Well, apart from the Baldur's gate series, the Icewind Dale series, Planescape Torment, the Baldur's Gate series, the Baldur's Gate series again, and Planescape Torment, a couple of good ones are the Icewind Dale series and the Baldur's gate series. Oh, and Planescape Torment too.

(BTW: Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance for the console is -not- good, only the PC games are)

The Fallout Series (sci-fi) are supposed to be good, though I haven't played them, and you could try Temple of Elemental Evil, though it isn't to everyone's liking. If I were you, I'd start with Baldur's Gate I, my first RPG game (reminisce)!

Just my thoughts,
Mikorlias Zard

Morrowind is a great game, especially if you want to try to make some of your own content. Only draw back is that you either have to have an X-Box (which means no custom stuff) or a pretty good computer in order to play it. To tell you the truth, I've spent much more time in the editor than actually playing the game itself (unless you count time spent testing my mod as playing the game, then it's about even I guess).

If you can find a copy of them, try out Breath of Fire 3 and 4. I liked 3 more than 4 because the dragon transformation system was better, plus I liked the fishing in that one more than in 4. Story-wise, they're about equal, as with characters. The man hero, like in many console RPGs, doesn't talk at all during the game. Still, they're fun games with a few really fun mini-games that you can profit from (you get the ultimate armor in both games via fishing) if you don't feel like leveling or going on in the story. They're both for the Playstation.

Dark Cloud 2 is a fun one as well. There are tons of little things you can do, from building villages to playing a golfing-like games after you've cleared the dungeon of monsters to fishing (yes, I love fishing mini-games in RPGs). The combat system itself is pretty good. You could say that it's Zelda-ish. The characters themselves don't gain levels, but instead their weapons gain exp and transform into more powerful weapons. The story itself is pretty meh, and the voice acting isn't superb (then again, it rarely is when dealing with games), but if you can look past those two flaws, you can find a great game in there. It's also a bit "kiddy" looking, but I kinda like it as it reminds me of an old cartoon or something. It's for the PS2.

I played Dark Cloud 2 for a little bit, but just ended up getting bored with it. With is really sad cause I hardly ever get bored with RPGs. :(

I got bored with it after the seventh dungeon and both of Max's and both of Whatshername's weapons were maxed out (and I damn the creators of that game for making her ultimate sword look like a giant banana with a pinwheel on it, when it looked friggin awesome as Dark Excalibur and almost as cool as Griffon Wing) and I had gotten medals from most of the fishing and Spheda stuff. I never tried raising fish and doing the racing thing, because the prizes were rarely ever worth getting in the first place. And, of course, the story started to seriously suck, so there was no motivation for me to see what happens at the end.

The Chrono series (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Radical Dreamers, and the possible sequel to come Chrono Break) are always amazing. The storyline is thought provoking and you still have fun killing things. And the music from Chrono Cross is great to listen to when your not playing video games. The only problem is that it's kinda hard to find copies of the games, especially Radical Dreamers since it was only released in Japan.

Chrono Trigger and Earthbound are great games to pick up for your emulator.

for the playstation look for Front Mission 3 (a very different type of rpg), or Chrono Cross.

for the PC: Baulder's Gate II, Fallout 2, or System Shock 2 (if you can find it)

Oh, I didn't see Arcanum before! I really liked that game. I played as a Dwarf inventor who specialized in guns and lock picking, and dabbled in medicine and machines. I forgot if he did anything else. It was pretty hard at first, being of the special description where I critically fail a lot but gain more exp per kill, but then I figured out how to steal from stores really easily and it became really easy after that. All you needed was to be able to pick locks (I think you have to pick the lock on the container which stores the merchant's goods) and you can steal from just about any store you want to. Since the only really bad thing about being an inventor is how much it costs to be one, it made the game pretty easy.

Try also Grandia 2(PS2 and DC). average graphics and painfully ununteresting storyline, but one of the most innovative battle systems on this earth. and for GBA, the recently released Fire Emblem.
O yeah, and try out Okage if your into crazy, insane totally cool storylines.

Just about any SNES rpg is really good, but I particularly liked Tales of Phantasia, and there is a sequel or something on PSX as well. Also, Lufia 2 was pretty good although a bit short for me :P!

I love the Chrono Series.
I knew they were possiably coming out with another Chrono game. Do you have any more info on it?
Chrono Break, what a cool name.

I wish I had a copy of Radical Dreamers. I have the japanese ROM, but I don't speak Japanese.... yet. but, yeah: Chrono games are excellent, and are good, if not better than FF.

I also really enjoyed the Grandia games, as well as Lunar.

noooonononononono. You people completly overlooked one that I like. It's not multiplayer and/or online, but it's my favorite game of all time.

