Well Thadius, we would need a soundtrack for the mission so I guess CT is a good idea. Why DragonsBane? He'd let the meteor collide with the Earth, he's evil! I guess I'm not brave enough for the mission *sniff*. Doesn't matter, these chaps'll do just fine. Lets hope they pull through!

The only way that the Pyros/Incendius running gag will work well is if you include PyrosNine into a comic. And, somehow, I just noticed, how many comics are Pyros and Raiden in? They don't seem to show up in this thread that often...

Thadius
03-01-2006, 10:32 PM
I intend to constantly say 'Pyros' when I mean 'Incendius'. Nobody will get it right, and Incendius will correct everyone constantly.
And as for the 'Why DB' question...
He is a mage of great power, is he not?
*Evil grin inserted here*
And RMB, I can maybe get you a place at NASA in my comic. Might work out as I have nobody in mind for that spot.

And just a quickie poll, who do you think is the mole in Rick's comic?Possibly Demon. Maybe Skyshot. Perhaps even the newcomer Orin (If I remeber his name right).

I doubt it's me, though... I am Loyal, after all.

Phil: XD Brilliant.

Thad: In space, nobody can hear you scream... Kinda makes your job boring, don't it. :p

In other news... Still grounded, but I have 7 comics drawn (And I've finally settled on a final, neater style for drawing, which looks nice), in addition to a shiney drawing I did whilst bored that turned out reeeally well. I won't be able to color it for some time (Then again, I don't think I COULD color parts of it right), but after school, I'll probably be able to sneak on the computer long enough to scan it quick-like and post it here.

"It" being the shiney drawing. The comics aren't going up till I can color them, as some are still somewhat messy and I doubt my handwriting will tranlate well onto a scanner as is.

Melfice

Well, me being the questgiver and vice-leader of the group, I can't be the mole either. That, or I'm secretly working with Dragonsbane... I don't know.

I'm saying it's stuntman, just because he's Rick's brother, and brothers tend to be very annoying.

EDIT: Nice one, Loyal. Cool rendition of Shiney, and so very true.

Heheheee! That's great, Loyal! Shiney looks awesome. And I love that the little pile of ashes has eyeballs. ^-^

In other news, my Nuklear Dragon Quest comic is just about finished. (Actually, it's been "just about finished" and sitting on my desk for the past three days...) I just have to get it scanned and online. Hopefully it'll be up by Saturday.

Loyal, you give me too much credit. As to your drawing, you really managed to catch Shiney's voice. Plus, if he had Megaman armor and a blaster, I bet he'd do that.

As to coloring it... Well, you could put the lineart on a higher layer, then color it in coloring-book style. That might work, but it's spiffy as is.

Mauve, I'm looking foward to Krylo's adventures as a woman. Would you like hourly pestering to finish it? I could arrange that...

Mauve, I'm looking foward to Krylo's adventures as a woman. Would you like hourly pestering to finish it? I could arrange that... You know, that drawing got me wondering: Is Krylo technically cross-dressing in that picture? I mean, he's a skull. He can't wear clothes.

As to hourly pestering: As much as I'd love to hear from you, Phil, I don't think it'd help. I have to get myself online at my home pc at a time when the rest of the world isn't sleeping. Which means weekends.

That might work, but it's spiffy as is.Well, the thing I'm worried most about is the shading (It wouldn't have that same charm if I just shaded like usual, with a low-opacity black drawn over the colors) and the pile of ashes (Not sure HOW I'd get that done right). But I think I might manage at some point.

Nice comics Thad! Although, that DB comment... I really don't know if that counts as an answer. If you scroll through the forums, we have multiple Mages of great power. I can think of 5 off the top of my head. BMG, RMB, MM, _Mike and Phil_. Oh and I guess Twiddy is alright... I guess...yeah. But you forgot to mention DB's Evil! Anyway, looking forward to the next one.

Rick: Waiting for the next Jaq anticipantly! But I like the Phil_ Comics!

Loyal: Nice.

MM: Also looking forward to your comics!

Fenris: I forgot to mention how great your comics were in me last post. Probably because I was looking for my bag-on-a-stick-o-matic.

Don't lump me in with those guys! "Mage of great power?" Feh! I'm lucky if my summons don't reverse gravity on me, sending me and my opponent into the stratosphere! And "●Dark" and "●Ice1" aren't exactly powerhouses of spells.

