View Full Version : MMORPG Gender Survey
easilyamused

In my AP stat class we have to do surveys and analyze them in a whole bunch of different ways ><
Anyway, my project is to see how many people prefer to create their gender character, or a cross gender character. I mean like if you play an mmorpg do you choose a male or female avatar, regardless of how you behave. I don't want to know the specifics like if you pretend to be a girl in chat rooms or anything creepy stuff like that :p
Please answer truthfully as I don't want my data to be based on made up data.
Thanks for your help ^^

I always make my MMO character as close to myself as possible. IRL I'm short, hard to hit, and like stealth. So I always choose an elven thief.
There are benefits of creating a character of the opposite gender, but mostly it's eye candy. ;)

I play a guy character (I'm a guy), but I've known and played with people who go crossy. Mostly its for the extra attention and loot. Brian explained the attention female avatars get, and I know a guy who got some great weapons, just because he clicked the female toggle.

I always play a male in MMORPG's, I would probably play a female if there weren't such messed social connotations, I wouldn't want to have to go through all the hassle of explaining the fact that I'm a dude to every Joe Hardon who walked by, while at the same time I don't think I could bring myself to actually lie about my gender, breaking hearts really isn't my thing. I never assume a player is any gender based on their character, it really doesn't matter to me, I'm not looking for any Cyber watchamacallit, thats just weird. The sad fact is that there are hopelessly repressed uber nerds who aren't able to socialize properly outside of a false reality, and I don't want to burst their bubbles.

Brian explained the attention female avatars get, and I know a guy who got some great weapons, just because he clicked the female toggle.I've gone female before, just for that. Most of the time, however, I'd prefer to make an avatar that feels more like me, or, at least, doesn't get me all those goddamn cyber stares.
Besides, getting all the free stuff you get just by clicking the female toggle kind of ruins the game. It's only really acceptable if it's your second character and you've already gone through the grind once, and don't feel like going all the way through it again.

I have a tendency to play male characters, but since that preference isn't that great (not a crushing majority of male characters), and I've played a restricted number of MMORPG, I kind of hesitated in voting.

I have a tendency to play female characters and tell people that my beauty is too intimidating for men in real life, so I must channel my pent up sensuality into a video game. People get clingy when you say that, but the cash never stops rolling in.
I always make my MMO character as close to myself as possible.
Unfortunately I've yet to play a MMO with god as a class option.
Besides, getting all the free stuff you get just by clicking the female toggle kind of ruins the game.
You take that free stuff, and you like it. Only the weak have feelings.

I usually play male characters, but I've been known to use female characters one or twice. Y'know, just for variety.

I always play male, but I'm tempted to create a secondary female character just to beg and collect a loot that I would later transfer to my male character...
Oh, And it would give me a wonderful chance to yell "I HAVE A MANGINA, SUCKERS!" after scamming a few desperate teens.
I may do it just for the opportunity of yelling that in public.

Yeah, what he said. I like to make characters that feel like me, so I always make a male character. Everyonce in a while, I'll play a female, but more often than not, its because I have little choice in the matter. (Example: Mithra in FFXI)
I play female character's, just because I'd rather be looking at a girl's ass instead of a guys :p

I'm a guy and I play a guy. A big part of MMORPGs is the social community in the game. If I'm going to spend a lot of game time talking to real people, I find it a lot easier to act as myself (ie- I'm really crappy at acting, even when it's anonymously online). It's hard to act as yourself if everyone thinks you're the opposite gender.

so far survey says that 60% of female characters you run into will be male in real life. this fact amuses me.

I play female characters religiously, just because even if they're doing the same stuff guys are, they look better doing it and seem like they're kicking ass a little harder. Plus, looking at the backside of a hot girl allows me to play longer for obvious reasons.

And of all characters you meet, who are female in real life, 50% of them will be playing male characters.

Either there aren't many female members of NPF, or only the guys are stupid enough to vote...naw, it can't be.

I'm a female who plays female characters. I have played like, one or two males. But I get bored as males.. You get ignored a lot more and I can't flaunt myself for free stuff.
Plus, female characters are just so damn sexy.

I definitely play as a girl - or as a girl that plays just like a guy. Does that make sense? Gotta cut down on my machoness...

I'm male, and play only male characters. I can still stare at the hot female characters without having to make one myself, if I want. I also find that I can act a lot more naturally while RPing a member of my own gender, since I don't have the slightest idea of how a female mind works other than a few stereotypical character types.

Male, always male.
... unless there's a class like Lizardman, which usually means no gender. Lizardman > all.

Option #1.
I even made my mules male, though I guess it doesn't really matter since they just sit at home and occasionally make trips to the auction house.
Anyone here still playing FFXI? I moved to the Remora server back in September... Lemme know if you're on there.

what the hecks all this mangina stuff about? You guys are weird.
Remember that scene in Silence of the Lams when "Wild Bill" tucks his penis between his legs, and hops around pretending his pubic hair is covering his vagina?
That's a mangina maneuver.
Rumoured to be popular with trasvestites or shemales that want to surprise/scare their partners when they are about to have sex.

I am, but I'm under the Asura server. Sorry.
To answer the survey, I'm male playing male. I don't need to "impress" male characters to actually accomplish something in a game. You can always ask politely and get ten thousand Gil from a noble soul, make friends there, and prove yourself useful and helpful. :)

I usually play female characters when I'm first getting used to any game. Even fighting games and that, I will usually choose a female character to start off. Plus, I'm a butt-kickin' girl myself so I like to play them ^_^ Eventually I'll get around to playing a male character if I grow to like the game.
As for Diablo II, I usually play Assassins...once again with the butt-kicking female :P

I've noticed a lack of "I don't play MMORPGs."
I don't know what I'd do if I did. Are there usually stat differences/boosts based upon gender of character? Or is it purely personal preference?
In other video games, the female characters are the ones I find to be more diverse and often "stronger" than their male counterparts. For the most part, anyway. But that might just be my bias.

I've never played a MMORPG. Gasp! I once read that the average EQ player (including inactive acounts) put in over 30 hours a week into the game. I have 2 jobs. I can't afford a third one that doesn't pay (in fact, you have to pay to play a game you already bought).
I think I would play as a female character. That's what I did in Morrowind for my first game. Looking at women is always nice, but I'd play a female just because it's a change of pace. The video games I grew up with were completely male dominated. How many sword wielding guys- usually with radical hair- can you play as before it becomes old hat?

I play both guys and girls. I like playing girls, 'cause they just look better and have an easier time (All of the male Paladins seem to want to come to my aid. Chivalry is a class trait?), but I play males too. Usually when the females look totally retarded, and I will use for example any female horde from World of Warcraft. But I have two alliance characters that are female, and on that is male, so I guess I'm two to one for the females. And I would also agree wholeheartilly that it is easier to roleplay the gender that you are, especially when you're in a guild that talks out of game, and uses teamspeak/ventrillo.
I just find it sad that females really do have a much easier time finding groups and making friends than male characters... But... oh well I guess.