Breath of Fire III. aww man I love that one.

Free cheapo online ones that have no storyline would be Runescape (www.runescape.com) or RWK (www.racewarkingdoms.com)

Fair warning, none of those games are nice to newcomers. In fact RWK should not be played unless you have the $250 for all templanes (like worlds) and the wand of teleportation. I'd bet you don't have 250 do ya.

If you actually want to roleplay, you should probably be playing pen and paper games anyway. Sorry, but I don't think that endlessly hunting down "mobs" counts as roleplaying.

As a stern Fallout fan, I cannot recrommend this series enough. On average, you can pick it up from a Wal-mart for about 9 bucks. It came at a time when RPGs outside of pen-and-paper games were fixed solely in the realm of consoles, like the Final Fantasy series. Fallout was good enough that it managed to kick-start a rebirth in PC RPGs.

EverCrack may be a bad idea, but you can't possibly go wrong with Fallout. Get it NOW if you don't already.

Here's the thread for me. Good RPG's NOT Final Fantasy.

-Suikoden Series (I-III) are very different from conventional RPGs if you're looking for that. I Love them because I submit to Konami and because I love originality. Has 3 different types of gameplay as well, 1 vs 1, 6 person parties and Army Warfare.
-Chrono Trigger/Cross as a pair is one of the best series in gaming in my opinion. Chrono Trigger = My Favorite RPG so far. Characters combine spells to make more powerful double and triple Techs (Square is FINALLY doing this again with FFTactics Advance and FFX-2....took them 10 years).
-Xenogears and the XenoSaga series are made by the people who did Chrono Trigger/Cross. I have yet to play them but some people say they are the best RPGs ever made. And yes I'll be getting to them.
-Baiten Chaos is a GameCube RPG being developed by the Monotith team (the people who did the Chrono Series again) and Its looking quite....interesting to say the least. We'll see what happens.
-Pokemon Sapphire I can vouch for is very fun and addicting. Standard Pokemon Formula...with 100 times more to do.
-Fire Emblem Series only has 1 game in America so far but I've played 3 of them and they are VERY fun. I would highly suggest the GBA one they finally brought over (its a prequel to all the others made of which there are 8). Strategy based Army Warfare (like Advance Wars...).
-Advance Wars is very fun, like Fire Emblem. But its about using modern armies over old world type armies with swords, lances and magic like Fire Emblem. Same company though. Definitly a good series.
-Castlevania has been making many Action/Adventure/RPG hybrids and...well....its one of my favorite game series ever made. Get Symphony of the Night and follow it up with the three GBA Castlevania games. You'll never think of RPGs the same (nor games like Metroid ;) ).
-Uh...Zelda? Some don't think its an RPG...but it is. Any Zeldais good. If you must, get the Zelda Bonus Disk coming out soon with Zelda I-II, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on it. Some of the best games ever made (some would say the best) on one disk for GameCube.
-Tales, as in the Tales series is sappose to be thethird most successful series in Japanese history. I've only played Tales of Phantasia but I LIKE! Tales of Destiny 1 and 2 are sappose to be over here and they are soon to be releasing 'Tales of Symphonia' for GameCube....I WANT! Check it out if you want.
-Dragon Warrior....never played except #1 and #4. Didn't like either one, but the newer ones look very promising and I plan to check them out. The latest Dragon Warrior has been worked on for 2 years and is using the same Cel Shaded technology as the afore mentioned Tales of Symphonia, but its on GC. These were made by Enix and are the most successful RPGs in Japanese history, Dragon Warrior VII being the best selling game in Japans history.
-Seiken Desetsu, known in America as the 'Secret' series has 5 games to its name, three of which are in America: 'Sword of Mana', 'Secret of Mana' and 'Legend of Mana'. I've played Secret and Legend of Mana, along with Secret of Mana's sequel which never made it over here. They are all good and I quite recommend. The best is Seiken Densetsu three though (the game that never made it over here. Rivals Chrono Trigger in graphics and character based story, although the game system is completly different.

I can't remember anymore at the moment but that's enough...my back is tired from sitting up and typing all this. Time to go laze on my bed and watch a mooovie.

Grrr... I REALLY need to play Fallout and Fallout 2! I've been meaning to play them for so long, but have always forgotten while looking at the new, shiny games that are coming out... Well, there's always Summer. Oh, and I've got FFXI. It's pretty fun so far. I hate how the fishing isn't a real mini-game, but it's alright... Okay, it's horrible just like in Runescape...

Click, click, click... Hey, I got a fish! ... Click, click, click...

