well this SATurday is the day when the NEW SAT will be first administered. im obviously taking it otherwise i wouldnt give a shit about it and wouldnt make a topic. but i was wondering what your take on this new SAT is?

for me...i wish they coulda waited one more year before giving the new one cause then i wouldnt have to take it. but i do. and its harder. it has a writing portion to it. not only that but the Math section requires you to know Algebra 2 as well. (what about those students who are taking it but didnt take Algebra 2 yet? how are they supposed to do well?)

anyways. not all the changes were bad. one good change is that the test will now be out of 2400 instead of 1600. and the english will no longer have the analogy section which everyone destested so.

i scored a 1170 on the old test (second time too) and im hoping to get the equivelent of a 1300 on this test because of scholarships so heres the second official question...any suggestions on what to do to get a better score? you know like what to eat and stuff.

If I understand what they've said about the new SAT, it seems there will be more sections (like the essay section, and the algebra 2 section) but each section will have less questions so on one hand it's bad because you have to be ready with a greater range of things, but also if you screw up one section, it's smaller and won't make as much of a dent in your grade. (unless I'm confusing this with the new ACT)

This will be my first year taking the SAT and the ACT, so I hope I'll do well. The only advice I can think of (and I haven't taken the tests yet, so I don't really know what I'm talking about) is just get a lot of sleep the night before and don't pig out of junk food. Stuff like that.

Well you supossed to eat protein, so nuts, meat, stuff with protein in it. And sleep. Those are the easy part. Then there the evil part... STUDYING
:rmage: Dun dun dun
:bmage: STOP IT!

Sorry I had to. The devil made me do it. Black Made made me do it.
Anyways ya I got nothing else to offer you.

Edit: I forgot to say I haven't taken them either.

Good thing the SATs are long gone for me. And I actually like taking standardized tests, it's just that having the essays here just doesn't seem right for a test like this.

As for me - 1180. I was content with my mediocrety and didn't bother to take it a second time since I was (and am currently) going to a state school. (I certainly could have done better since I took the test without studying, staying up late gambling the night before, and had a powerful coughing fit in the middle of a reading comprehension section, successfully shattering my concentration for the rest of the test.)

Eh, I never took the SAT's. I took the ACT twice, and thoroughly kicked it's ass.

I will laugh at all of you who have to take the new ones though. Because I can.

Ha.

My most important peice of advice is go to the bathroom before leaving your house! It's important.

My advice: Remember your calculator. It's very important. I'm sure that if I had had a calculator when I took the ACT I could have gotten higher than 28, but that is beside the point. Other than the calculator bit, stay up late playing video games and watching tv, pig out on junk food and drink plenty of Dew the day before, and of, the test. I did this and got a 1420 on the SAT. This advice should serve you well.

So, they DID make a new one! yeah, it's still a waste. All that dumb standardized testing doesn't prove a whole hell of a lot. Particularly in the reading comprehension. 'cause if you don't pick the answer they like the most, you fail. Or don't do as well.

I say they can partake in giving me fellatio while I burn thousands of their tests with a flame thrower. (No, seriously, I'm not joking!)

But if you want any advice, shadows, then one of the best things to do is just relax. Most people I know got all jittery and didn't get any sleep or anything, and they fucked up. Me, on the other hand...I coulda slept through the entire thing 'cause it was so boring. Har har. I say this: find what routine makes you feel the most comfortable and relaxed, and be sure to adhere to that the day before.

What? You're upset about them adding a writing portion, and Algebra 2?

For one, writing skills are in high demand. College professors and employers are looking for anyone that can actually string together a coherent sentence. After all, in the real world, you can't' make a living by answering multiple choice tests. So, it's mean for them to force you to develop skills you'll only not need if your job involves the phrase, "Do you want fries with that?"

