At least, I'm thinking it is.

RPGs. Gotta love 'em, right? But, of course, there's just so damn many... Can't play them all. So, out of every RPG you've ever played, which one is tops on your list?

Me? Well, I'll get back to you on that one. I've got a lot of reminiscing to do...

Lian

Either FFVI or CT. I'm leaning towards FFVI.

The B.T.C.
11-19-2003, 01:01 AM
I would have to say my favorite is Kingdom Hearts. Though Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy 7, and for some reason Beyond the Beyond are all honorable mentions.

Lian
11-19-2003, 01:04 AM
Me and my friends call it Final Fantasy: Kingdom Hearts. :D That's a top contender, too. Is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (and beyond) in contention as well?

I'm sorry, but there's no competion, NONE, against the original FF. go BM! :bmage:

Ah, its good to think about the good ol SNES days and the great collection of RPG's in my room, its so hard to narrow it down, but the best would have to be Chrono trigger, follwed very closely by ff6, secret of mana, lufia 2, Earthbound, and illusion of gaia.

Fallout 2. Good old American RPG.

1) Chrono Trigger - hands down, favorite rpg of all time
2) Fallout 2
3) Earthbound
4) a tie between FFV and FFVI - 6 had the better story, 5 had the splendid job system

Urgh... Can't... Resist.. Posting more than one!
Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, The whole FF lot, The Baldur's Gate series, Fallout 1 & 2, I love them all! Couldn't make me choose between them if you held a pack of scorpions to my face. Spiders, however...

Fallout 1 and 2 are definitely my favs as far as PC RPGs go. They were so open ended you could hurt yourself in so many ways.

As far as console I couldn't put down Chrono Trigger until I had all the endings. I still play it once a year. The other's just sit on my shelf.

lots to choose from. but if i were to choose one, i personally think CT is the best game ever, with one of the most original and moving plots ever in a game.
honourable mention goes to:
FF3 for being pure fun (and a tough final dungeon. damn those final bosses)
FF6 for having the most beautifully thought out characters (altho i did not like world of ruin that much. parts of it were very nice, but overall nothing really happened)
FFT - i loved chapter one. i played it over and over. The rest of the game has a pretty good plot, but chapter one was justs simply amaing
SD3 - i dunno, it really kicks ass. i cant really explain

Can FF XI count?

If not...mark me up under Kingdom Hearts! :D

I bet I could list every RPG I've played since there aren't many...

FF1, FFT, FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, FFT: A, BoF3, LoZ (can't remember which ones, but most of them), All Castlevanias.

MMORPGs: Everquest, Planetside.

I am going with FF3 (FF6 Jap) Kefka, Locke, Shadow all very memerable characters.

Devil Wet His Pants
11-19-2003, 01:24 PM
I really can't post just one RPG, sorry.
Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order):
Secret of Mana
Seiken Densetsu 3
Chrono Trigger
Lufia 2 (Nice and enjoyable)
The 7th Saga (Just so you know what a hard RPG is like)
Breath of Fire 1 and 3 (Screw the rest)
Star Ocean 2 (God, I love this game)
FFT, FF1, FF3, FF6, FF7, and FF10 (Somebody enjoyed the 10th one?! Blasphemy!)
Xenogears (Why hasn't this been posted yet?!)
The entire Suikoden series.
RPG Maker (Um...does this count?)
And...a bunch of other great games I can't remember right now...
Like Wild Arms...and Valkyrie Profile...

Lian
11-19-2003, 02:05 PM
What about Secret of Evermore?

I liked it. :p

Earthbound...

Man, that game was fun.

But man, was it messed up.

11-19-2003, 02:15 PM
So many kickass RPGs, i can't post just one

Lunar: 2 Eternal Blue (2 is way better than 1)
Fallout Series (1 is fun cause it's really easy to twink, 2 is fun cause it has a great story and gameplay is fairly balanced...which can be a bad thing sometimes considering the many times you get into "everyone kill the savage" fights)
Crono Trigger
Final Fantasy Tactics
Planescape: Torment (like fallout but with more of a fantasy twist and way better story)

Edit - Damn, i forgot Xenogears

BG2 SOA had nothing to do with the story and feel of BG1 that was amazing and genre defining, what did irenicus have to do with anything? it was a huge mish mash of charecters trying to gain stronghold...

torment on the other hand was an amazing game... got to say i loved fallout 1 and 2 just as much

Lucas
11-19-2003, 02:28 PM
clearly the best RPGs ever had the word "dragon" in them

dragon warrior for example

or...

breath of "fire" (which.. uh.. is from a dragon)

and last but not least

Chrono "the dragon of time" Trigger

I also enjoyed SD3 for the big last boss dragon.

I'm going to have to say the fallout series, star ocean, suikoden.Thats as far as i can narrow it down.

11-19-2003, 03:04 PM
C'mon, can none you people who said Chrono Trigger say Chrono Cross? I think both games were almost equal, with Trigger winning by a head. Sure the battle system and element grid were new innovations, but those were some of my favorite things about the game. And how can you not recommend a game where your party can be, if you choose so, be made up of two humanoid plants and a squirrel-like creature?

