugs, that was one of his problems, but it didn't matter. Nodding and waving, he drove off to the secluded island off the coast of NC.

Secluded... Mark thought. As in... no one around. Just me. It'll be good to have that for once.

---

He settled into the new motel where he would be staying for the next three days, by himself. Mom had contested, but he was able to talk his way into it, just as he did everything else. Stepping out to see the sun trying to make it's way out from behind the earth, he found a spot alone on the beach, crossed his legs over themselves, and closed his eyes, taking in everything and nothing.

*Yes, the first part of the relationship had been more then wonderful, but from there it went all down hill. It started to be all about him, and the fights she wished she soon forget. Lifting up the phone she dailed his number. The growing ring, only to wait for his voice which never came. Giving up she tossed the phone aside, landing perfectly in her now ruined bed sheets, sinking further in.

She had no doubt she would forget where it was again, but that thought almost brought too much comfort. She really didn't want to be reminded of it all yet. Work started in a week, which gave her plenty of time to lose herself, and after that would be the only time she'd admit to reality. Seeing it fit to relax she made her way to the closet, pulling out a bathing suit she would of never bought before. Living up in Ney York, having it more then cold most of the time, and then schooling, family issues taking up the rest, little time was found for pleasure.

Pealing her cloths free and slipping on the new garment she made her way to grasp a towel and sun tan lotion. Making her way outside to only be greeted by the beach, all her troubles were fading away, her head tilting back to see the other apartments just behind her. This place was fairly new, and she oftened wondered who would be her new neighbors. Darting for the water, her feet sinking into the warm cushin of sand she tossed her items aside to grace her feet with now the cool feeling of water. Her hair whisping around her face as she raised her hands toward the back of her neck, reviewing her to do list.*

Better do it today, for there might not be a tomorrow,...

*She never got that saying all too much. If there wasn't a tomorrow, there wouldn't be a point of doing it in the first place since your efforts would all just go to waste.*

I sure hope so.

*She whispered, finishing her sentance, unknowing that this might be true for one very day.*

John looked around the terminal appraisingly. "This is it?"
"Lighten up, John. This'll be fun!"
"It's never fun. The only thing that made this less unpleasent is that you didn't drive this time. I hope this won't be another Colorado case."
"The horse was only stubborn because it was gassy."
John gave his parents a look most parents give to their children then walked away, following the signs to the pickup area. as usual, his sister was already there, having sprinted to beat him in her mind's delusion that he was still immature enough to race his little sister.
"I win again! I always win!"
"Get a clue. You always win because you're the only one racing."
"I won the race against you!"
Unable to tolerate her naivety much further, John grabbed his bag from the luggage thing as well as his parent's. His sister grabbed hers and their older brother's, who was just coming in now.
"Hey, Maggie, who said you could carry my bag?"
"You weren't here yet Tom."
"Gimme my bag."
Tom grabbed away his bag, and John handed him the parent's bag. He knew Tom had some ploy ready to get whoever didn't cooperate in trouble, so he tried to avoid getting on his bad side when he was the agressor. Tom knew he plotted like this, so never let John take the agressive. This mild animosty was dismissed by Maggie's blind fury at both. In her eyes, Tom was out to ruin her by tricking mom and dad into giving everything to him and John. Naturally, this meant all three hated each other on at least one level. Vacations were prime time to vent this hostility. God, this is gonna be hell.
