Hey everybody,

I recently caught a few ads on Spike TV for their upcoming Video Game Awards (it airs Dec. 14th but I'm not sure what time, check out their website if you want) and thought to start this thread to see who everyone thinks should win the award for game of the year. Maybe we could tally up the replies here and then compare them to which game actually wins that night? It might be cool too to send these results to Spike TV after we're done, especially if our favorites aren't on their list. So I'm going to dig around and try to find a way to contact them too.

Here's this year's choices from Spike's website (if you don't agree, just put down your favorite):

Burnout 3: Takedown (Electronic Arts)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Rockstar Games)
Half-Life 2 (Vivendi Universal Games)
Halo 2 (Microsoft Game Studios)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Konami)

Also, what's your all-time favorite? (I'm predicting Super Mario Brothers and CS will top the list here.)

Thanks everyone and I'll keep you posted on who wins in case you won't catch it.

Jason

Paper Mario 2 is an awsome game that most people are thrown off of because of its seemingly child-oriented theme. But in fact, this game is on par with the original mario RPG, and is one of the few good RPGs nintendo's made in a while: It is some of the best artwork I've seen all year for gamecube.

It will be ba a tough match between Half-Life 2 and GTA San Andreas. But, regrettably, San Andreas will win. I say regrettably because the reason is a stupid one. That is, Steam. The fact that Steam requires you to be connected to the internet to update itself before you can play can mean delays between you and your play time. Which, well, sucks. That, plus the load times, and you can imagine.

MGS 3's overly cinematic style MIGHT make it boring for some (I find it interesting to look at, and plan on getting it ASAP)

Burnout 3 may be a wildcrad here, but the three newer games overshadow it greatly.

Halo 2 IS a wildcard. It just might win. However, I have faith in GTA or HL2 winning. After all, HL2 does the same thing as Halo 2 (great FPS) with an actually good storyline, (Halo 2's story is there, but the campaign mode seems to get boring, right?), great physics system, and solid multiplay. Halo 2 only has multiplay. AWSOME multiplay, but still just mutliplay. And, GTA is GTA. Doesn't compare to an FPS.

However, you forgot to include the one game to RULE THEM ALL!!!!!!!! World of Warcraft!!!!! I'd say that World of Warcraft takes the win here.

Let's see...Spike TV is hosting it (Male centered TV).

Sponsored by XBOX (Hey, near half the games are XBOX games)

Hey, and there also all Mature games and sequels to past games that were popular. Yeah, I don't seen much fairness in this. Usualy one of these contests at least puts one game from another system up to make it appear like they aren't trying to do this.

The ones with sex in them.

Seriously, I'd have to say Naruto: Narutimate Hero 2.

But really who thinks spike tv's going to give a actuall fair rating of the games. They are going to do what has to most hype and pays them the most money. So since it is a complet farce and not a real compitition, added with the fact that Xbox is hosting it, this thread is pointless they are going to give the reward to Halo2, even though it far from deserves it.

But in a real compitition i dont think any of those games (maybe half life 2 but i havnt played it) would even be in the running.

I don't understand either part of this post. GTA is not a crap game, it's got more freedom than most games these days, and it's got a lineage of fun behind it. I can see it winning.

Halo 2 I could understand not winning. It was a great game - AKA not a crap game - but it seemed to be overshadowed in means to the original, mostly talking about main campaign. Whatever beef Psr has to the Halo series , I don't care, but it did get hundreds all over the world, if not thousands, into fragfest linkparties.

Paper Mario and Tales of Phantasia were rockin, but they're definately not top games of the year. Tales has a good chance of getting some awards but Paper mario isn't going to get much more than honorable mentions, at the least. I'm not backing up these games to be ignored, I'm just being realistic.

If anything I know Ninja Gaiden is gonna win something.

I've only played one of those games (MGS3, roxxorz). I know GTA: SA is going to win. Because it's GTA.

I personally found GTA3 and GTA: VC to be mediocre games. The graphics were terrible, voice overs that made me want to gag, mindless missions, no story, bad controls(evertime I run I ******* crouch!), ect, ect.
Maybe it's because I don't like the "sandbox" gameplay. Or it could be watching my brother and friends blowing the **** out of the "sandbox."

Its sponcerd by Xbox, GTA is a PS2 exclusive, you talk about being realistic, It isnt going to win, it will be halo 2 hands down, even though both games are crap. They arnt fun to play are not originol and just bad games.

I was talking about symponia also

So, it's sponsored by Xbox? Yup, Halo 2 WINS!

Though, in actuality, Half-Life 2 and GTA:SA would be the real winners. Don't ask me in which order. Probably GTA. However, remove Steam, and provide everyone with high-end systems, and HL2 would win easily.

And, have you ever even played those games, Psr? My guess (and it's just a guess) is no. Chances are, you own a Gamecube. Or a PS2. I own one too. But, I know good games when I see them. Just because GTA's earliest installment is beyond the age of the old school, doesn't mean it sucks. And, just because Halo /Halo 2 began with the Xbox just recently (2001, was it? Or 2002? I suck at remembering dates!) doesn't mean it sucks! I've played both games, and they rock. The sheer freedom in GTA makes up for the graphics, and the voice overs are ok. Although, in GTA3 the voice overs kinda sucked, you gotta play Vice City! It rocks.

As far as Halo/Halo 2, there are tons of people who will tell you: it is THE BEST console FPS ever, since Goldeneye. See how deep I gotta dig to find a DECENT game? Anyways...., Psr, I recommend you read this. (http://www.nuklearpower.com/oldvsnew.php)

If you're going to state your opinion, state it without being an ass about it. Other people will undoubtibly like these games (especially since they're popular) and constantly calling a game crap whenever you mention it just makes you look like you're on a crusade to make peole think its crap AND that you want people to argue with you about it.