Fenris

Rick: You can do some very nice drawings even nicer justice when they're CG'd like that. Keep up the good work.

Thad: Minor complaint: Red-text-yellowish-border is MY text color. T_T

Other than that, I like the use of the punnery.

Rick: Waiting for the next Jaq anticipantly! But I like the Phil_ Comics! As I was telling Mauve the other day, I'm kinda burnt out on JAQ at the moment; I got all obsessed over it and did those last 15 or so all in a row, and one a day. So as soon as inspiration strikes I'll finish up the last 16 of Act II. But it might be a few weeks or so. Just so everyone knows.I like that comic, it's rather amusing.Yay! That makes it worth it. I was afraid it would be too clever for its own good. :p You can do some very nice drawings even nicer justice when they're CG'd like that. Keep up the good work.Thank'ee. And I'm looking forward to seeing yours! I agree; that shiney one woulda been hard to do. You'll notice I don't even bother with shading, as I'm so bad at it.

Now, for Thadius:
Dude, you were doing much better with the Assassin School ones, but these new comics could use some extra effort. For one thing, you've got far too much wasted space. I wanted to help, so just using paint, I mocked up a way that your comic could look much better, without you needing to change styles. Observe:
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/1233/anewwayforthad8mh.gif
See how much less space that takes up? Now, I wouldn't suggest doing it the way I did, (dragging the text on top of it from the side) cause it still looks pretty crappy what with the white. But if you were to letter it directly it'd look so much better, and you wouldn't have the annoying empty white spaces. And if it's the bubble-lettering that's taking you so long, and if you wouldn't mind someone else working on the comic, just send the text-less comic and the script to someone with photoshop or GIMP or something and it could be done in less than a minute. (I'm offering, if you didn't catch that.) Cause the potential's there, and I can see it, but the execution is coming off half-assed.

Thadius

I approve of your comics, mortals...and furthermore, I officially reccomend carrying around a multitool and duct tape at all times. Even when you have magic, you would be amazed at how many problems those things solve.

Actually, the Earth's well-being is something I do concern myself with. After all, I would far prefer to rule a lush, green planet than a cloud of space debris.

But are they Archmagi? Do they know the very flows and currents, the moods of magic on such an imtimate level? Have they known the sweet caress of raw power, and not just accessed it, but improved it with skill? Can they, through act of will, alter the course and flow of their spells in mid-cast?

Besides, I was here first. On the other hand, BMG and Mauve have the Anime Girl power, which allows them to beat the snot out of any male under certain preset conditions.

No, it's floating because it's waiting for Fenris to hold it HIGH above his head and make some "Item obtained!" noise! You can see it clearly in its smooth metallic surface. Simply screaming "I want to be a quest item!!!" ^^;

Have they known the sweet caress of raw power, and not just accessed it, but improved it with skill?I'm pretty sure Mauve has (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showpost.php?p=354341&postcount=874) at some point. Have YOU done 99,999,999 damage with one spell before? :p

Hey, that's a good compliment! Don't you know how much money the Dark Gods rip off you these days? It may partly be a combination of my constantly ripping them off, and being outnumbered by all the 'Good' Gods randomly playing a part in Deity politics now. But those facts are ussually negligable. Of course, it's not like that random increase in Gods has affected in any way the power structure of the NPF *coughMesdencough* or my strong urge to become a God.

You missed my point, or chose not to make notice of it. I am diagnosed with schizophrenia, but that's because primitive humans always say that hearing voices in your head can only be due to a mental condition. Stupid mortals...
For a beginner, that's acceptable.
It is quite easy to have more, I admit. However, my extra souls were placed into my body by a being more powerful than you or I, as a punishment. Having such a violation of my person kills any liking I would have to adding new souls to my body. However, beyond their faults, their skills and knowledge are more than worth the expense.
The Dark Gods do not want my soul, they know I'll just kill them and take it back. Besides, it comes from a prior Multiverse, and as such works differently than yours. They couldn't do much with it beyond Ending All Things.
If your body ceases functioning shortly after your soul has been taken, you can't do crap about it. Also, my soul(s) is different from most, due to the previously mentioned violation. As another note, I know of certain crazy Gods that would like to end all things. Your soul would actually fetch a decent price with them.

However, I bow down to both your seniority and superiority, for now, fellow Archmage.

This thread has a package that has most of the spritesheets and backgrounds already there. Use it and you will rarely have to go back to the old spritesheet thread. And you can make comics offline.

