Generally, you can tell if you didn't make it by the following:
You crop/resized it.
You really didn't mess with it any more than that.

I kinda made mine. Well I recolored it, altered the peace sign, and animated it. All I need now is for someone to add some transparency to that ugly whiteness behind him.

Or you could Alt+Print Screen the forum, acquire the color of the background behind the name and such, and paste it in the white space.

But that's really not too much of making your own. Recoloring is easy. Anyone can do it. The edit job of that is easy.

Alt Printscreen. Copy into MS Paint. Acquire. "Custom Colors". Write down values. Go to Gif animation program. There should be something like "Custom Color Set". Take an unused color slot. Write the values down.

Well, I created several of my own avatars through MS Paint, but I have yet to draw one of my own. in some cases the amount of effort I had to put in to getting them is enough for me to call them mine.

Mostly I just take a couple of images and remove the parts I like from each of them, maybe isolate part of the images to change the colors, and then arrange them. But I normally don't create avatars from scratch, as I don't own a scanner or a drawing stylus pad.

My current avatar, I just cropped/resized, though.

I have an anime obsession. This leads to the creation of avatars whenever I get an idea or feeling that I believe is applicable to my state of mind and attitude. If I stick with an avatar for more than a week or so, then I definitely struck a vein with myself.

I suppose that even adding little crap to the pictures I edit doesn't count, though.
