True, but it's absolutely necessary and is excellent guidance that a number of people should really take to heart. Last night, in fact, I was sitting here with a reply box for a number of minutes wishing to say something similar regarding one or two million of the comics posted by someone in the thread, but was told by Fenris that, while constructive criticism was welcome, that it had to be kept nice.

Now, I've since long ago lost track of where the line between "nice" and "what I normally do" falls, so eventually I had to give up and just let it go, so it really made me happy to see Krylo handle it for me.

Thanks, buddy!
Surely, you don't mean JAQ or Blue Psychic, as Rick and I put a lot of effort into making all his and my, respectively backgrounds the best that could be managed. On top of that, his and my custom sprites are, in my opinion, awesome.

Plus, I'm learning as I go, so while my earlier ones were somewhat crappy, I'd like to think I've improved.

POS Industries

Rick's good, Fenris is good, you've improved a bit visually, though your writing could use some polish, I think. The hand drawn comics are usually pretty nice, which I think is mainly Phil and Mauve's domain. Shyria has a lot of potential in that area, too. TDK is... not the worst, either.

TDK

Eh, I prefer straight sprites to actually making comics.

Although I do take minor offense to Thadius' claim of the king of paint title. Really, now. He uses the spraypaint tool of all things.

bluestarultor

It would help if I could think of a story. :gonk:

Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of ideas for my non-NPF series, but that's pretty much down the tubes since this is NPF and this thread requires focus on NPF members. And also because I have yet to recover all my sprites, but the way things are going, all I'd really be using them for is finishing the Comic Con arc, which was supposed to be an excuse to be able to post things here with what I had and was never supposed to even last for how long it did before the crash. :sweatdrop

At any rate, now that I know some of the members a bit better, at least I don't have to shy away from including people like I did originally.

POS Industries
07-21-2008, 07:27 PM
Well, it doesn't necessarily have to go down the tubes. We have areas of the forums for the express purpose of posting non-community related comics. I know that this thread is typically considered the best way to kiss everyone's ass and make them notice you for putting them in drawings and comics, but if you actually have something that's really developed story- and character-wise, you'd probably have a greater and more positive impact on the community at large to work on that and post it, rather than using that time and energy to throw some NPF character sprites on a page and beg us to love you.

That goes for everyone, by the way.

POS: Because Loyal put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into making them for her? :sweatdrop

Also, as a general announcement, I've recently come across a LOT of Paint.Net plugins (still no air brush, but it's getting to the point where I might just write one myself) that are both awesome and useful. For reference, I've been experimenting around with them in these banners:

This one:
http://i36.tinypic.com/2jg46fd.png
contains a water reflection that's capable of using two formulae, for both still and moving water reflections and transparency detection to simulate shore. The background was done with some creative layer filtering over a "nebulous" rainbow texture set to zero for an hourglass shape.

This:
http://i37.tinypic.com/dxxt7a.png
was done using a global fire renderer for the background (which really works better for bigger areas) and a different fire renderer for the letters. The second one is also useful for lightning and "fire fill" like here because it puts weights on the placement and fierceness of the flame based on how close the area is to neutral gray. Values closer to black or white are used to determine wisps of the flame with a random generator. The only side effect is anything not rendered as fire turns black, so it's best used with layer filters.

The letters on this:
http://i38.tinypic.com/ezk510.png
were done with that same second fire generator and a "true blur" plugin I found, which only blurs the edges of shapes. The background is just an example of the cloud renderer that PDN comes with.

http://i37.tinypic.com/2gv2eq1.png
I'm not going to lie. I was stupid and did this manually with a normal gradient copy/pasted for both shines and the default emboss effect, plus some layer filtering. If I had been smart, I would have used my new multi-color gradient tool.

Other neato tools I've come across include a drop shadow tool (so y'all can't say PDN doesn't have one and Photoshop does anymore), stenography tools for revealing hidden images, paint splatter, a smudge tool, a plugin that turns your pic pastel, lens flare, sparkle/flare generator (from a brightness threshold), a "crystallize" (shatter effect) tool, light rays, polygon/star rendering tool, plugins to shape your image to a 3D shape and make seamless textures for 3D models, random effect tool, and plugins that now allow you to flip just the parts of the picture that you want to (which I missed from MS Paint).

So I guess you all can see how I've been spending my time. XD

Seriously, though, if anyone is interested, I can ZIP these back up and send them to you. There are a lot I didn't list here, so if there's anything in particular anyone needs, I can either give it out of my current stash or use my search-fu to see if anyone shared a plugin on the Paint.NET forums.

