Whoever invented the grade point average system is going to die by my bare hands. And if he/she is already dead, which I'm sure is the case, I'm going to dig up their rotting, diseased worm-filled body, and do something really, really..................bad to it.

Sorry, I couldn't think of anything clever to say.

Besides the fact that people put way too much stock it, there are schools out there that use weighted averages to give people grades like 4.6 and 5.0. It's not that I mind this at all, because I support this idea. What bothers me is that my grades from high school (unweighted) look crappy compared to someone with a 4.8.

"Oh, you got a B in AP U.S. History. That's nice. It really should be an A in the unweighted scale, but we like to screw our students UP THE ASS. Sucks to be you."

I never liked GPA either, probably because everyone else's was always higher than mine. I still think it serves some sort of purpose, although I'm yet to figure out what that purpose is exactly. I do think people who go above and beyond are entitled to some kind of advantage over the competition to get into colleges, but I don't want it getting ridiculous (i.e. recieving a 5.0).

Actually, I was going to start a discussion thread on something similar to this when I saw this article (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/latimests/20050227/ts_latimes/highschoolsare10ina50worldgatessays) about Bill Gates bashing U.S. high schools. I agreed with most of what he said.

Actually, it wouldn't matter since colleges ask for your GPA weighted and unweighted.

But yeah, my highschool pisses me off because they don't weight GPAs. I could easily be in the top ten of my class (of 350) if not for unweighted GPAs giving people who didn't take all AP classes last year an advantage. "But we don't want to treat anyone unequally." Retard, everyone isn't equal and gym is not equal to US History AP. Don't act like it.

My school doesn't want to institute it because of parents who will bitch about their kids ranks going down, and because they have trouble coming up with a system. Bullshit, I'll give you one that works off the top of my head: Regular classes are out of 4, honors out of 5, and AP out of 6. If I get a B in Chem AP and an A in gym, thats (5+4)/2, my GPA is 4.5. Done.

The main purpose of GPAs is what I said above: To give rankings more credability.

Your college gets a round of applause from me. The school I went to last year couldn't give a thought less to it, and as for the one I'm at right now, it only wants money. I don't ever remember being asked if my GPA was weighted or not. Bob? Did they ever ask you?

Please continue this in PM or over AIM or something. This is the discussion forum, not the rant forum.
