Default Once, I Put Gin In My Pasta Sauce

My dad says there's flavors in tomato that aren't water or oil soluble, you gotta use alchohol to bring 'em out. I don't drink, though, so all the alcohol in the apartment belongs to my roommates. One of them mentioned there's a bottle that's been neglected, a bottle of Bombay Sapphire extra dry gin.

So one day I was making a bit of sauce for my pasta - I have spaghetti & sauce for dinner basically every day. I make one day's worth of sauce each day and pasta in large batches - when there's leftovers I put some directly in the sauce as it's cooking to reheat the noodles. I remember the neglected gin and my dad's advice, poured out a shot, and put it in the sauce. It was a new batch of pasta day so I made a bit more sauce than usual and put it on a whole lot of spaghetti, heaped up on a very large plate.

Goddamn I wish I'd known what gin was before I did that. It was the fourth* most awful thing ever put in my mouth, I managed to get through third of it before I had to pour a shot of undiluted lemon juice over it, which mercifully made it halfway palatable.

* The four most awful things that have been in my mouth:
  1. The gunk orthodontists use to make molds of your teeth.
  2. Tonic water (basically, quinine soda).
  3. This shitty pink goop I got prescribed when I had pneumonia.
  4. Tomato & gin sauce

Cooking sherry. Try that. Vodka makes a addition to any sauce.

Try having penicillin powder filled capsules you get for strep being accidentally emptied directly onto your tongue.

Vomiting with strep throat, best experience of my life.

I have a similar experience to that except it was ground up ibuprofen.

On the bright side all that stomach acid probably helped kill some of the bacteria in your throat.

Also the most awful thing that has been in my mouth was Duramax paint. I was hammering a lid closed for a customer when I worked at Lowe's and there was a little in the lip. It shot right out and into the corner of my mouth.

Ugh.

Terrible.

I'm sure the penicillin tasted worse, though.

Yes, alcohol can bring out flavor in a sauce.

No, not all alcohol is the same.

Next time you're making a tomato-based spaghetti sauce like that, try pouring in a bit of red wine instead. Even the cheap stuff that's not all that great for drinking is usually perfect for enriching the flavor of your spaghetti sauce.

On my own personal Index of Horrible Taste Experiences, the worst that leaps to mind immediately is sour milk, once. It's not all that bad in an absolute sense, but the bad part is where your tongue initially registers that nothing's wrong...and then it hits you. I'm sure I'll remember something worse just a few minutes after I post this, but that's the first I thought of.

A soda can filled with used cigarettes is probably my worst taste experience. Mistook it for my own drink, and it caught me completely off guard.

The most traumatizing however has to be drinking orange juice straight from the carton, and then realizing something fuzzy was suddenly in my mouth.

Naturally, this thread makes me want to share the most awful things I've had in my mouth.

1. Pure pain distilled into physical form. (See the pain thread.)
2. Fresh, sparkling coca-cola, chilled to the perfect temperature. Going the wrong way. (Nothing like the realization that you're enjoying the taste of your puke. It's actually the only time I've ever vomited for psychological causes. Although being already in the middle of vomiting may have helped.)
3. Beer. (It did send me on a murdering rampage, though to be fair that was not just because of the taste.)
4. A big gulp of pig's blood. (Orange juice straight from the carton is always a bad idea.)

Most awful thing I've ever tasted? Try rancid meat. Yeah, I'm never eating a sausage roll every again.

I swear, week old meat that has been covered in pastry so you can't tell that it's week old meat before you bite into it is the worst thing you can ever possibly taste.

I have never puked up as fast or as hard in my life.