Also, thinking about it, maybe all that should just be a post in Creativity Convention, rather than cluttering things up here. I just figured I'd share the love with you guys, since you'd probably get the most use out of it, but a mod might think differently. :sweatdrop

If anyone hasn't noticed, I put a new comic up. I'll (hopefully) be starting a new arc featuring myself and CJ. Because we found out in Yaplet that there are a bunch of REALLY crazy coincidences between us, like being born only 12 hours apart on the same day, having similar physical traits, etc., so we figured I could do a comic arc about it. :D

I dunno, I was hoping for a "MAN! That looks like it'll be AWESOME! (^.^)b " or "Sweet lens flare! 8D " or "Who else is going to be in it!? @w@ " or something. Maybe it's my ego, but spending half a day to put it together seems like a lot of effort to call "nothing." I mean, I made the thing myself, so feedback on what an awesome job I did on it (purely my own opinion (also completely true!)) doesn't really seem that far-fetched.

Or at least, like, a "Try not to put your crappy non-16-bit, true-black outlines on a true black background." Constructive criticism is welcome, too.

Or at least, like, a "Try not to put your crappy non-16-bit, true-black outlines on a true black background." Constructive criticism is welcome, too.To be quite honest it's not that special. I mean it's good, everything's where it needs to be and I can sorta make out what's going on (Blues and CJ... but I don't know what they're doing. Fighting each other? Fighting crime?) but it's not great.

I mean like Phil said, what's there to comment on? You got a cover image up for an upcoming story arc of some sort... congrats? It's technically good, there's not much I'd say to improve on, but it's nothing special and I'll be damned if I sing the praises of heaven for a title page.

It's also worth noting that "half a day" is hardly worth bragging about if you're going for "mind-blowingly awesome".

Also that putting additional effort into something is not alone merit for extra praise unless that was specifically what you are aiming for. You will get far greater responses from using old and used graphics to tell an engaging and exciting story, than you will by using original pictures done from scratch to promote a piece of merely "good" quality.

I just thought I'd add that last part in because it sounds as though you believe your completely custom sprites as the be-all-end-all checkpoint for excellence, and I question your artistic "priorities" in that regard.

[EDIT] Also, not even the old guard of the NPF artistic elite would prompt responses like the ones you've given... but I assume that was a joke on your part.

Ok, I'll be supportive when the actual comics start. It's just that so many folks are like, "I'm gonna make a comic, so I'll make a teaser image," and then they don't actually make anything. I'm included in this. It doesn't help that you say you have no ideas, even if it's a joke. It's hard to get excited.

Though, yeah, who else is gonna be in it? Is it just going to be like the Kickass Adventures of Demon and Rick? 'Cause that'd be awesome.

Also, I hope Fenry realizes that he falls into the group detailed in the first paragraph right now and gets to work.

Loyal: Yeah, pretty much. I mean, I know it's just a trailer, so no, nothing actually happened. I was just hoping it would do what a trailer is supposed to do and generate a bit of interest.

And frankly, I'm not letting my sprites write my stories for me, if that's what you mean. I didn't do them custom to carry the burden of my work's value. I did them that way because I'm anal and have very specific ideas that aren't served well by copying the work of others. XD You'll notice my sheets are both laden with tweaks and custom poses, and that Blue is a pixel shorter than other sprites. But that's to better augment their personalities in the story. I'm very much a writer before I am an artist, or else I'd be drawing these instead. :p

So, yeah, I wasn't really expecting people to rave about how nothing actually happened and it was AWESOME!!!1!1 so much as I just hoped it would generate a bit of interest in what's to come and maybe generate a few technical kibitzes.

P.S. Blue and CJ are just posing dramatically. Nothing special going on there other than to look cool. ;)

Edit:

Phil: No, I have every intention of filling out my trailer promises. It does sound a lot like that arc you mentioned by design. Basically, the Adventures of Blue and CJ, with other people added in for awesomeness.

I mean, heck, I made good on my last trailer. I think I did pretty good with it until I lost everything. Never did get back my backgrounds (school took all the pics off their site), but overall, I think it was a worthy effort.

Just so ya know, the following isn't aimed exclusively at you, Blue, or this particular comic, but it has been a growing concern of mine and I feel this is as an appropriate time as any to bring it up.

I hope this doesn't come off as being too jack-assy but it really turns me off when someone tells me--and not in an ironic or joking way--how awesome their own work is. I guess I just prefer a sense of self-deprecation or modesty towards one's art.

Trust me, I appreciate putting half a day's work into something. That's a lot of time to dedicate towards anything. But part of posting comics is the possibility that no one will comment. Still, doesn't mean that no one saw it or no one liked it. I'm guilty of this myself; I don't comment nearly enough but that's mostly because sometimes I just don't have anything to say.

It's just that when a person obviously thinks highly of their own work and I have no constructive criticism, there's really not much I feel I can say that wouldn't just be "yes-ing" or ego stroking. Worse if it's something I don't particularly find engaging or amusing, as will inevitably be the case from time to time.