Also, Darkcorn, you have permission to use my spritesheet if by any chance you need it.

In the meantime though, I'm having fun with these new comics.

This thread has a package that has most of the spritesheets and backgrounds already there. Use it and you will rarely have to go back to the old spritesheet thread. And you can make comics offline.

Also, Darkcorn, you have permission to use my spritesheet if by any chance you need it.

One more thing! I am going to make a new comic series. You will never beleive who will be in it!Actually, me-sprites are in the thread and not in that, as far as I know. And I think I have that version. Ever since phil_ made me normal sprites, I had filler sprites!

Fenris: I am very confused, but you will probably explain it upon your return to NPF.

Oh, okay. Well, I have a bit of advice (or maybe just a plea) for you: resize sprites to at least 200% for your comics. Having to squint and/or practically press my nose to the screen to figure out what's going on makes reading your stuff a less-than-enjoyable experience. And nobody wants that.

Rick had the 1000th post. A post was deleted (presumably by Dark Corn) and Dark Corn made his 1000th comic. Apparently, someone switched their spots, as Rick's is the actual 1000th comic.

I think that's a neat little thing to do. So I'm going to see if I can get other NPFers similar spots. Think of it like casting your sprite as an extra in a movie. Though who's that guy on the right of the spell radius? I see CT down at the bottom-right in 8-bitness and Raiden in the sky, so it can't be either of them... Can it?

GC: Wonderful! Though I can't be sure, is that me getting the everloving cr@p blown out of me in the last panel by Loyal? If not, I'll just pretend it's me.As the maker of your sprite, I can safely identify that with a "yes". You seem have an affinity for getting owned by powerful spells, don't you.

phil_: Yeah, that wouldn't be a good idea.

Thadius: I kinda got mixed up with which text came from which person. Perhaps you could, at the very least, draw a line between the speaker and what they said?

About my comic: The textless panels are open for your interpretation. I did that because it would/might be fun to make up your own captions.
Also, I'll give away two things about the "ANARCHY!" panel: mammothtank is, as I last recall from an AIM chat comic, a magnet for Weapons that Really Hurt (TM); and Loyal2NES has been greeting the new guys with pain and humiliation.
Useless fact: The original had "Oy" instead of "Aiyah." But I like "Aiyah better, so... blah.
Speaking of humiliation, Mauve is the first (and probably the only) forumite I know of who has publically humiliated me in a comic. It was fun.

Thadius

Generally, I try and use colors from the sprite as the text. There are other cases, though...

Mauve: Pink/purple
Rathier: Blue/green
Thaum: Maroon/yellow
CT: Orange/black
BMG: Green/yellow
Incendius: Red/orange

Mmm... AJ as a mod? Interesting concept...

As for the rabites? Doesn't faze me a bit. I remember once, my best friend Rob and I decided to begin an ongoing project with the SoM game, in which we would see just how high of a level we could achieve before leaving Potos village without going completely insane...

So at last count, which was about 5 months ago, we are currently in the midst of level 15, and we have not encountered the first boss creature yet. Can you imagine this? RABITES! At 1 experience point each! 15 levels!

You'll have to do better than that, AJ... though yes, you are clinically sexy.

EDIT: To clarify, this project began roughly... 8 years ago? We haven't been as diligent as we could have, but even our patience has it's limits.

Sorry, DC, but no. Calling one's own jokes classic (Unless it's a long-time and/or running joke that hasn't appeared in awhile, of which this was neither) when they're not is bad. Trying to fake someone else saying it is even worse. It looks kinda pathetic that way, to be honest.

On the comic itself... It made no sense whatsoever. It had no visible plot, it completely lacked coherency, and the total disruption of continuity would baffle physicists and comic authors alike.

Ah well. At least the graphic quality looks cleaner this time 'round.

Savage Thinking
05-12-2006, 10:43 PM
Okay, what I think about comics is that the reader should be able to visually understand what is going on. Also, if there's as much action as DC explained on his past post, It really shouldn't be reduced to low amount of panels. I think that as much action that has taken place, it should be like 2-3 pages worth. That might seem a bit long considering most things on the comic thread are one page comics. So, what I'd do is to simplify the comic a bit.

