View Full Version : New Personalities for black belt

Since the biggest problem for Black Belt's ressurection is the belief that his personality is too close to fighters, here's a thread about modifying the character that his past activities make sense (or a neat retcon that he was actually under some curse or whatnot) to make him a viable a source for humor as any other cast member.

Please note, most of these will suck....

1. My suggested personality for Black belt is his near death experinece has given him a Buddah like awareness of the fact that he's in a comic and video game. This experience has also encouraged him to basically try to pander to the audience

*Black Belt with video camera*

"Okay BM, get close to fighter. It's time to make some Yaoi."

2. Black Belt is for all intents and purposes Kevin Bacon and has visited every other video game world in history.

3. Since Red Mage DOESN't have father issues. It might be just horrible-amusing enough that Black Belt has a tendency to drone on about his home life (since its how he got into martial arts) and we realize along with the others how horribly he's been misused.

"Oh I got involved in the martial arts after my parents were killed horribly by some wandering guy in a big straw hat and blue robes."
"Uhhh...when was this?"
"Oh last month."

4. Black Belt is Red Onion Kid mysteriously thrown back in time by Sarda.

5. Black Belt IS Sarda!

(Actually that'd be pretty damn cool)

The biggest problem for Black Belt's ressurection is that he's dead.

That does tend to be a considerable issue in mortality-related actions. :)

Willowhugger, Brian has stated on at least one occasion that :bbelt:'s death is permanent. It's part of the grand story and cannot be changed. There are no Dragonballs here. People stay dead, except in EXTREMELY rare situations. Like when they become the King of Hell.

I liked Black Belt, although his personality was a lot like fighters, I missed the whole "loosing" things.

Like how he got lost going to the bathroom, like how he 'lost' the Monopoly game when he landed on White Mage's Elfland with 3 Hotels, and then made the game set and board 'lost'.

You do realise that it's a prerequisite, having to be dead in order to be ressurected, right?

But 'Kurosen' *cough*BRIAN*COUGH* is right. he's dead, he is gone, he's no coming back.

Good lord, I hated tha about DBZ. "Oh look! It's a big dramatic death scene, but don't worry, the 5 or so episodes this death scene took will all be for nothng seeing as how we'll just revive suchandsuch later!"

Uhg, the dead should stay dead. Watch FMA for a good example of this.

You forgot,

He's effing snuffed it!

That's my favorite part from the Monty Python skit, at least from the version I've got - which was recorded from a live performance.

Please stay on the badly devised topic. The only way BB would come back is if it is somehow sensless or funny, but it won't happen. Especially considering that WM is god(ess) and Sarda even had a chance to bring him back.

Paper Ninja
04-28-2005, 07:50 PM
Yeah, what ever happened to that plotline?

PyrosNine

We'll probably hear about it sooner or later, and it'll be tragic or something.

Paper Ninja
04-28-2005, 07:56 PM
Well, if it involves Sarda, It's tragic for the LW
If it involves WM, it's tragic for WM...and perhaps BM

I think that White Mage will suddenly realize that all her hard work went to nothing... then the LW do something and reality shifts.

That, or Sarda pulls a Sarda.

I know what it is. And I find the concept of Fighter-on-BM action at once a comedy gold-mine and highly disturbing and frightening. I mean, the sheer number of sword, knife, and Hadoken euphamisms alone...

And I pray to whatever supreme being there is that 8BT never starts using DBZ-level ressurections. If he stays dead, Black Belt's death actually has the potential to mean something. Like confirmation that in RPG Worlds, there is a difference between "plot dead" and "battle dead".

Wouldn't be the first time (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=041230) , hopefully not the last. I'm starting to think this is getting off topic, oh well. BB is dead and always will be, let him rest in peace, he already has a hard enough time finding the afterlife as it is.

Willowhugger
04-28-2005, 09:44 PM
I'm less of the mind.

There's no poignance to Black Belt's death because Black Belt is an idiot who died on White Mage's order and we'll never see her feel any guilt for that or reprocussions because the world is nonsensical.

Even in RPGworld, death isn't permanent because that's the way the story works.

I just don't see why Black Belt staying dead helps and I'd like to see if nothing else in this thread...

What people would think would be good jokes IF Black Belt returned.

It would irk a lot of people so much that it spoils every joke that could be made.

I think BB's death is actually important for WM's character. The guilt she feels for recklessly sending BB in against Kary is bound to shape her character in a nice, dramatic manner by the end of the comic.

It's almost like Brian is a writer who knows what he's doing....O.o;;

He's dead, not unlike leaves that fall from trees in autumn. Better looking in death. ;)

Who cares?

She's still a self-righteous git.

Whether she changes or not is ultimately unimportant since we all end up back at the status quo.

Look at the other characters, who has changed?

They'll probably just replace BB with some other character from the Nes final fantasy games, like a blue mage or something.

To put it simply, Red Mage. (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=030816)

That has to count for something, right?

yes, i do not think black belt should come back to life. although, i was VERY surprised that he did die. a little off topic, respondong to syka: i dont think cloud should replace BB because he already tried out and didnt make it.(though FIGHTER, of all people, judged him)

I would think the only reason to bring BB back, would be to kill him again, just so everyone gets the point.

Meister
05-01-2005, 12:35 PM
Nah, then everyone would be like "hey, Brian brought him back once, he can do it again, can't he?" If someone doesn't get the point by now... well, I wouldn't like to live that person's life.

There's the catch. How many people would have said the exact same thing about Black Belt before he died, I wonder. With this comic, you may think you know what's coming, but you never really do*. That goes for the small stuff just as it goes for the big stuff.

I wouldn't miss Thief or Redmage if either of them died suddenly o.o Though I think it -would- be a good idea replace Black Belt with a new character, possibly with a D&D 3.5 edition Paladin or something useful to be both fighter and cleric at the same time yes? ^^

you really enjoy being confrontational, don't you?

The difference are twofold:
first, black mage had a plot reason for coming back. He went to hell, took over it, and returned to the world of the living. No such luck for black mage, especially if we consider the idea that the afterlife is shaped by the persons belief, at which point black belt would enter nirvana or some such.

Second, what long term development would come from black mages death? A large amount of jokes wouldn't be able to occur, he wouldn't develop as a character, and nothing but a sense of 'he got what he deserved/wanted."

In short, Black Mages death/ressurection=plot device and well thought out joke, Black Belt death=plot point and permanent.

Enjoy.
