So we are clear

Red Ring of Death
Ok I got one of the original xbox 360. And after many years of faithful service. I got RRoD. So its been awhile, is there really any solution to this? Warrenty is obviously up and not sure they'd repair such an old model.

Also if your hard drive is still fine, you can get a brand new Arcade console for....$149.99? Probably sell/trade in half the crap that comes with it if you don't need them. |

You should check in with Microsoft. They might not refurbish you for free at this point, but it still might be cheaper than buying a whole new 360.
Then again, I think up to a year or two ago, Microsoft was still fixing the original 360s. Because of the massive issue, Microsoft might have given the units a retroactive lifetime guarantee. SWB

First check with Microsoft as any home fix will invalidate your warranty.
Now, if they can't fix it for free and you don't want to get a snazzy new revised XBox then there are a couple methods you can do that should work. I have two suggestions, one is permanent and I'm going to tell you to do regardless, one is much more dangerous and will only suggest if the first method does not work. The first fix is replacing the XClamps on the heat sink, they are bad. Theres a guide to do it here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Fix-...ithout-towels/ The idea is you replace the xclamps with screws and washers(along with optional air flow fixes) to hold the heatsink down better and not lead to the mobo warping, which is pretty much the main cause of failure. Once you get it out of the RROD it should stay that way with this fix. Anywho, if you do this and pop on the xbox and let it overheat for about 20 minutes, it should go back to normal once it cools down. If it doesn't here's where my other fix will come into handy. This fix may break your xbox further so be careful. I'm saying this is a last resort before buying a new one. It involves a heat gun, so hopefully you have access to one, if not you can get it pretty cheap, plus they are handy for a variety of applications. http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2...-death-repair/ Anywho, basically you insulate all the parts that may easily be damaged by the excess heat(caps and what not) and then overheat the gpu and cpu to make the solder reflow on the contacts and get it to where it's not detecting the fault anymore. You must be careful and follow the instructions on the guide to the t if it's going to have any chance of working. I would still replace the xclamps and optimize airflow if you can though as that is a more permanent fix. |

I'd suggest popping for a shiny new console. Whether it's the Arcade or the new slim model, having a new warranty is probably worth the price, and the new slim model has other benefits, like a performance boost, improved airflow, built-in 802.11n wireless, and reduced noise. It also has a direct Kinect port, where older models will need an adapter, if that matters to you.
Basically, looking at it this way, you could either a) send it in to be refurbished and solve exactly none of the underlying issues, b) do open heart surgery yourself and possibly screw it up and have to buy a new one anyway, or c) skip the middle steps and buy a better system that Microsoft redesigned to fix the underlying issues and improve in pretty much every area, which includes a shiny new warranty.

Microsoft will only replace your console within 4 years of purchase for the RROD. So if its been 4 years I'd shell out for a new console. Do a bit of research first though, it seems the slim may have a few issues, but I only have that from one source.

I've done the xclamp fix, and be warned you have to drill bigger holes in the metal case of the console, you you will need tools to do that. When I did the fix, my 360 went back to working fine, and stayed that way for well over a year. Then it started RRoD again, and I couldn't get it to work after that.

Hm, I think the only game I own out of my 60+ game collection has DRM, and that's Starcraft II.
I hate Starcraft II so, so much right now. Edit: On second thought, I suppose Steam is DRM, but I'd say it's an amenable, fair usage of the movement in general and is continually improving. Last edited by Azisien; 08-06-2010 at 12:26 AM. |