As mentioned before, the reader should be able to tell what is visually going on. That is quite the challenge for sprite comics. Since, they're usually small, a sprite comic artist must enlarge them, thus making things a bit harder when the artist wants the characters to do a lot of dynamic things. I would recommend (sp?) that DC should make more of his dialogue and each panels to be more straight forward.

I didn't really know what was going on 'till it was explained. By not knowing what's going on, I don't mean like FLCL confusing, I mean like can't-make-out-what's-going-on-in-each-panel confusing. Expecially in the last two panels. I didn't know Phil was in the last panel 'till it was explained. As a matter of fact, I couldn't make out the lower right hand corner of the entire last panel.

Also, it was really hard to realize who is saying what. I'd recommend a line pointing to the one speaking or dialogue bubbles. When you want to make text with a matching color of the character speaking as an indication of the one who's speaking is a bit confusing at times. I sometimes get a bit confused when it's used in 8BT sometimes.

I know some of this might sound a bit condensending and pretty basic tips, but sometimes, just going threw the basics is best.

Phil: **** yes.

DarkCORN!: I don't want to offend anybody, but I can honestly say that I don't know what was going on in that comic. I mean, sure, I like a little randomness now and then, but there isn't much explination for this kind of randomness. I tried really hard to get myself to laugh at it, but I couldn't. It's just not funny for me. That comic based on an AIM chat was random, sure, but it's FUNNY because it's based on an AIM chat. People are usually chaotic in chat rooms. My last comic was funny even though I never gave an explination for the silliness depicted in it (the ANARCHY! one), so I must be doing SOMETHING right.
I know you're trying hard DC, but please try to act more mature and not take other people's criticisms the wrong way. I was like you once - ignorant, full of myself, and lacking as a sprite comic artist (or even an actual comic artist). (And I probably still am.*) So I kinda know how you feel.
Of course, if you'd like to prove me wrong, I am welcome to what you (or anyone else here) have to say. I might have made an error in this post somewhere.
*Wait, that didn't sound right...
AJ: As I read your comic I was imagining you saying the words, "Why is everyone stupid except me?" Funny.

Inbred Chocobo
05-13-2006, 10:08 AM
Actually DC, I had a much better time reading your comic from the bottom right to the top left. This is a joke, please don't take it seriously.

Its probably because your sprites lack depth that its so hard to read your comics DC. Its just easier on the eyes. Also the fact that your blood that you put in has no depth just draws the fact away. I also suggest that the next time you use the color of the words to depict who is speaking, you take the color off the sprite and use that, rather than just pick a color off the pallate.

Raiden
05-13-2006, 10:18 AM
MEH. No more. This is only going to descend into the dank ranks of flame wars, and no one wants the mods to enter with their Hammer of the Ban.

DarkCORN!. If a lot of people say reading your comic was confusing, then it was. I'll admit, I was confused, too. Calling them stupid, or insulting their intelligence won't make your comic instantly make sense. It'll turn off people from reading your comics, and as such making your comic posts nothing but space-takers in that thread, since no one will read them.

Some people gave very good and detailed advice (ZutsuJin for one). However, waving them off and saying "My opinion is great while none of you have any idea what you're talking about"....that is a dumb thing to do.

Stupidity abounds. Its not that hard to figure out. Read it carefully. You'll notice clear indications of what has and is about to happen. The text boxes have an arrow pointing to the owner. Just accept the fact that it is not supposed to make sense and enjoy the humor. And if you can't, screw you.
Edit: Just realised just how stupid some people are. If you didn't know, the comic reads from left to right, then resets to the left panel on the next row.

What humor? Frankly, insulting the intelligence of everyone who disliked your comic or had criticism of it is an abysmally foolish thing to do. If you are going to make ANYTHING, be it some form of artistic expression or humor, you should expect criticism. In your case, the criticism was especially well deserved.

Everyone else has given some pretty good advice, and you have failed miserably to heed it. By doing to, and furthermore insulting them for it, you just make yourself look worse. Also, quit the flaming, no one likes that.

Arlia Janet
05-13-2006, 11:54 AM
DK, your other name wouldn't happen to be Squidi would it? You have broken several of the rules of how not to make a sprite comic. Characters are disproportionately sized, stuff in the background is not blurred nor consistent, the humor is random and not funny (this is evident by so many people saying that they don't like it), characters spill over into other panels, and these are just a few things that jump out at me at first glance.

It would have been fine, but you made such a big deal of advice and criticism. You are acting like a wailing kid by the candy bar aisle at a grocery store. Then to top it all off, you insult everybody that didn't like your MSPaint comic.

