Computer Crash, BSOD on startup

So, my computer crashed to a BSOD recently, and now refuses to boot. It attempts to load windows, BSODs quickly, and kicks me back to choose to repair or try again.

I am in the middle of waiting for the windows repair to load (It's been like 20-30 minutes), and I am looking for other solutions as this does not seem to be working.

Safe mode does not work, it crashes as well.

I need my laptop quickly, so any suggestions?

Hrmm, that's unfortunate.

Have you tried to disable the automatic-reboot on BSOD? (F8 as it boots past POST should get a menu to pop up, and you should be able to select "Disable automatic restart...". This may also be visible if you're getting a menu to boot normally or choose safe mode already.) This may help in that you should then have time to jot down the BSOD error code and any other information.

There are some utilities you could try out to rule out hardware (memtest, running LiveCDs to make sure you can get to and see your files and all that, for example), but I am hesitant to just throw things at you for no reason.

Yeah, so, I found that, and want to know who the heck decided that not showing the error code was the best default. Turns out it can't find a bootable drive, but if I can actually get windows repair utility to load past the background image, I should be able to repair it.

My other, temporary, solution is to create an Ubuntu boot USB drive, and boot onto that to back up my files, then when I am in range of my Windows 7 cd, use that to repair.

Argh Windows Repair hurry up and load.

Stupid no loading screen. I have no idea if it's loading or frozen.

So, I got windows repair to load by forcing IT to start in safe mode via mashing the function keys while trying to load my repair partition.

Unfortunately, it only can do a clean reinstall, not actually repair. Possibly because, I realized, I'm using a different version of Windows 7 than came installed on my laptop.

So, I made an Ubuntu boot flash drive, am booting to that for now. I'm copying over all of my stuff onto a friend's external hard drive, and probably going to do a clean reformat. I meant to do one soon anyway, so this is a kick in the pants to do so.

I am back up and running, for those concerned!

I got ahold of my Windows 7 disc, opened up command prompt, and ran "Chkdsk /R C:". One bad cluster was found and repaired, apparently right where it needed to not be, if I wanted to boot.

I also, for good measure, ran the boot repair utility off the disc, which may have done something, but since it had minimal output I have no idea what it did.

In any case, if anyone is having the "Unmountable Boot Volume" error that I did, try those steps. I found the answer at http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2605/..._volume_error/

I ended up actually having to boot off of the Windows 7 disc in safe mode with command prompt, because for some reason non-safe mode wasn't loading. It might have been that if I gave it enough time, it would have loaded, but hey.

Safe mode isn't able to do the full recovery from a disk image, but since I didn't need to do that, it wasn't a big deal.
