I was reading Arhra's comic and thinking to myself, "Who is this guy? Never heard of ... join date 2004?! What the f-?!"
Anyways, good jaerb on the comics everyone.
Except for you, Zarber. You do an excellent jaerb. Keep it up.
And, as far as rival's go, I'm no one's rival but I'm more than willing to be your nemesis, Arhra. Feel free to use my sprites.
I'm rarely found outside my natural habitat of the Roleplaying section.
I could be your rival, Arhra, except I'm more of a disciple. So, I guess I'll be your disciple if no one else would be, or something like that, I dunno.
Woo, rivalry offers. I have to admit I didn't really know how to start, so I thought I'd pick something that happened a lot (rivalries!) and see how things went from there. Now my lack of forethought is revealed! Nooooo!

Hmm. Well, what got me my rival was persistence. Dogged persistence, constant harassment, and generally fouling up any plan he might have.

I'm so sorry Pyros. I didn't know you felt this way.
I thought we were just people who stabbed answers out of each other. Well, more just me doing that to you... Although, there is Arhra V's irrational hatred of Asheth (Hmm, is there a sprite sheet for her?) and our thematic echoing...
I... I just never thought about it that way.
Maybe we need some time apart, so we can re-examine our relationship at a distance.

By the way, Ahra, what program did you make that in? It looks like you've got some moderately advanced effects (or put in a lot of extra pixel work) with those butterfly wing-looking things in the second panel. If it's Paint.NET, I can give you some tips, or I'm sure Mac would be happy to help you with Paint Shop. I think Loyal might use GIMP, too.

I just felt that panel needed a little more detail and that the occaisonal random inexplicable thing would be funnier. It's actually a part of a nebula from an image I had lying around - I put it in and went "Hey, that kind of looks like wings" so I tweaked it a little more.

If you did that all just in Paint, you could do a lot more in more advanced software.
I'll admit I did a LOT of stuff in Paint when I first started doing Gaia avatar edits. There's really nothing wrong with it (unless you're using the Vista version, which has THE ugliest palette I've ever seen), but having a program with layers can be a lifesaver. I can offer you Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/) as one that has a low learning curve and layering ability. It also has an active forum with lots of additional effects to spice things up, if you delve into more advanced stuff.

Technically, Asheth's sprite sheet is that of CT Flea's, only dark red and black colored. I lost the sheet though, and now I'd be copying that other Flea sprite user now.

Uh, Thadius. If you're going to make a sprite comic, you want to save it as a PNG or GIF file.
JPEGs are a lossy file compression format designed for photos. They don't handle sharp changes in contrast well.
PNGs are lossless so they shouldn't have the same issues and they're not limited to 256 colours like GIFs. You can use a PNG optimiser to get the filesize down too if your editing program isn't very good at optimising them. I should probably grab one myself...

I get where you're coming from, but most people don't know how to write me, and if they tried to put how I actually am, it wouldn't make much sense, so I'm generally pretty forgiving. If I put anyone in a comic, and you take issue with how you behave in it, let me know and I'll take it down.

Also, POS, I'd consider you a pretty hard person to write. But then real people are. It's easier to have fake people that SEEM like real people than it is to actually try to figure out what makes a particular real person tick. Or at least if you ARE writing a real person, you have to know them pretty darn well. Which is hard to do with someone you don't have a ton of direct contact with.

Eh, don't feel bad. I'm a phlegmatic, yet caring individual with a dry sense of humor and tendency to be blunt, with skill in diplomacy, and possessing a wide knowledge base, who often speaks in terms that sound like foreign language or gibberish because of my lack of forethought as to my audience when speaking on technical matters.
Plus a bunch of other stuff.
Really, trying to classify me as anything simple will probably make your head explode because as much as I feel for others and like to help people, I'm usually Aspergin' it like Spock when it comes to anything dealing with information.
If anyone wants to write me, I am a douchebag with a balls-ass random sense of humor. Mention something and my mind will come up with something very, very, very vaguely related to it, and go off on that tangent.