So I guess what I'm trying to say, in a generic advice sorta way, is concentrate on the story and or jokes you're telling first and worry about how people receive them a little later. And after a while if it's not getting the attention you think it deserves, maybe it's time to rethink the process. Find out what your audience does respond to and go with that.

In any case, I am looking forward to seeing more from you. And everybody else. Hint hint.

But that's a problem with me, I guess. Nobody really gets it when I'm trying to be funny. Verbal humor isn't one of my skills, but if I stop trying, I'll never get it, will I? XD

As I said, I put it up to generate interest. I didn't expect people to rave about a trailer, but apparently, I came off wrong joking around. So, for that, I'm sorry. AND! First comic up. I know, I know, nothing actually happens yet, but at least this one has writing, and every adventure has to start somewhere. Just an FYI that it exists.

Edit: While I'm here, I may as well comment on technical stuff I did, for those who care/are always looking for tips. The tails on the speech bubbles were done differently this time. It didn't exactly streamline things, but here's the difference:

old way: do bubble with ellipse tool, draw a triangle in black one layer below, select transparent inside at 70%, flip down one to a dedicated layer, color fill selection with white, scribble in white on a dedicated layer above the bubble to erase the wall on the tail, tweak as necessary.

new way: do bubble with ellipse tool, draw triangle in white on a layer above OVER THE WALL of the bubble, select inside at 70% and color fill with white right there, flip one layer up and draw outlines around exposed white.

Basically, the new way allows for more control and less pointless scribbling. It takes just as long to get the outlines right, but whatever. I've been happily using this process on bridges and figured I'd try it out here.

Also, I've used a few new effects. The shaking was done with a "fragment" effect and a solid copy on top. The pulsing vein was done with a "lensing" effect. The sun flare was actually done totally custom, believe it or not. There was no picture of the sun I liked, so I drew a white circle, did a Gaussian blur, and put a glow over it for good measure. Then I used a lens flare plugin with a smaller area selected with a rectangle select to keep it under control.

Edit: Big Mac body cast FTW! XD

Black is the absence of light.

As such, assuming there is light involved with a lightsaber's beam, the beam would be harmless to your opponent as it would not be there.

Actually, light sabers aren't made of lasers (aka actual light). Well, except in the newer movies, maybe, but those suck. XP

No, the real explanation is that they're a loop of plasma run through a colored crystal and held in shape by magnetism, so it's definitely possible if, say, the crystal goes off into the non-visible spectrum, either towards IR or UV.

Seems to me that would just make it invisible. Maybe the heat and magnetism and presence of plasma would make some distortion or scattering, but above that, yeah, not black.

What's with the tail?

bluestarultor
09-18-2008, 09:38 PM
What's with the tail?

It a tail. Pretty simple, if you ask me. XD

No, I guess I have to explain further. Troy has always had a tail, even if you look at my 8-bit sprites for him. It's back from when I was new and poor on Gaia and was looking for cheap ways to spruce up my avatar. So I bought a tail for him and some cheap "newb clothes" that I happened to like in combination. After I got him out of the Peasant set, I saved up for an Angelic Guitar to try to get him some wings, since he was based on an angel RP character I'd created ages ago. And it sorta stuck. So Troy has both wings and a tail now, but his wings don't show up in the human world unless he's being angelic (because I'm too lazy to try to sprite them right now) and he wears his tail as a belt to try to hide it when he's in public. Makes it easier to pass himself off as human.

I have the roiginal, and those are resized, and covered by a dialogue arrow.

Or, you could, y'know, just post them or something. XD

I've been really bad about updating my Troy and Blue sprite sheets with the new poses I've created, but those have been made as needed and there's stuff I still need to tweak.

Also, Blue's sheet has the beginnings of a 16-bit sheet for Toshi on it, and I don't think I really want to make available the slouched poses designed to give Toshi a moody teenager appearance for when I get around to modifying things to actually turn him into a cheetah. Frankly, their designs are similar enough that a lot of it can be recycled almost directly for certain poses, while other stuff must be carefully differentiated.

Actually, that's only true of the heads. Toshi still is going to have short sleeves and his spotted tail. Like I said, careful differentiation. Plus keeping the spots straight is going to be a bitch!

Edit: Wow. Actually started working on it and BOY was I wrong. Redoing the head to turn him into a cheetah is proving more challenging than I thought to make look good. The spots are actually surprisingly easy to keep track of.

Pyros: I have no idea what would make a PNG come out as crappy as a JPEG, but I recommend Paint.NET (www.getpaint.net) for your woes. Seriously, even to just improve the readability of some of the text. Also, it's got a REALLY nice resizing feature. That honestly looks like it was resized in either Gale or MS Paint. Also, PDN has very little learning curve, so everything should be readily apparent.