Secondly, Algebra 2? Last time I checked, that was sophmore level math. Most people who take the SATs are either late juniors or early seniors. So you would likely already have experience in it. Besides, from what I remember of Alg 2, it's mostly matrices and really simple algebra. Simple, compared to calculus and the like.

yea i took Alg 2 in sophomore year too. but thing is that not everyone is lucky enough to get into that all important Alg1 class in 8th grade unless they double up in freshman year. then you also have to think about those people that are really smart but just cant do squat about math and are put into the lower level maths aka Math tech.

Bah. They're adding a writing thing to the ACT too... and I'll have to take it. I've taken the normal one before...forgot to study...and got a 27. One away from a 28, and if I had gotten that, I wouldn't have had to take it agian (via deal with my parents). Of course, now I know I would've had to have taken it agian anyway.... so I'm not quite as upset.

Ah, yess, because everyone who takes it is worried about developing skills. :P No, we just want to get it over with, and so you can see why adding something that will make it even more boring and take even longer is going to make us go into hissy fits. Yess, I see why they did it, but I don't really care.

Meh, the writing section doesn't make Us that uneasy. Our English teacher this year has been raping us with stupid essay assignments. We could write a ten-page thesis on why dogs should be allowed to control the remote if its needed. Remember folks, BS is your friend, and large sentences show that you have some command over the language as long as they're understandable.

Also, a somewhat cautionaryword from Mr. Terry Pratctett
"Of course, it is very important to be sober when you take an exam. Many worthwhile careers in the street-cleaning, fruit-picking and subway-guitar-playing industries have been founded on a lack of understanding of this simple fact."

Incidentely, I'm taking the SATs tomorrow. I forget if it's the last test with the last SATs or the first of the new, but I'm not concerned either way. I can BS efficiently if needed.

I personally like the idea of adding an essay section, it makes the test slightly less like your typical standardized test*. It does better in accessing an individual's own skills, as opposed to those silly analogies.

The addition of Algebra II is in my opinion a double edged sword. I think it's a good idea that they want to test out all the math skill we are supposed to learn in high school, but at least in my school, Algebra II is a Junior year course. This obviously doesn't bode well for those still taking Algebra II at the time they would be taking the test or those who's strength is not in math.**

I do agree with the fact that the reading comprehension section could use some improvement. Having to pick 'the best answer' or the one they agree with always has struck me as odd. I generally do quite well on these sections but the ones I do get incorrect seem so far out there, or alternately so synonomous with my answer I don't see why both answers where avaliable.

*I'll bet you thought I was going to say standard standardized tests, now didn't you?

**I might be just a little biased, as per the fact struggle in mathematics just to get a C in most classes. Though, I go to a private school so on a standard public school scale I think it's a C+/B-.

So, the aftermath.

What essay question did ya'll get? We got something along the lines of "Is something run by the vote of majority fair or not?", which is freaky because We've spent all year reading The Fountainhead in class (ya know, individualism ahoy) and We decided to read Wikiquote's section on Terry Pratchett and got to use a quote of Pterry (namely, "The intelligence of a crowd is the square root of the number or members").

All-in-all, not too bad We think. Not as bad as all the bellyaching alluded too.

Your thoughts?

OMG...i got the EXACT same essay question...and wrote about a cow...yea we know where i landed on the scale of 1-6 dont we.... anyways...when you get your scores how about we all just post em here alright?

I got a question about if people are responcible for their behavior or if society is or something like that

P-Sleazy
03-13-2005, 04:44 PM
yea thats anotherthing i wanted to adress but forgot too. if you remember any questions that really bothered you on the sat then ask em here. pretty sure someone else here got the answer to that question.

by the way Death By Stabbing...the essays arent really about content their more about form and stuff. like they want to see that you know how to write an essay and form it and keep on topic. so you could have bs your whole way through it as long as you stayed on topic and pretty much did the essay format correctly. thats why i wrote about a cow...and congress...and supreme court...all in one essay... :fighter:

I hope your luck was good. I took the original SAT for the last time in December, along with my first ACT. Got 1570 and 32, respectively, so I was quite happy. Now, this new crap? I'm just glad I don't have to take it, because I'd get handily schooled by the writing portion. Handily.