Lian
11-19-2003, 03:44 PM
I dunno. I loved Chrono Cross. One of my friends, though, thinks that it can't compare to any of Square's other RPGs. Then again, I might call him a close-minded individual... ;)

1) Chrono Trigger - hands down, favorite rpg of all time
2) Fallout 2
3) Earthbound
4) a tie between FFV and FFVI - 6 had the better story, 5 had the splendid job system

I love this guy!

I so agree (but, I have not played Fallout 2, but I think I will now).

Earthbound is my favourite game. It was just too good, and the ending is so original! Never in a video game have I seen as much priginality as I did in earthbound!
Such a great game.

My favourotes listed in order are (I don't meen to copy Johnny):
1) Chrono Trigger
2) Chrono Cross
3) Phantasy Star4
4) FFVI
5) FFV
6) FFVII

And the top three are so damn close.

Phantasy Star 4 is such a good game. For how old it is, it is amazing. It has so many aspects that game after it have copied.

Hmmmm... Tactics, Breath of Fire 3, Morrowind, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Mana, and Menzoberranzan (can't beat the good ol' DOS AD&D games).

Thu
11-19-2003, 04:06 PM
Tactics, FFVI, FFVII, Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, FFIV, and The Secret of Mana. Multiplayer Rpgs rule...and there need to be more of them. MMORPGs just don't do it for me...

Kieran Dineer
11-19-2003, 04:08 PM
I think that D2 and NWN did a pretty good job in making MMORPGs a bit less Massive. Sure, there are lots of people playing online at once, but only a certain number of people can join a game at one time. It makes playing with only certain people you like easier to do, as well as avoiding those you don't like.

You guys love your RPGs.

My favorite had to be Final Fantasty 3, merely because of the job system, and especially because of the Onion Knights. They're funny. 'Specially since they're really the best class at the end.

Dante Reborn
11-19-2003, 06:53 PM
After looking more into the games you all seem to like (or rather, looked at them), I almost feel the need to list what I've played.

Final Fantasy (1-9, excluding 8)
Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Phantasy Star Online
Earthbound
Terranigma
Tales of Phantasia
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Seiken Denetsu 3
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
Super Mario RPG
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Legend of Dragoon

Hell, you know what? I'm stopping there. I've listed enough. But, I'm gonna tell you this: Out of those 20+ RPGs, I've finished maybe four or five of them.

Lian
11-19-2003, 07:09 PM
I kinda had that disease, but nowadays I'm working towards purging that list of unfinished RPGs.

Dante Reborn
11-19-2003, 07:12 PM
It's not so much that I didn't want to finish them, it's more that my parents would find some reason to keep me away from them, and when I could get back, it was too late. I'd lost interest.

But no more, I say! I'll put a stop to this myself! Now all I need is to find a way to "steal" stuff...

Lian

Parental distractions abound during RPG playing.

Dante Reborn
11-19-2003, 07:30 PM
Yeah... It was always "Go to school" with them and "eat some food before you starve!" They didn't seem to understand that I could just take a 5-second nap and be in tip-top shape afterwards...

It's as if they know nothing...

Heh heh heh heh. No, no.

Not box as in "cardboard box I live in", box as in "computer box", the casing that your computer is in. My PC is a piece of absolute crap and I would destroy it myself if I didn't need the Internet.

hmmm......speaking of Sega... a Sonic the Hedgehog (best game ever) RPG? :D

You doubt the power of febreeze?

Well, ok. I'll hand that one to you.

JuggyFWB
11-19-2003, 10:51 PM
I have used febreeze in the past for getting rid of certain...smells...before my parents got home. But I'm curious how spraying a deoderizer on my PC will gimme a CPU better than the Pentium II I'm running on. ;)

Fallout.

And that's all I'm gonna say. Don't make me choose between 1 and 2; I'm just gonna say Fallout and that's that. They're too good to choose one or the other.

Chrono Trigger-[COLOR=Black] I had to stop playing it as matter of health
FF3(6)- best ever
FFVII- Best ever... wait best PS FF ever yea thats it
FFX- I enjoys it
Ogre Battle- yep
Mario RPG- Enjoys it very much indeed yes... :fighter:

Does Uncharted Waters count?

Mr. Viewtiful
11-20-2003, 11:04 PM
I've gotta say Final Fantasy Tactics for PSX. Here's why:
1) Storyline. BEST. STORY. EVER. (imho)
2) Jobs. Now, anyone can be a black mage! (now only if there was a "Hadoken" spell...)
3) Cid. Most (if not all) FF games have a Cid, and I think this one has the best one.
4) Combat. Now, you've gotta win by planning out your moves, and not mashing the O button to wipe out enemies.
5) Depth. And a whole lot of it.

I also like: FF7, FF9, Grandia 2, and FF3/6.

Oh, and Viewtiful Joe...uh...<_< >_> Look! A moogle! *runs*

Note: I mean no offense to anyone with my post, I'm just a strat game fan (Advance Wars rulez!)

Combat intensive - zelda series.

RPG is a broad term in itself. Technically speaking, every game is an RPG. You Play the Role of another character in a Game.

So, really, you can't cut RPGs down into two groups.

Star Ocean 2 not because its better than FF series but because it had like 200+ possibly endings, like 30 different characters you could get (some you could ony get by getting others, some could not be found while you had a different one), a bunch of sidequest, and hidden dungeons galore
