Woohoo! Philbo #30!
phil_
02-11-2012, 12:11 AM
Um, Rick, I've been meaning to talk to you about this for a while. You know that one where I throw Philbo off a cliff and become king of Fairytown? The one you have numbered as Philbo's Super Perfect Party Adventure 15? Yeah... that one's actually called Philbo is Thrown off a Cliff. Philbo's Super Perfect Party Adventure 15 is actually the fake beard comic, though you've got some weirdness there putting that one twelfth and then the crayon comics and this is getting more complicated than I thought when I started this post.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is this is #29. Sarcastic meta-jokes don't get to be numbered Philbo comics any more than drunk sketches or cat haikus.
Thanks for archiving my stuff, though.

I've been doing this Philbo stuff for almost four years and I only have almost thirty comics to show for it. That's, like, if I did monthly updates, I would still have missed a year. I don't think I get to claim milestones.

Hey, Rick, you haven't been reading that other NPF comic thread, have you? The one where I'm pretty much like "NPF comics suck?" That doesn't apply to you, I hope you know that.

You mean the thread with all'a this?As I mentioned in the chat, yeah, the old comics were pretty much uh... not so good.So
like
Is this a comic about the forum, or is it just a comic with a bunch of forum names attached to characters that has the potential to degenerate into nothing just like all the other ones?Guess I'll just have to cling to my outdated paradigm because this is the only way I know how to fit in.

I had a sprite folder once upon a time. It's probably on a disc I have, but I'll never get to check because my CD drive is unable to be used. Oh, so, you know, I think I should probably go ahead and confirm that the JAQ book was not part of the April Fool's gag (I mean, other than being a dick about whether or not it was). My original plan was just to let you forget about it until it was complete and then whip out a huge announcement, but hey, maybe I should do that while everyone is actually paying attention.
So yeah. It is actually a thing, and all the stuff I wrote in that post is actually true. Even though I've barely touched the comic thread outside of April Fool's Days, I've been working on this book on and off for two-and-a-half years now, and now it is fairly close to being finished. There will be a further related surprise down the road, too.

And of course the biggest April Fools prank of the comic is that Rick is not wearing glasses or a grey shirt anymore-- Clearly this means that is not actually Rick, which is solid proof that JAQ2 does, in fact, exist somewhere. CLEARLY.

RickZarber
04-01-2014, 04:09 PM
In the alternate universe of which we (usually) get a glimpse on the first of April, JAQ was adapted into a successful animated series--too successful, for long after the story should have been over, the producers demanded that the comic continue to update in order to justify more episodes. During the inevitable long stretches where this was not possible, the dreaded filler episodes quickly eroded all goodwill any of its original supporters from NPF ever held. AU Rick continues to make the comic, but he hates it, and so does everyone else.

A zipper broke, so I had to summon a Brownie to fix it. But the Brownie wouldn't sew unless I offerd him a saucer of milk, and there's no milk in this box, so I summoned a cow. But then I couldn't summon the Brownie back, because the milk would disappear with the cow, at least as long as it was a normal cow. So I had to summon a Cattlesaucer, which is kinda like a flying saucer (UFO and crockery) made out of cow, which was abominable enough for me to keep it there and summon the Brownie back. But the Brownie kinda freaked out about the half-meat, half-machine, half-flatware abomination blasting milk out its meteor-alloy udders (and who could blame him, in such a cramped space). Anyway, he bailed, and now milk is everywhere and do you think the manager will believe us if we say the zipper was broken when we picked it up?

Oh Comic Mac, don't you know that when you say lines like that it means you're totally going to end up completely embroiled in that biz? It's like you've never watched an action movie sequel. Not too worried about Ninja ala King though. Faking your own death in order to lure the enemy into a false sense of security so that they never see the backstab coming is like the eighth thing you learn in ninja training.

There are 108 disiplines in the Way of Miyagi. First being always martial arts (not my bad grammar, that is the literal translation). Second, do not bunch up because that is how we end up with mass shinobi graves and story material for Chuck Norris movies. Third do not start a fight that you not certain that you can win. Fourth, actually kicking them in the ass is funny and completely humiliating to your opponent so do it. Ninja mooks are the sorts of humorless jerks who don't stick around past lesson one due to lack of patience and because master's walking stick hurts like you wouldn't believe.

Thieves are taught to run, jump, ambush people from behind trees, and throw knives. Good thieves take more advanced courses like THV231 - How To Literally Steal The Shirt Off A Guy's Back, and THV302 - Ventilation Shafts And You. Great thieves are taught how to maintain good relationships with their friends even while robbing them blind.
There's a whole process to it, and it's as cutthroat as it is demanding. Over 63% of applicants wash out after the first month from the hazing rituals alone.

But will it come again? Which is the same question one asks after a bear tears apart their camp, so we should leave a few bits of food near the ground next October, just to be sure.

He has returned, dropped off his yearly backwards birthday present, and disappeared like he came.
Also, did you know you can tell how cold the winter will be by counting the stripes on a GC comic? It's true.

I know I said comic friday, but it you have read my post here (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpost.php?p=1245564&postcount=1037), then you realize this past week has been crazy. The comic is still being made and should be up this week

Do what you got to, man. NPF comics isn't anyone's main priority at this point, as much as I'd like us all to still be in high school*.
*Except for me and everyone like me who experienced high school as a continuation of a twelve yer sentence of incarceration with no crime accused, judged guilty, or committed. They get to go free in my mind because some small islands of justice still exist there surrounded by the vast sea of "Life and Fate are capricious."

It's nice to see the comic thread still has some life to it. Looks good, Daimo! I like the speed lines and the complex backgrounds. Comic-Mac lives in a shitty neighborhood. XD

Fun Fact, that neighbourhood is a 16bit upscaling from lvl 1 of Double Dragon.
Also making FF6 version sprites of Poison and Linda were evil

Rick, you're doing it all wrong. You have to play hard to get. Be all "No, you can't come! I quest alone!" Adventurers are contrary, like goats.

Good luck finding Melfice to voice his lines again. Or BMG. Or Demon with a Glass Hand. Or Skyshot.

Seriously though, I actually made redux versions of the first five JAQs all the way back in 2007, but I never posted them anywhere. I did those because the first few didn't have even panel heights between the rows, and in the last few Rick is resized to non-100% sizes because I was still full of dumb. I also shrunk the font down to what it was in the remaining comics and Lucas'd it up by adding a few words to comic 5, changing some 8-bit sprites to 16-bit, and changing quite a few backgrounds. You can note that the backgrounds in the final panels of comic 100 match the first few panels of redux #1, so the ending of the comic makes a lot more sense visually. These remade strips were to be exclusive to the book, but I figured what the hell. Have a freebie.

"My target audience won't miss it" is objectively false, but I don't blame you for wanting to stop. Wish you well, dude, thanks for making good comics.
Take care, take care, take care.

Hey people, thanks for all your support; coming from those of you who have been with me all these years means so much to me like you wouldn't know.
However, this is not a true end to my appearances here. There may be a time when I come across a new inspiration, and if that happens, I might just make a quick return.
Until then, or otherwise... well, life goes on.
Also for those of you who were wondering, I've read Winnie the Pooh many times in my youth.