Essay portions of tests generally screw me over, I need to think about what I'm writing for a decent amount of time before writing it. So glad I'm already done with all those.

What about the scores of those who have already taken it? I wonder if they'd be given the same worth as a score on this new test.

the scores gonna be out of 2400 instead of 1600 hundred this time around.
anywho just found out that our scores will be released on April 11th on Collegeboard.com so someone be prepared to resurrect this thread on the 11th with a score in hand.

Just remember what they said in Van Wilder. "Remember to take a pre-game dump.." Wouldn't want that to creep up on you during the writing section or something. My suggestion is study early and party late. Get NO MORE than 8 hours of sleep. MY Political Science teacher has a formula for doing well on tests. He says, "Any studying done after 6 PM the night before is pointless," he goes on with a list of things that you should do at least 1 of instead.(I suggest more than 1 LOL) "Have Sex, Get Stoned, Read a Holy Book, or go to sleep" My suggestion is to get up no more than 30 minutes before you have to leave, eat breakfast that doesn't contain lots of sugar and get caffeinated, especially if you study a lot on caffeine, its called state dependant learning. You are more likely to remember things if you are in the same mental state you were in at the time of the learning. I didn't study, forgot my trig, didn't get a lot of sleep, and had a small breakfast and I got a 29 on the ACT. Remember a calculator, (the SAT has more calc restricitons than the ACT) and maintain a calm mental state. If you start working yourself up you become more likely to second guess your right answers or forget stuff you know.
Good Luck!

Any advice regarding?

P-Sleazy
03-21-2005, 03:33 PM
theres a secondary school one?
anyways i would think that all these would still apply to it especially the go have sex the night before. lets just hope we forumites can find a girl/boy of the opposite gender to have sex with the night before...without having to pay them of course. but thats still 3-4 years away for me and im not planning on doing any more schooling after 4 year college.

I took a practice one from an independent company using old Math/Verbal sections with the new Writing section added in, and scored a 2250.

If it had been on the old two-part SAT, it would have been a 1550. The damn essay screwed me over.

I took it the 12th, didn't think it was terribly difficult. My essay question was about whether creativity is need in our society. Anyone else get that one?

I missed the chance to take the SAT this year (no matter though. It would just be for practice anyway). I remember I took the SAT about 2 years ago and scored a 1040. Pretty damn good for a 7th grader. And I didn't study for it either. :P

This essay question stuff seemed whack at first, but from reading this thread I'm a little more sure about it. I'm a great writer, but I hate writing stuff on the fly like that. I guess I'll get the chance to try it out next year.

dude...theres another SAT in April and again in June...they do one like every month so if you still want to take it this year be sure to sign up for em. i think the deadline for the april one is extremely close to closing probably better off to sign up for the June one.

well enough of that rant.

I DO despise the new essay section. Don't get me wrong, I love writing, but not when I get scrutinized on how my 14th paragraph topic statement links in with the sentence following my thesis, which must contain a summary of the following... bleh...

I got a 2060 on the "new PSAT." I'm pretty sure that was the highest score in the school for a sophomore. Little more studying and I should do fine on the next ones, I hope.

And i received a loathsome 1520. That makes me stupid. Now i'm going to have to take the classes. O'd to freakin' joy.

And they always make you writee about insignifigant things such as: What would a flee do if it was trapped under a rock?

But the best is when they give you those 'write about the picture' essays. Those are just hilarious.

I didn't even take the old SAT. I took the ACT.

Got a 29. So I didn't have to take the SATs.

In case you're wondering, 29 is a really, really good score.

I took the original SAT, and did good enough on it and I am interested in seeing what the new one is like. The new one was created to solve some of the "problems" that people say in the old one. Like being able to take classes to get better scores, or that the tests seemed "racist", i think a study showed that asian and white people typically did better then others. The new test didn't really solve any of these problems, I think that it made it so that taking an SAT prep class helped you more, and adding harder parts, like Alg 2 (even though this may seem easy to some of us) and an essay, only reinforce the differences in schooling that people are able to get, so they do worse on the harder protions.
