I don't see a wrist strap there Mauve; looks like a serious safety hazard. Tsk. Hyrule's televisions are all in danger now... XP Seriously, that's a fantastic drawing and I lurves it. I like how you were able to adapt your style to the more anime-skewed style of Zelda, and yet still retained a definate... Mauve-ness to it. (And I ain't talking 'bout the color.)
There won't be a JAQ tomorrow night, I'm afraid; they've changed my work schedule on me. Comic will be up Monday night instead.

This isn't some kind of game! This is a desperate quest to save the future of Hyrule! Mauve can't be bothered with petty details like wrist straps. Evil could be lurking behind every corner, and evil isn't going to wait patiently for Mauve to adjust the safety strap before it attacks her!

hey wanna know something funny?
I was watching my hits go up and I was like "Fuckin' sweet I must be like supah popular!" and then I crashed the site breifly and was looking in this thread and noticed a bunch of comics were not showing up and i was like wtf.
And then I realized that some people are hotlinking directly from parkercomics onto here.
And I was like wtf pwn'd :( because that means I should be subtracting about 100K from my hits.
But I don't mind it at all and just thought I'd say that and is it too late for a guest spot in JAQ is what I guess I am really going for here.

Agreed. The cameos were great, and I was pleased to be part of that.

I gotta say, your sprite comics have that level of complete-ness that really is only seen in levels comparable to Brian himself.
I'm so used to Mega Man or Proto Man standing against a blue background, it catches me pleasantly off guard when you have an appropriately-blurred background in England or something, or the forest, or the theatre, or whatever.
And the 3D effects, for some reason, work wonderfully. This (http://parkercomics.com/NPF/RZJAQ.php?comicID=62) is my favorite third-dimensional sprite moment, in panel 9 and 10.
I honestly believe if you sat down and worked out a storyline, world, and sprites (something more accessable to non-NPFers), you could handle your own sprite comic nicely. It's visually appealing enough that I think you really should.
Hell if you weren't such a great script writer I'd almost suggest helping you out.
Melfice
07-30-2007, 03:02 PM
I fine Brian and Rick are on the same level already. He can only improve and stride past Brian now.
He has a great story, which is catching, has drama and humour which level itself out magnificently.
And like you said, the sprite-work, combined with his blurred backgrounds are superb as well.
If Rick were to do his own comic as a job, I'm sure it would be fantastic, and it would be an honour, and I would be very proud, to be a character in it. Already am, by the way.
So, I agree with you, Mirai, by disagreeing.

Why'd you lie, Nikose? Why'd you lie?
EDIT: Whoa, just saw those posts above. First off, Mirai and Melfice, thanks. But really, I mean, come on, comparing me to Brian? I'm flattered but, yeah, I don't know about that. Brian has been consistently improving and laugh-out-loud funny for six years. I certainly stole stuff from him at the beginning that gave my first comics a more professional look than his first... But I'm not sure what that says about me. Also, he has thousands of loyal fans, which a comic by and about those fans will never gain.I honestly believe if you sat down and worked out a storyline, world, and sprites (something more accessable to non-NPFers), you could handle your own sprite comic nicely. It's visually appealing enough that I think you really should. If Rick were to do his own comic as a job, I'm sure it would be fantasticAs to that stuff, I don't know if I could do that or not. JAQ has the nice benefit that I didn't have to create any of the characters' personalities, or for that matter, most of the sprites. Most of the heavy lifting has been done for me. Most of the humor comes from the fact that I can safely assume that everyone knows why something would be funny. (Like, say, the Loyal/Skyshot feud.) I don't have to worry about explaining anything to anyone. Also, I actually have a really hard time coming up with ideas. So while I'd love to do sprite comics for a living, or at least for money, I doubt I could.
Plus, you get the added benefit of a for-sure built-in audience when they're in the comic. :p

"Not particularly.
I don't care much for these politics and I certainly don't feel like watching over a bunch of people who have nothing I need. Now, if they were being particularly bothersome, or had some sort of vendetta against me... Then I might be persuaded to take the fight to them as a whole. But by the time I'd be done, there wouldn't exactly be much left to rule, now would there?
My measure of power is my own, not that of rulership. Anyone who would question that can take it up with me, personally.
...And dammit, Loyal, stop trying to get me into stuff like this. I've no time and no intent on wining and dining someone just because she looks powerful."
"You're really no fun at all, you know that?"
Flarecobra
08-02-2007, 07:57 PM

5) Profit!
I dunno. :D

My steps are actually:
1)Sprites (in MS paint)
2)Background (in Photoshop)
3)Place sprites onto background
4)FX (any that I haven't already done, at least)
5)Text
6)Text bubbles
7)FX Text (as needed)

Actually, Loyal is playing both parts: one in front of a bluescreen, which is then added in digitally later. This happens whenever Mauve turns her back on the camera.
One of the reasons these comics take so long to make.
And now you know!