Runescape is the perfect example of what happens when a bunch of lazy people with *no* programing skillz smoke *way* to much crack, put a half-assed beta-game on the net, and dupe a bunch of moronic 13-year-old fanboy's into conning their parents for money to play.

Castle of the Winds, now. *That's* a game that manages to be fun despite bad graphics and repetative gameplay. :)

Has anyone mentioned skies of Arcadia yet? that sucker was so good it fooled me into thinking i liked RPGs. I'm talking about the dreamcast version here, i haven't played it on Game Cube (although i hear its largly the same). Man that game had everything. Characters you loved, a male lead who didn't get involved in a retarded love triangle with the two female characters, and soild combat system. Plus all the other goodies that everyone lists about their favorite RPG. It was the greatest.

I disbelieve! The best deal possible is buying the Baldurs Gate: The Original Saga pack (BGI *and* it's expansion) and the Baldur's Gate: Shadows Pack (BGII *and* it's expansion) for a total, combined price of around 30 bucks.

2 of the sweetest RPG's ever, with thier expansions, for 30 damn dollars. That's less than I paid for BGII by itself!

Kieran Dineer
11-19-2003, 07:23 PM
I already HAVE all of the BGs and have beaten them multiple times. And while I have Planescape as well, I can't pass up the ability to get a good game for $10. Oh, and I completely forgot to add in Suikoden 1, 2, and 3 with the great RPGs to play. I loved all three.

Patricoo

woh woh woh. Runescape is very well done. Yes it is extreamly basic, and they recently the MAULED that mining system. (in fact mining, once the main way to earn cash, is now barely worth even doing for petty change.) Plus I won't play runescape anymore because they unjustly banned my charactor. Furthermore the graphics and concept is very basic.

HOWEVER, it is a very nice game to play. Often you get alot of asses on the free server. The golden rule is never to trust charactors under level 10. As long as you don't go around giving free crap and getting lured into the wilderness (where you can be attacked) people are fairly nice. The gameplay is great and although it has no sound, putting a CD on while your playing really helps.

While I'm reccomending it to only DESPRATE people for a free online game, It's fairly easy going with noobs thanks to the tutorial island. Plus the members server, while 60 times better, is not required to have fun. Try it. (www.runescape.com)

**I listen to the FF5/6 Soundtrack CD. Fitting to the game.

I can't believe how many people are totally ignoring some of the great sega RPGS

Phantasy Star 1 - Sega Master System
Phantasy Star 2 - Genesis
Skip 3 it kinda sucks, but it is for the genesis as well
Phantasy Star 4 - Genesis (I call this the FF3(6) of the sega world)

And yes the series was out there before they tacked online to the end of it.

also Shining force 1 and 2 for the genesis
Shining forice Cd for the Sega CD
Shining force 3 is for the Saturn but I never got to play it yet.

I suggest you all play these as most of them you can find easily on the net and all work with their perspective emulators (cept maybe SF3 as Saturn emulation isn't near perfect yet)

You forgot Lunar 2: Eternal Blue.
I support Xenogears, crono trigger, planscape, fallout 1, fallout 2, final fantasy tactics. The other final fantasy games are pretty good too, but watch out in the later games because being a high level is actually worse then being a low level (ex. ff8).

Suikoden (any of them) are great games. 1 or 2 are hard to find, though...
Also, the Star Ocean Games are awesome (2 is in US right now).

Also, look for castle of the winds, JuggyFWB mentioned it earlier; It's an old game and can probably be downloaded for free. (still great, though)

Hey, a good, and overlooked, PSX RPG is Thousand Arms. It's really interesting, as it has a dating sim combined into it (you need to date girls to get new spells and skills), and the story is fairly decent as well. I had a lot of fun playing it.

I don't know if anyone will count it, but the Harvest Moon series is pretty good. It's not your average RPG, you don't fight anything or get cool techniques. But you do get experience in your tools, the ability to upgrade them and a lot of more "quiet" quests. And the ability to get married is pretty interesting.

Say Just John, I believe that would be a crossbreed of a strategy and a sim-game. Sound rather amusing, but I don't think that's a RPG. I might be wrong though, I've never heard of the game...

My vote:
Fallout(PC), Fallout 2(PC), Harvest Moon(PSX), Star Ocean(PSX), and Valkyrie Profile(PSX), Phantasy Star 2/3/4(Sega), Chrono Trigger(SNES), Tales of Phantasia(SNES), Zelda(any and all systems), Ultima 4(NES), and Might and Magic 7(PC)

Can't believe im the first to mention Valkyrie Profile, the combat alone is enough to play the game through; but the story rules too.

