Most people I know don't listen to the music when they are playing games, and most times, they are not meant to. Even background music can be enjoyable if you stop to listen though. Especialy when it is apropriate to the circumstances of the game. So my question is, what is the best music you have ever heard in a video game. Here's my list.
1. Final Fantasy VI- It has the best boss theme ever in any game I have ever played and has a great variety of songs on a 65 song sound track. Most of it is very well writen.
2. Halo- Most people are not concerned with music when they have 200 flood up their ass. If you have time, though, stop and listen. It's a very good score.
3. Golden Sun: The Lost Age- Has the music from both games in the series. I recomend the Venus Lighthouse music, one of my favorite video game songs. To enter the sound check, go to the battle mode and talk to the girl in the southwest corner while holding L and R.

I agree with Golden Sun and Final Fantasy VI. Much of the music from Fire Emblem is really good, too.

the music from Red Alert 2. I tell you, nothing puts you in the mood to invade like "Hellmarch 2."

Oh god, let's go down the list:
FF: Mystic Quest has some nice ones, like Last Castle and Middle Tower
FF7: Battle Themes are wicked, and the overworld score, as well as Interrupted By Fireworks, are incredibly well done.
FF8: As much as people bash this game, it has some of my favorite songs in here. For battle themes, the basic and orchastrated versions of the battle theme are nice, Force Your Way, both normal and Black Mage Flavor are good, and Battle the Sorceress is an incredibly dramatic piece. I also like the airship's theme, as well as Balamb's.
FF9: Battle theme is nice, love the overworld theme.
FFX: Excellent soundtrack. Raid, Takeoff, and Those Who Approach are wonderfully tense songs, I play them during high tension battles online. Wandering Flames, A Revealed Truth, and This Is Your Tale are all excellent pieces as well. And for peaceful ambiance, nothing beats Besaid.
FFX-2: Ummm...I really don't have much to say about this piece, there aren't many good ones here. Among them though are Calm Lands, Mushroom Rock Road, and Eternity.
FFXI: The Battle Themes are all excellent, from fight alone, to fighting in parties, to fighting MVPs, the themes are each unique and very well done.
Zone of The Enders 2: Beyond the Bounds is fun, and I love Zakat and Air Battle.
Soul Caliber II: Here I have a few favorites lurking; including Unwavering Resolve, Hubris, Hubris: Reprisal, Confrontation, Healing Winds, Healing Winds: Reprisal, If There Were Any Other Way, Nothing to Lose, and Hellfire.
Legend of Dragoon: Incredible music, all around. The boss and big boss themes really do get dramatic as the fight progresses, and the Battle Against Melbu Frahma is an incredible piece of work.
Smackdown vs. RAW: Most aren't original songs, but the one I really love more than any other is Randy Orton's Theme; Burn In My Light, by Mercy Drive.
Baldur's Gate I/II: Excellent Battle themes, very dramatic. The basic overworld theme and main themes of both are very well done.
And that's just a sample of my favorites :)

Umm... Everything? I love almost all my video game music. Final Fantasy games, Dragon Warrior games, Halo, Command and Conquer... "We will stop them now!" "Warfare" "Mechanical Man"... Warcraft... They're all good.
Wild Arms 2 - Battle with Lord Blazer. This is one of my favourites... I even did my final computer animation project using this music.
Basically though, anything that fits the mood of the part of the game where it is heard is automatically perfect to me. This is why I own more CDs of Video Game music than I do 'popular' music. I can't decide on which is my favourite because they're all my favorites. Hell, if you composed a list of all the games ever made, about 90% of them would be on my favourites list.

By the way, please don't double post, it's against the forum rules. You will notice that there is an "edit" button on the bottom of the page, it allows us to add any afterthoughts we have.
Double posting takes up bandwidth, and too much wasted bandwidth can cause the server to slow down, making our friends with 56k modems very unhappy.
Just thought you should know.

Yes, make me unhappy.
But anyway. I loved the FFVII Boss Music. And Melodies of Life form FFIX. ...I can't think of anything else right now, I'll post more when I can think of more.

The scores from FFVII and FFVIII. They are both beautifully done.

Katamari Damacy has some pretty good shit on it. And its in Japanese to boot, so that means its, like, hardcore or something.