Thadius
10-13-2008, 12:59 AM
Hey, Loyal, I'm sorry, but I can't destroy the earth. This is why:

It is our duty to inform you that as of 7:35:05am UTC on September 10, 2008, the Earth has been destroyed.

The destruction of Earth was first reported by Mr Jonathan Barber of Wisconsin, United States, who spotted that his home-made seismic Earth Detector had ceased to give readings at around 8:00am (2am local time). Several other amateur geocide spotters noticed this at the same time but Mr. Barber was the first to place a telephone call to the IEDAB's Geocide Hotline (+44 115 09Ω 4127, ask for Other Dave) at which point IEDAB officials performed an emergency check of their own instrumentation and verified Mr. Barber's report, as well as fixing the exact time of geocide.

Evidence is still being collated, but preliminary results suggest that the Earth was destroyed pre-emptively by scientists at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, before the commencement of their experiments to locate the Higgs Boson, as a precautionary measure to ensure that the experiment itself could not result in the destruction of the Earth.

FAQ

THE EARTH HAS BEEN DESTROYED! WHAT DO I DO?!!

Don't panic.

If you took the advice in our leaflet, "Preparing For Geocide", you will have made arrangements for this eventuality by preparing a Geocide Refuge either on a space station, ark ship, or other Earth-like planet. If you have done this, now is the time to make your way to your refuge. Do not stop to collect belongings, pets, or sentimental souvenirs of Earth, such as rocks.

If you have not prepared a Geocide Refuge and your local governing body has not created one for you, your best bet is to signal for help using a walkie-talkie or cellular telephone. Possibly a passing extraterrestrial will rescue you.

My baby's in there!

Your baby has most likely been destroyed.

The Earth hasn't been destroyed! What are you talking about?

Some of you will find it tougher to let go than others. There will be counselling sessions running on Pluto starting in mid-April. The first is at 7:15pm on Thursday 18th. BYOO2.

bluestarultor
11-16-2008, 02:59 AM
Liking the distortion on the glaive. Gives it a sense of extreme motion.

Just to get it out of the way, the head needs work as a whole, the character's right leg is clearly not on the ground and frankly doesn't fit with anything physically conceivable to me at the moment with the rest of the pose, and the fingers on the character's right hand have a big space in between that really shouldn't be there.

With a bit of polish, it could be really great.

Loyal
11-16-2008, 10:49 AM
the character's right leg is clearly not on the ground If I remember right, she was aiming for a death-from-above angle and dragoon-jump thingie, not just posing with a weapon.

Technically, I wasn't wrong. Statistically speaking, there were two possible outcomes, being either a) you would be scarred for life, or b) you would not be scarred for life. There is therefore a 50% chance that you would find being turned into Ayla scarring, and a 50% chance you would not.

I have the perfect title for this comic

The World Ends in Blue =D

*crickets*

Believe it or not, I do title all of my comics. I just haven't ever put them at the top. I could, I guess, but most of them would probably ruin the punchline. Also, I'm lazy and not into making sure it's centered at the top and frankly don't like the idea of the title taking up space, anyway. Having it at the bottom in a corner would work, but my bottom corners are both taken up by the logo and copyright info.

In essence, not putting them on is just a design choice I made when I started and it really hasn't hurt anything, so I haven't changed it.

This one is simply titled America Blue. That's actually pretty representative of how I name them.

Khael!
11-23-2008, 12:26 PM

I'm going to try and do the comic in such a way that if you haven't seen the anime, you can still enjoy it, but, of course, you'll enjoy it more if you've seen the anime. This is where I'd normally tell you to go watch it, but I'm not in a force my viewpoint on other people mood right now.

That rooftop is getting a lot of mileage, isn't it? XD

Actually...

If it's the "same" rooftop as I was using, that's REALLY high up. I know you did yours first, but a jumping-off-a-roof comic becomes that much funnier when the roof happens to be attached to a skyscraper or otherwise really tall building. XD

lemme be the first to say.

Dun dun dun.

You have absolutely no idea how long it took me to get a decent pic of my own hand with our digital camera. I used my brother's wall as a green screen (it's even the right color), then tried to fix up the cuff of the shirt to bring out the blue. Manually went in on some of the pixels with blue in an overlay layer, but didn't do a very good job, looking back at it. I still have the layers in a .PDN file, so I can fix it.

I also spent a lot of time with an effect that I'll be using in the next comic, but I'm not going to spoil the surprise.

EDIT: That's pretty good, Ahra. So true. XD

Also because you started out with Nexus, I'm betting. It's easier to gain rivals if you have rivals, because people know you're a rival-able person. The closest I came so far was with that DWAGH thing in my 8-bit arc and the thing with Thad and the animation. Even those were one-shot jokes, though. Nothing came of them.