So don't. Cuz then the mods will do something about it.

-----

And Jarlax. Word up! Suikoden 2! Word UP!

...ahem. Although I don't know if I can say its my favorite game, its next to the top. But anyway, its not a 2004 gae, which they're talking about here.

-----

As a side note, I wonder why they haven't put up Metroid Prime 2 on the list. I mean, just as a way to attempt to look non-bias. Maybe they were afraid it might...win? Oh, for shame a Nintendo game should win a contest on a Male centered, 'Mature' station. Eventhough a bunch of guys who worked on Half-Life 1 worked on both Prime 1 and 2.

Metal Gear Solid 3 should win this year's award show, but it won't, because Spike TV sucks ass when it comes to deciding good games.

I'd be pissed off if Halo 2 or Burnout won. Any of the other games on that list are deserving enough. But I'm shocked that Burnout 3 made it in over Metroid Prime 2. ::sigh:: Seriously, pick up a Gamecube sometime, Spike TV.

basically this whole thing is about which game was hyped the most and delivered at least part of it so no matter what games that have been overly commercialized would be present and more than likely win.

Spike TV's Video Game Awards are more Played-The-Most awards rather than Actually-A-Good-Game awards, a popularity contest if you will, which ultimately leaves any Nintendo original out of most categories. Which I'm disappointed by.

Zelda: Majora's Mask is the best I've played.

Seriously? I played the first Paper Mario and got really mad that it didn't meet the standard that Super Mario RPG had set (I consider it the best RPG on the SNES). I decided not to play the second because I figured it would be more of the same.

Halo 2 probably deserves the award with the best multiplayer I've seen in a while, but I haven't played any of the other games on the list because I only have a Gamecube. :( Being poor sucks.

I highly suggest going back and replaying SMRPG. Most of the time, and I know this by experience, those "standards" cease to exist the moment you remove the nostalgia cap. Call it a rude awakening, or something, but you tend to see games for what they are, rather than what you thought they were.

As for meh favorite game, I've been saying LoZ: Majora's Mask for the past few years.

Wait, is this Spike thing about the greatest game of all time, or just of the year? I mean, I think practically all the games listed just came out this year, so stating one of those is the best game of all time, is kinda stretching things.

As for my personal favs, I have to say that The Secret of Monkey Island, is my all time favorite. Why? Because its very funny, it makes you think, and its got a three headed monkey. What more can you want?

The best recent game I've played has to be Jak 2. Sure, its damn difficult at times, but between the visuals, the story, and the various missions, it makes it WORTH the pain. Only thing I really have to complain about is getting the damn orbs afterwards, so you can watch the cut scenes again without having to play through all over again.

And yes I've played Jak 3, and while its no slouch, Jak 2 is just that much better than Jak 3.

My best game EVER? Probably FF6. Chrono Trigger comes in as a VERY near second, but Magus isn't such a factor for me.... And, by the way, I actually played FF8 BEFORE playing FF6. I also played FF5 before FF6. And all of these I played after 2000. Not much nostalgia there...

Excuse me while I laugh.

Seriously? I played the first Paper Mario and got really mad that it didn't meet the standard that Super Mario RPG had set (I consider it the best RPG on the SNES).

I think you're mixing terminology here. Standards were set by things like Final Fantasy - decide amongst yourselves which - Halflife 1, Super Street Fighter, Mario Brothers 3, and to a lesser degree Max Payne and the games like that. Setting standards is for the classics, playing off of the same tune is for great games, at least for a while.

If you need an example, try things like Guilty Gear series, or Halo, or the like. None of them broke the mold, they just perfected what was good - and in most cases, improved it. I mean it's like saying Ninja Gaiden was a revoutionary game. Not really. It was fucking awesome but it is another platformer, just totally polished, sped up, and made to rock da hizzy.

Ahem.

Yeah Spike TV is like Fox News to Bush. "Of course he's great! We get money from him!" This was biased from day 1.

But I digress.

Damn I need to play Sukioden 2.

I think I'd have to go with, for the best game ever, probably halflife 1 or 2. I'd say 2 if I had played it, but good god, does anyone know a single FPS that tops HL? Hell half the games these days borrow from it's system and fail miserably.

Well, there's... Half-Life 2.... Yeah...

And, I must say, Super Mario RPG wasn't bad, but I liked other games better.

And, I still think that HL2 SHOULD win this contest. However, we should stop argueing who WILL win the contest. Xbox already secured their Halo 2, remember?

6A defintion of 'standard' in The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, from Dictionary.com:A degree or level of requirement, excellence, or attainment.

I played the first Paper Mario and got really mad that it didn't meet the standard that Super Mario RPG had set (I consider it the best RPG on the SNES).

So, this sentence means "I got really mad that it didn't meet the level of excellence that Super Mario RPG had set for any sequel that might be made." I wasn't referring to RPGs in general, but rather the series of Mario RPGs.

And yeah, I would replay SMRPG, but my sister took my SNES to college. Maybe I can make her bring it back for the Christmas break.

SMRPG i always thought was lower quality then papermario, thouhg i didnt play it so i dont see it through rose coler classes

Play a game before you rate it please. For example, Takamari no Damacy (sp?) is an interesting, innovative game, but I bet a lot of people dismiss it as childish or weird (well, it is weird, but in a cynical, fun kind of way).

*fencing salute* Touche. I just fail to see, aside from the wonderfully drawn world and incredible use of the Mario universe into an RPG, how it really set a standard. I think FF5 set a standard with the 'job' class, and FF6 with storyline, graphics, battle system, and esper abilities. SMRPG really just took what was there and had fun with it.

Don't get me wrong. I love the game.
