well, I'd say Earth and Beyond, but thats now defunct. However, City of Heroes is a pretty good game, and the developers seem pretty commited to keeping it going too. World of Warcraft looks promising, but it is a Blizzard endevor, and i've been disapointed by them before.

I can't really pick a favorite, seeing as how that leaves me with one game to choose from in the genre (I.E., only MMO I've played). I'm actively playing FFXI... lots of people here would probably disagree, but it's high-quality in my eyes.

Final Fantasy XI
Ultima Online (UOGateway)
Toadwater
Ragnarok Online (kadeRO, xRO, and many more)
Everquest (EQEmu)
All except FFXI don't nessecarily need subscription fees. Search around.

pay2play: none. I've never actually played an MMORPG that you pay for...
free: Mystic Journey (BYOND). Neoexdeath the Necromancer > j00.

EVE - Online. It's P2P but worth it, in my opinion. And you can get a 14 day free trail to see if you like it first. Not stereotypical RPG though, as it's based in spaceships and you don't level up (although you can increase skills, etc).

Raerlynn: With most of those you listed, though, it's very illegal to not pay the subscription fee.
Not that I've ever been scared of a few legalities or anything...
My choices goes to a.) City of Heroes for now and b.) World of Warcraft as soon as open beta is out (a few weeks).

Don't play any of them. MMORPGs are evil and will steal your soul.
Ehh, EverQuest was good...BACK IN THE DAY. So I guess my vote goes to World of Warcraft (when it comes out).

EQEmu: I really don't give a shit. Verant has broken its own ToS so many times in and of themselves its funny. Not to mention that the ToS is illegal anyways. Also look into their banning spree for duped money on Star Wars: Galalxies.
Toadwater: Legit
Final Fantasy XI: Legit
Ragnarok Online: Meh. So what. If they really thought it was a big concern, Private RO servers wouldn't be a dime a dozen.
UOGateway: Same as above.

After playing Everquest, Anarchy Online, Final Fantasy XI, Lineage 2, and City of Heroes I have decided that after a while ALL MMORPGS get entirely too repetitive and lame and are just a huge time/money sink. That being said I still wish I could play something original right now :) Of the games I mentioned above, I thought Anarchy Online was honestly the best. (best player environment, most fun) FFXI was pretty good but so straight and grinding, CoH got just too... I don't know, pointless (sorry for quitting guys). EQ and L2 I didn't play a whole lot, they didn't hook me right away.
I would avoid MMORPGs like I would avoid crack.
oh... and maybe look for me when WoW launches

UO on free servers actually is legal, from my understanding, because of something involving how UO never stated on their box (originally) that a credit card and monthly fee was required.
How are free FFXI servers legit? Unless you meant your account is legit, in which case *Shrug*
And how has Verant broken it's ToS? Not that I doubt it, more cause I'm interested.
I always tried getting on some free EQ servers when I had an EQ account but was never quite good enough to get them working.

Everquest is sent from the Devil, or worse, I would avoid it at all costs. Evercrack is not an exageration. Shadowbane was never really a good game, and it gets super boring super fast. Final Fantasy XI can be fun, but only in short bursts, and really only if you have some friends that are into it. They had too many annoying quests... A quest to use chocobos, a quest to dual class, a quest for each advanced class, even quests to allow higher levels.
My vote is for World of Warcraft right now. From being in the beta, I can tell you that it is better than all of the ones I have mentioned, plus it isn't finished yet so it SHOULD only get better. It has tons of pros, IE nice graphics for MMORPG, best tradeskills that I've seen, and I'm really exited to see how they make raid groups work (the special raid bosses, not simple raidgroups)(www.Worldofwarcraft.com if you don't know what I'm talking about). However it has a few cons too. For those who have played Warcraft 3 on B.net, the same internet losers that you've seen there are in WoW. Now, all games online have them, but for some reason they seem especially attracted to blizzard games. Another con is that due to it's incompletion, lots of things don't work right, but that should be fixed before it goes live. The programmers are a great bunch of guys, who actually understand why people play these games, and try to make it fun. Let me tell you that they have thus far succeeded.
In short, it World of Warcraft lives up to it's full potential, it will by far be the best MMORPG that I have seen.

Guild Wars isn't out yet, but it's made by the same people as City of Heroes and, get this, is apparently not pay to play. I mean, that's awesome. The idea is that there will be expansion packs to buy every one or two months but you don't have to.

Cyclone: Yeah, Guild Wars looks fairly cool. From what I hear, though, it's more Diablo-like than any of the current MMORPGs (not that that's a bad thing). I'm keeping my eye on it while I drool over WoW.

Apparently you can play with any other player in the towns and such, where it works just like a normal MMO. However, when you leave the towns, it creates an instanced area and only other members of your party can come into your "instance". This means no kill stealing, no waiting for spawns, etc, but keeps most of the social aspects.
