This is sorta something inspired after finishing Star Ocean and playing a little bit of Final Fantasy.
One thousand years ago, tragedy struck the Earth, nearly destroying the world. Nuclear war broke out among the nations, killing millions of people and wreaking havoc on every ecosystem. With the thought of staying on the ruined planet was terrifying to most, and many migrated off planet.
For those who were unable or refused to leave, the future looked bleak. The skies became darkened with onyx clouds, and radiation was causing mutations in the wildlife. Only the creation of hastily made, self contained shelters limited the genetic changes that would follow through the ages.
Only a decade ago had the surface become safe to venture back out into the world, however Earth has become a vastly different place. Creatures that resembled monsters of fantasy roamed the lands, and everywhere was an untamed wilderness still covered in the age old darkness. It was a reborn planet, filled with untapped potential, but not without risk.
In the ten years that have passed since then, every community began expanding, seeking out to rebuild. As they each came in contact with each other alliances and fueds were made. On this particular continent, three forces came into control: "Rab," a nation ruled by a somewhat unorganized Democracy, "N'Revat," ruled by an elected for life President, and "Loteh," which was more of business than a nation.
We enter at the beginning of the first war of these nations.
Technology: Aside from life support systems, not much has been saved during the underground times. In terms of weaponry, though, lasers and battle armor have been retained and slightly modified. If you want to ask, think about Final Fantasy 6 (Especially the Armor), only replace Magic with crystal batteries. Lasers are used instead of conventional weaponry due to greater affectiveness against monsters.
Monsters: Think of those that pop up in any classic RPG. They won't appear every five steps, but there are enough to be wary of. In other words, don't plan picnics; it's not sunny outside anyway.
Characters: Humans. No magic, but physical and mental genetic enhancements are allowed. Stronger, faster, and generally better due to evolution that accured.
Skills that doesn't exist: Black Magic, Time Magic, White Magic, Summoning Magic, Blue Magic, Morph, Sword Magic, Magic Sword. (Yes, Sword Magic and Magic Sword are two different skills, but it doesn't matter.)
Landscape: Since it's too dangerous to set up big cities like before, compact shelters have been made at strategic points in the area.
Character Sheet:
Character: Ripel
Age: 17
Appearance: 5'8," red sunglasses, and a red coat over a blue shirt and black trousers. Black gloves and shoes, as well as his short spiky hair complete his outfit. Also, usually hidden from view is a holster that holds a needle point dirk.
Specialty: Dirk/Monster Empathy/Stealing
Background: Part of a Letoh research team studying the planet and the wildlife, he found that they had an affinity to communicating with the beasts. Not that it could do much good, for most of the creatures had an instinct that needed to be subdued before forcing any any control over them; for that reason it was decided that he would raise a creature from birth.
That's when, five years ago, he got an egg dubbed a Chocobo egg, which grew into a large yellow bird he named Boco.
That's aside the point though. The research he was involved in dealt mostly with planetary conditions, specifically restoring the sky to its former glory. However, with the war approaching, the team he was part of was recalled, and he was reassigned to a different assignment.
Specifically, he was ordered to help maintain a unit of Monster Empaths.
At this time, he has just finished the capture and raising of the creatures necessary to compliment the human counterparts, and the assignments are about to be given out. For now, he is reluctantly waiting for his next orders in the borderline base of Ahacra.
Note: When making a background, be sure to place your character in Ahacra. At the moment, nothings set in stone yet, so if I can find it reasonable, I'll go with it.
That is, if there's enough people interested, heh.