That was more informative than expected, "Rick." ... I just wanted to do that one last time, since you've revealed your secret identity now. Now I understand why you have to do these things in one sitting and can't just leave one half-done for, say, six months. The binder was... a little strange. I mean, you've mentioned it before, but actually seeing it... that's some dedication to a comic about strangers from the internet. Also, that's a lot of back-and-forth between Paint & Photoshop. It was kind of a "Huh?" moment when you deleted the stand-in sprites. Couldn't you just leave'em and save yourself some time?
Why can't I have a deep, manly voice, huh?! You don't look that much tougher than me!
Oh, crap, and you want "who's," Mac, not "whose," in the first panel. Darn, tricky grammar is a bane to us all.

Rick, what program do you use to record what you're doing on the screen? I want to get in on this.
mauve
08-19-2007, 12:43 AM
That was really nifty, Rick! Very cool to see how much effort goes into an episode of JAQ. Although I agree with Phil about the stand-in sprite deletion. I'm sure you have a really good reason that I, with my distinct lack of Photoshop, know nothing of. But I was confused.
Also-- coolness. I have victims-- I mean volunteers. Just to warn you, the video quality will probably be rather shitty due to the fact that I'm transferring it from the laptop to the intenet-bearing computer, which only has Movie Maker V. 1.1 on it. Teh Suk. But is does something that slightly resembles film editing, which will work to a certain extent.
Anyway, I've been working for the past three or four days, and I've got a good minute and a half done. Just zooming through this.
I'll be in it if you still need extra people.
Do you have a sprite sheet?
RickZarber
08-19-2007, 01:19 AM
The binder was... a little strange. I mean, you've mentioned it before, but actually seeing it... that's some dedication to a comic about strangers from the internet. I've been working on this thing for two years now. That much material requires a lot of paper. I actually need to get a bigger binder; the 2" one is getting too full... As for that last bit... JAQ is like my pet project at the moment. I'm not really working on anything else anymore, since my movie fell through. So it's just that that's where all of my creative energy is currently focused. Also, I guess I like you guys or something. It was kind of a "Huh?" moment when you deleted the stand-in sprites. Couldn't you just leave 'em and save yourself some time? The reason I take those out is so that I can have each sprite on a separate layer, with the ability to adjust them as needed. This is vitally important in some comics, especially when it comes to group shots. You don't look that much tougher than me!I'm probably not; I'm a wimp. :sweatdrop Rick, what program do you use to record what you're doing on the screen? I want to get in on this. It's called CamStudio. I recorded using the Microsoft Video 1 .avi codec (the one they provide records better, but I couldn't get any of my editing programs to recognize it), at 200 frames per second. I had to create new files every few minutes to keep it from freezing when it encoded the videos, though. It was a pain. It took 23 sessions to capture that much video. I edited it together with Adobe Premiere (Trimming the parts where I kept having to open and close the capture program, increasing speed to 1000%, adding music, etc). That uncompressed .avi file ended up being like 35GB. I then used Quicktime to export it to a .mov file with the H.264 codec at 30fps, 192kbps, and 320x240 resolution. (Ended up like 23mb or so.) And now you know why it took an extra day to get that video online...
Anyway, I've been working for the past three or four days, and I've got a good minute and a half done. Just zooming through this. That doesn't sound too bad, actually; any kind of animation is tedious. I've rotoscoped some videos where it took me four days just to do thirty seconds...
EDIT: Mauve? I can't get the grin off my face. Fantastic. I can't wait. Seriously, that second picture had me laughing out loud for nearly a minute (bad, cause it's like 4am).

The reason I take those out is so that I can have each sprite on a separate layer, with the ability to adjust them as needed. This is vitally important in some comics, especially when it comes to group shots. Oooohh, I get it. That makes a lot of sense. I hadn't thought about that, but being able to manipulate individual sprites would be really important.

So, Rick... 9 minutes sped up = How many hours of realtime work? Heh heh.
It'd be cool if I could do something like [recording my comic as it gets done--whenever that is], but I don't even have a camera, much less a recorder. The computer work is little more than "color inside the lines" with a few gradients thrown here and there. <<

Also, on a belated subject of JAQ, I must say that i am rather miffed that a wall of fire was taken down. Firstly, it was a giant wall of awesome fire. That kept even fire people out. Especially Flare.
Furthermore, the only person around capable of creating such a wall of fire....is myself. Especially not DB. And it would have like, taken me a few days of concentrated effort to put 'er up.
And then the whole thing is destroyed by a greater bit of awesomeness by a Ninja in a few seconds.