That's pretty creative, Nik. XD
On a more selfish note, I hope you guys like what I did with this latest comic. The process I used was basically to take pictures of my hand in front of Phantom's blaringly green walls (the exact color of a green screen!), cut out the green, and work with it from there. The hand on the shoulder is actually mine again, but it came out yellower, which made me very happy to set my hand apart from Troy's. So whose shoulder is it? Actually, a pillow's. XD
I had to kneel for over a quarter hour trying to get those shots. It always was too blurry, had a shadow on the wall, had a bad position with the hand on the shoulder of my shirt, or something else wrong. I finally picked a blurry shoulder picture that I could work with, fixed it up a bit, hid the lines left by the original blur with auras, and re-blurred it to make it look like it was on purpose.
All the color you see in the shirts is fixed up in Paint.NET. I had a dark blue shirt that turned blackish in the camera and often had reflected green from the wall, so I had to put a LOT of work into making this. I could have done a bit better with the cuff in the hand shot, but it serves pretty well.
The injured sprites were done totally custom from a vague outline I tossed together. It bears no similarity to any other injured pose I can think of, but it might still need a bit of work. Technically, the hand is supposed to be holding his belly, but yay for recyclability. XD
As such, I feel less guilty about throwing the comic together as quickly as I did. The parts took a lot of work!

Between the shoulder shot and the hand, I took a good 10, 15, maybe even 20 or even more shots until I got what I wanted, with time running back and forth to the computer. I forget, since I just deleted a lot of them on the camera, but for the shoulder, it came down to a decent 5 or 6 or so. The hand came down to a favorite 3 out of the ones I ultimately kept.

People with eyes, for one. (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showpost.php?p=812055&postcount=1397)
I mean, honestly, the time spent making five terrible sprite comics (I.E. five regular sprite comics) could be used to make one actually good hand-drawn comic if you have the talent for it. And Shyria is a person who has that talent, and this is the very sort of thing where she could potentially become a big deal around here if she were to use it more often. You know, forge a unique forum identity and whatnot.

02-05-2009, 04:03 AM
Well, if nobody noticed, I did make my newest installment for the series. Honestly? Went back to an older style of doing word bubbles. Got a bit sloppy with them, but really, it does offer me more control and less busy work. Until this comic, I'd recently been making the tails in single-pixel-wide lines of anti-aliased white, closing them off at the top, filling them as best I could with the magic wand, and going back to fix everything up pixel by pixel to avoid them looking jagged before using an outlining effect. Frankly, I was doing more work for a product I wasn't happy with, since the plugin didn't handle corners well, making the tail tips very nubbed. By breaking down and going back to a 2-pixel AA line to make the polygon, filling it, and then tracing with a 3-pixel AA line like I started doing way back when, I got much better control over my corners and could better judge whether I liked the shape and fix it by simply covering more or less of the white.
Sometimes, a manual touch is just better.

A sword is typically the weapon of choice for trained soldiers when it comes to small-forces tasks. Spears are more an anti-cavalry weapon, or a weapon to be used BY cavalry, or simply something to be used in massed infantry battles, depending on the type of polearm, as most typically wind up being rather clumsy in close combat IRL. Most close-quarters spearfighters use fighting styles better suited to a pole.
And while a Lamia might find a spear more suitable due to the shape and motions of her body, I doubt that form will find much screentime in this story.
...but that's just my thoughts.
Gawd. I would have made a much better sword-for-hire. A sneakier one, at least."Sneaky" isn't typically a quality one would look for in a bodyguard.

I always assumed Rick wore shades. :sweatdrop
At any rate, nice comic, Mac. Never played Tactics, as you know, so I do agree that a brief intro would be great, at least in here.

And while they are technically just regular glasses that Rick wears, they've been shown as sunglasses in enough other comics/drawings that I'm willing to consider it being "both" as canon at this point. Whaaaat??? First the leather jacket turning out to be a hooded sweater, and now the sunglasses turning out to be regular glasses?!?!? MY WORLD HAS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN! NOTHING MAKES SENSE ANYMORE!!

I figured out they were glasses, Mauve; get with the program. True, I drew him with shades in every appearance in Aquamancy no Mike, but shut up. I think I'm the one who made his hoodie into a biker jacket, too, now that I think about it...

As you may have guessed, I got extremely lazy with the backgrounds in that last comic and also stole most of the dialogue.
Also any people who appeared in the comic before this one but not in this one, I couldn't think of anything mean or funny to say to you.

I read this as "That's me Death Star Laser."
And now I can't get the idea of Thadius being a multi-dimensional pop-eye the destroyer of worlds out of my head.
It's pretty awesome.

I will do that now. It is too awesome to NOT do. It cries out to be made into a reality.
The only thing that could stop that...naw, actually, I'm pretty sure it's too awesome to fail.

After testing it, I can safely say it doesn't seem to work quite as well.
Although I have to admit part of the purpose of that line was just to make it clear it was a snowglobe. The snowflakes were nowhere near as obvious in the original.

I feel like there's a subtle, underlying message.
However I doubt it's directed at me, as I find it to be completely indecipherable.

I'm telling you people. Shared Hallucination. That, and for that distasteful shade of green, I got the car for $5000 cheaper. Such savings can be easily used for a quick paint job.