Ultima 4(NES)

No! Don't recommend that butchered version. If it's got to be a console version of U4, then at least it should be the Sega Master System version. Being twice the size it's a near perfect port, instead of the hacked down NES version, and even sports an improvement or two over the computer versions.

And if the NES version is the only one you've played, you aught to check out the SMS version. Easy to emulate is the SMS, and then you can see what you've been missing.

PS. If you like Ultima IV then you must absolutely try out Ultima V. And then the rest of them, and after that Gothic. Gothic is somewhat of a spiritual successor and it's really great even with the annoying controls and all.

I have to agree on Arcanum and Planescape. I didn't like Fallout 2 much, though (haven't played 1); I think it just started off so poorly that I could never get into it far enough to find anything I liked. Fallout Tactics was kinda fun, though.
It does kind of seem like there's been a void of single player computer rpgs. Most rpgs have either moved to the console, or are mmorpgs, neither of which I'm too interested in.

Oh, and Castle of the Winds was great, too. It's too bad Epic only makes FPSs nowadays.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention the Quest for Glory games. Great series of games with an interesting and unique combat system (at least, the first 3 games had a good combat system; the system in the fourth one was fighting game like and kinda okay, the system in the fifth was barely a combat system). Kinda old, though. Basically, the Quest for Glory games were like King's Quest or Monkey Island with combat, but in a different way that KQ8 was.

The Aging Fallout series is amazing. In terms of Character customization its rather plain, but the sheer amount of stuff you can do is insane. Plant dynamite on old men, Lay waste to an entire town with a flamethrower and assault rifle, murder your wife and leave her in the desert (then shoot your ex-father-in-law in the nuts) Be the shining savior of the wastes, or the vile plague of the land. Monsterously entertaining.

Icewind Dale was awesome, but God i reached this forest place and got stuck. Still great nonetheless.

Baldur's Gate 2 was great too, a little overwhelming, but great character development.

Outside FF, the best SNES RPGs are Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, and Ogrebattle (if you can call it an RPG)

I didn't like Chrono cross at all. The battle system was too complex for menial things like gaining levels, and there were waaaaay to many player characters for there to be enough character development beyond the few primary characters.

I tried Xenosaga, but man, a game where you spend more time watching cutscenes than actually playing? I couldn't stay focused on it. And when It comes to RPGs I am usually good.

DW7, if you can get by the most mindrendingly bad Graphics and annoying Music ever, then you are looking at a Marvelous game.

Everquest is the worst game you'll ever get addicted to. Its great fun but man, has NONE of the elements that make a good game.

All very good games listed. I personally enjoy rouge games for the PC, good old fashion ASCII games. My favorite, that is still being updated periodically is ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery). It's one of the most addictive, non-multiplayer, indepth, rpgs I know of... and it's run in DOS... using character symbols to represent you and the environment. Yeah... it sounds pathetic, but you'd be surprised how quickly you learn to hate the letter "j" screw those damn "j"s...

If you're interested here's the webpage where you can download it (for free).

I recommend this game to anyone who has the patience to learn how to play it... and its difficulty.

I can think of a couple of older games that you could try. those being Illision of gaia, and secret of evermore. Both of these games are for the snes. they are both fairly difficult to find so i wouldn't recommend looking too hard for them but if you come across them scoop them up quickly. both games have an intriquing storyline and an intresting battle system.

I can only contribute two things to this thread. The first is that I don't know why is Morrowind: Elder Scrolls so touted as being so great. It has good things like being able to enchant your own armor/weapons/clothing with the spells YOU have (or pay someone to do it), you actually earn a house which you can upgrade to a mansion (well, in the game...I wouldn't consider a walled settlement, with three hobo houses that have no function other than look pretty and that goes too for the guard tower, a mansion). The quests are so-so, you spend WAY too much time walking (Even thought there are some transport services and two-way teleport spells) and I absolutely HATE the graphics. They are horrendous (geez those characters models and textures look like graphics from Duke3D (they are THAT ugly), water looks as if they pasted the same texture for the sky in all bodies of water, and visual effects are unimpressive). The plot is long winded but interesting. This game will take you a long time to finish completely and lets not go to min-maxing please. The second thing I will contribute is this: BUY KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC NOW. A solid, well-stablished universe (Star Wars) + time-proven game mechanics (D&D for Star Wars) + beautiful graphics (although all human girls in the game NEED TO GET FUCKING BRACES (or reins for their HORSE teeth)) + good sound (the beauty of a two Jedi swordfight reminds you of the Obi-Wan vs Vader duel) = Good RPG.

I didn't mean to sound fellating but this is the first game I have enjoyed in two years.