Wwwwweeeeeellll, there's what I prefer to use (FINAL CUT PRO) and then there's what I have at home / can afford at home / have on my laptop (Movie maker. :gonk: ). And it's not even a good Movie Maker. It's like version 1.1. I'm having so much trouble coping with the fact that I can't have multiple audio tracks... or a decent rendering system... or an audio levels tool... or any effects at all aside from cross fades. DAMN IT I'M SUFFERING HERE!! MAKING MOVIES LIKE SOME SORT OF CAVEWOMAN!
So yeah, I've got all the good editing programs at school, but nothing at home. And as far as animation goes, Broadcast Media only covers video production. All I know about animation is what I taught myself with a video camera about seven years ago, and then applying those principles to the computer. But despite being self-taught, I'm actually pretty good at stop-action animation.

Once again, Mauve makes the rest of you fleshy humans FAIL in EXISTANCE from comparison.
It was cute, it was gerbilly, and it featured everything a movie should have and more. And not "more things that are unnecessary because she already has everything a movie should have" but things that were invented as what a movie should have when she created this movie.
I give it 9 thumbs up!

That part, the part with me in it, you know the part. Yeah, that's exactly how that went down.
Someday, the nightmares will stop...
Seriously, though, that was the general attitude of the forum for the past few years condensed into three minutes. Wonderful. And the sound wasn't bad. I had the script open in notepad (ok, "TextEdit," but it's the same thing), ready to read along, but I didn't need it. It could've been more obvious who proposed running from the spider, but since it didn't really matter who said it, it's a non-issue.
Really, that's pretty awesome, and not just because it's Paint and Movie Maker.
And so MB doesn't feel left out, isn't there blond hair in WoW? Because the Mauve model is your best, but it seems to have red hair.

My favorite part was the first half of the "Action" sequence; I was just so jazzed by that. Even in chibified Paint mode, that looked kick-ass. That is how awesome I wish JAQ could be if it weren't a sprite comic.
I echo the "moar pleez" sentiment (whilst acknowledging the many, many hours this must've taken. I mean, wow.)
EDIT:
Major Blood: I think the Loyal/Nexus ones are the best so far. Those look pretty slick.
Some of the others, especially Fenris, creep me out because of the proportions. Fenris has Popeye arms!
Also, let me state how happy it makes me that people are posting stuff in the comics thread again. Big Mac and I have been lonely.

Those are cool, Major Blood! I like Loyal, DB, and that certain purplish sorceress the best. Very nice job with those.
What program did you use if I can ask. The drawings were done in MS Paint, the voices were done in the Windows XP Voice Recorder, and the "animation" was done on Windows Movie Maker. All standard programs that come free with Windows XP. Mauve doesn't spend money.
Any plans for a second? It's always a possibility. If I can stand having my computer freeze itself every five minutes again.

I love it, CJ! XD The caption fits perfectly. Because we are indeed awesome. Modest and awesome. But mostly awesome.
(As for people being in the movie multiple times, I tried to only reuse people who were sitting doing nothing in a scene, like the folks in the Zombie part. I really should have tried to cram more people in than reuse people, but hindsight is always 20/20. Besides, having over thirty people in two and a half minutes isn't bad.) Not on Brian's level, because no, I don't have the time to make as many as him a week. I seriously wish.
I threw this one together in the matter of about an hour, and most of it was trying to make a good fade effect for the light. I actually have a few ideas for comics, but nothing in necessary continuity, and a lot of them would require me to make even more sprites than I currently have, which is a lot. For reference, in the real world, I have Jay, who you see in there, his brother, Todd, and his cousins, John and Marie. Popping in and out of the real world from the spirit world, I have Toshi, a Japanese thief who got shuffled over, Tendon, a native of the animal plane, and Troy, who has the ability to go pretty much wherever he wants and has no home plane. And those are just the main characters. After that, I have a couple human spirits, Jay's coworkers, various idiot customers I've had to deal with, our new cat, and a football player to bash around. Plus a few invisible characters/ones that never get shown. Really, most of the comic is about the kids, so the appearance of adults is going to be limited.
Plus, I need to either find or make backgrounds for all the places I'm going to use, and with the crappy camera angles Google tends to spit out, and the lack of places I liked the look of, it's looking like I have a lot of rooms to make or maybe photograph around my house and neighborhood. And it's probably easier to make them.

I find that making a Background in RPGMaker 2k3 works wonders. Just throwin that out.
bluestarultor
09-28-2007, 01:42 PM
What program does that? I mean, yeah, it has all the battle backgrounds and field tiles, but nothing that would indicate a deli or bedroom for a side-view world, unless there's a tile or background maker.
You did just give me an idea, though. I have a ton of sprites I could probably use from my game tiles. Trees and water and everything. And as a bonus, it wouldn't be too hard to put them on the same level and still look good! Thanks!
Sometimes the best advice comes from insight gained rather than directions given. :)