If you didn't blow up like that, this wouldn't have been a big deal and we would have moved on. DK, you have broken several forum rules, and it would behoove everyone (including you) to take a step away from your comic and let it go. Take the advice or leave it, but don't insult the people that took the time out of their lives to give you some advice.

So, everyone, DROP IT now.

And I like the pic, Loyal.

Nice work, ZJ.... Flarecobra, in mud-wrestling. Now THAT could make some interesting comics.

I know... it's not supposed to look like mud-wrestling... but that's what it looks like to me.

DC, um...I was wondering what those odd lumps on your sprite's chest are supposed to be. I mean, that is a male sprite, yes? And breasts should be side-by-side instead of one atop the other, yes? Does that make your sprite alien? Does he have two tumors of the chest? I just thought you'd like to know that it looks nothing like a chest. Of either sex. Unless he's fat. In which case the upper curving object should be smaller than the lower.

Edit: I've looked again, for quite some time and tried to figure out what those lumps are. I've come to the conclusion that you think that's what a defined chest should look like. First problem: Definition on the chest is not only horizontal. There should also be shadows running vertically to show the separation between the left and right pecs, and the left and right sides of the abdominals, not to mention the obliques.

Of course, I could be wrong (It's been known to happen, surprisingly), and he's supposed to be annorexic, but then the ribs should be protruding.

Anyway, I have spent way too much time trying to figure out that sprite, and now I have less time to play Morrowind and cut the grass.

Though techically the old sprites were 16-bit too...

"I feel pretty!" Hehehehe

Not bad, Major. Not bad at all.

Try it, and you will be roasted.

And ZJ, NICE! I liked the little bird. ^_^

ZJ: ...

MB: You could make a series with that last panel. An unoriginal series, but still entertaining.

DC: Your earthquake sucks. :p I like MB's expression at the slap though.

That thought crossed my mind, but it would get real old, and really unfunny real fast.

And, I see that's in the SpriteSheet thread. It doesn't belong here.

RZ- Yay, JAQ!! How did you get a sprite of Mauve walking away? That's great; I haven't been able to conjure up one myself.

FW- I agree with MT; the "singing" line was just perfect. :D

MB- Well, at least I got my revenge.

DC- I love RZ and BMG (why am I using capital letters for everyone's names today?) fighting in the background. That was fun.

Rick, I doubt they'd mind the penis jokes. I mean, it could be a lot worse.

I wonder what they forgot...Here's a hint, it's the last thing you do in dungeons, and it's in the frame with them. ;) How did you get a sprite of Mauve walking away? That's great; I haven't been able to conjure up one myself.Well... It's actually Loyal in a wig! :p (Literally, a recolor of the back of Loyal's sprite with your hair and hat.) Though it occured to me after making it that it's not a walking sprite...Rick, I doubt they'd mind the penis jokes. I mean, it could be a lot worse.I don't want to know. :|

New JAQ logo in your avatar = Me likes.

Mauve fighting a Moogle + Presence of that damn Cucco and Tonberry = Genius.

Mauve Walking Away Sprite = --

Well... It's actually Loyal in a wig! (Literally, a recolor of the back of Loyal's sprite with your hair and hat.) Though it occured to me after making it that it's not a walking sprite......I feel violated. :p

Boss. They always forget the boss. Always. Remember Link in the Forest Temple?

"Oh, a lovely litle castley room, with a pretty little staircase leading up!"

"What's this? Paintings? How splendid! I do wonder where Saria is..."

"RAWR! MWEHEHE!"

"Oh blast! Phantom Ganondorf! What an utter surprise to see you...and you're pulling your face off. How pleasant. However did you manage to hide those boney horn-ear things and skeletal snout beneath Ganondorf's relatively normal visage?"

"RAWR! ME SHOOT LIGHNING AND GO THROUGH PAINTINGS!"

*Three arrows later*

"Oh dear, I fear I must have implanted one too many quills into your ghostly steed. Oh, what? You can fly? One must wonder why you go mounted when you can levitate thus...oh, you wish to play tennis with a giant ball of destructive energy? Jolly good!"

See? COMPLETELY surprised!

Major Blood: The comic characters and real life characters do not often purely reflect each other. Many things that are not in continuity may be done for the sake of a joke.

Just a joke man. Seriously, just a joke.