My roommate has the Halo 2 soundtrack, and it is incredible. That soundtrack rivals LoTR, Harry Potter(didn't like the movie quite as much as the soundtrack), my travel music(Meteora by Linkin Park), and some of the other music I like, but can't remember. For a video game, Halo 2 a movie quality soundtrack, and that's saying something.

First off, sorry about the second post, it was my first reply and i saw the Short reply thingy and went all retarded thinking I had to do something. I apalogize for my retarded...-ness-thingy.
Last I have to commend Nobuo Uematsu, ALL the work he has done is extrordenary. From "One Winged Angel" to the classic victory music, everything is good if he does it. Despite the fact that all of his old school music is 'middy' based, everything sounds like it is orchestrated.
Anyone agree?
I wont do it again this time.

Castlevania III, yes the third NES Castlevania game, takes my vote for my favorite game soundtrack. One part nostalgia, one part acknowledgement of its amazing writing and one part just giving it props for the amazing way it was done on such limited midi technology.
Its followed by Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (its all about Orlox's Room), Zelda: Link to the Past, Mario 64, Kirby's Adventure, Super Metroid (damn moody and amazing), Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger and Sim City 4: Rush Hour.

I like Kingdom Heart's music, especialy Simple and Clean in all it's variations. The music that plays when Sora stabs himsel with the evil keyblade moves me every time I hear it. And the Halloween Town music never gets old.

The orchestrated music/rock of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. That stuff is wonderful for anyone who likes to listen to in-game music. Also, Gungrave:OD has some pretty awesome heavy metal music.

I always thought FF3 had just awesome music all the way through, it was the first game that actually brought out emotional stuff with music that I played.
Chrono trigger also had some great music, the waterfall land, I feel like a jerk for not knowing the date or name or it, I thnik it was just barely AD? like 1020 or something? But anyway I loved the music on that place it was just an all around cool place hah. And the dome music was cool to.
And on a side note a game that I was veyr dissapointed in music wise was Star Ocean 3, veryyyy dissapointing.

I have found some remixes at www.ocremix.org that I like a lot more than the original scores.
The three that have made it to my play list are-

I don't remember Ico having much music.
Anyway, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has the best score for any game ever. They even used MP3 files instead of MIDIs to keep the quality up.
Also noteworthy: Mario 64, and Goldeneye.
The Halo 2 OST is very impressive, I've been going crazy learning it all on guitar over the last week. I love the main theme especially.
And you have to love the Legend of Zelda music, for any of the games, it's always so original and great to listen to. Every time I hear it, or even talk about it, it makes me want to play Zelda so much it burns. I feel like it now...

FF3j, FF5, and FF6 are all good. Heck, that theme that plays when you die in FF3j is great. It also plays when Desh (aka Dash, in some translations) dies. And the theme that Death on the Snowfield is based on is great. But how could you forget about Terra in Black!? (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00206) Battle with Gilgamesh and Deception are currently my favorites. And, Home, Sweet Home, and The Prelude of Empty Skies, and Both Final battle themes and "What?". It's a pity that there are few remixes of FF5 on OcRemix...
Also, a few of the Zone of the Enders themes for the GBA.
Finally, the music is not good cause Uematsu makes it. Uematsu is good, therefore the music is good. And, before I forget, I also like the Battle Theme for FF2j. That's a good thing, since you have to spend ungodly amounts of time hearing it.

The Wild ARMs/Wild ARMs: Alter Code F soundtracks (Game and it's remake, basically) have the best soundtrack, in my book. The only reason I'm even bringing up WA is because, the remake pulls out Zed's theme (; ;) and completely, utterly destroys Courage. By and large, however, it is better. Michiko Naruke is a composer goddess.

I have to say that my current favorite is Half-Life 2. There's nothing that gets your blood pumping like catching some mad air on the boat and then having rock music pick up as the helicopter chases you down.
It's very well done.

Alien Hominid, by a long shot. I just got my copy and it is perhaps the last good shoot-em-up side-scroller in existance. The multiplayer option is great, and there's something satisfying about biting off the heads of screaming FBI agents...Check out the original Alien Hominid (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/59593) by the flash king himself

I don't remember Ico having much music.
It didn't really. I just liked what music it had, I thought it was the best. Especially the ending theme.

"You Were There" from Ico.
