Virus help pls?
My wife seems to have gotten a virus. Um. Computer virus.
It looks like it is attached to her user account becuase she can log into the other accounts in Vista and it doesn't show up. However, when logging in to HER account it puts up those fakey 'your computer has been infected download this software to fix it' messages and icons that look just dissimilar enough from the windows security for us to know they aren't supposed to be there. I think it's commonly called the 'Windows Security Alert' virus, I don't know if there's only one that use that guise but I know they are generally pretty insidious. I've gotten this twice myself and been able to remove it but I use XP and I had to reformat the first time I got it. She is downloading AVG and Ad-Aware to see if she can isolate it and delete it but I don't know if that's going to be enough and I don't know for sure what else needs to be done in Vista to make sure this doesn't happen again. If it helps also there are suspicious files in her user account titled 'tnztvd.exe and tnztvd.bat, and xwvitu.bat' Also; She is SUPER careful browsing, our locale network is secure, and the only thing I used her computer for recently was iTunes. Any theories as to why this happened? The only thing I can think is maybe through my iPod somehow or over our network from my computer to hers (I'm careful but not quite as scrupulous as she is, but I use AVG and Ad-Aware and always clear cookies ... but on the other hand our computer are not networked). Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

AVG won't probably help i'd recommend using the infected account downloading hijackthis you will also want to get a trial copy of kaspersky. when you have installed hijackthis run a scan and post the log here.
edit: Links! http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro...-10227353.html (hijackthis) For Kaspersky you will probably need to follow their obnoxius email for a download link system. |

AVG may or may not help, but you should always have anti-virus software and AVG is a good one for free.
That said, just Google the virus and you should eventually find custom software specifically to remove it. That's what I ended up doing. There are also tutorials on how to remove it manually, but it involves messing with the registry.

Defineatly use Malwarebytes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/
The free version should defineatly get rid of this. If it doesn't fire another message cause I know how to get rid of this the old fashioned way- I think. |
