Stealing AB's schtick.

The Gaia Forums
I know Gaia isn't really a popular subject here. Really I do, and I can no longer fault the negative opinion. I've been a member of the gaia forums about two months longer than the nuklearpower ones, and had always been able to at least tolerate them. They have a fun principle (you have an interactive avatar that you customize...okay, it's stupid, but I enjoy it), and it was large enough that there was always something going on. There were problems, but for the most part they were contained to certain areas, and I found the idea of 'enforced PG-13' to be admirable.
However, the last month has been a rapid decline. School is out, and while most forums get flooded with idiots who suddenly have free time, the effects have been more severe on gaia than the previous year. To illustrate my point, log onto gaia for all of 30 seconds, and go to their general discussion and chatterbox area. If you feel like spending an extra minute, check the 'rooms' at the casino. Almost all of it will be filled with threads that are so painfully n00bish as to make your eyes bleed. What really irks me about all this is exactly what I found admirable at first; the ToS. If you are going to have rules about enforcing a PG-13 forum, I dunno, use them. There are moderators in charge of these areas, I know for a fact they're being reported, but I have yet to see one shut down. It's incredibly ironic, that a thread where I point out things like this would result in large amounts of poorly typed "STFU!" flaming, followed by it being closed for being "Confrontational" (this is from observation, not personal experience), while half a dozen "Wood U cyber for Gold? LOL" threads are floating around. The problem has gotten bad enough that I am seriously considering quitting the forums, at least until the school year resumes. I'm interested in what the other NPF members think on this (besides a general disdain for gaia). As a side tangent, what would happen if the mods here were given a 12 hour run on gaia? All I know is I'd like to see the messages that would stem from that. If this belongs in off topic, feel free to move it.

The first three to six hours would be beautiful. Idiocy would be crushed. Ban-sults in the form of epic poetry would be created. Internet legends would rise and fall like the crescendo of a symphony performance, but then things would go awry. Shiney would be the first to snap. Whether you abide by the rules or not, you would be crushed. Your name could merely look strange to him and it would be gone. Whole sections of the board would be mass banned.
And the other moderators would follow quickly. Only destruction would follow in their wake, as the waves of stupidity slowly overwhelmed and destroyed their sensibility. It would be too much for any group as small and dedicated as we... Also: I like Gaia just because they're moderated shittily. If I ever feel like flaming someone in a poetic way and no one has screwed up enough to get a good ban-sult in awhile, I'll just go to chatterbox.

I'd LOVE to see our mods take a 12 hour run over there. Theyd probably ban EVERY SINGLE POSTER TO EVER POST THERE. and itd just be funny to see them come up with reasons. Eventually Krylo would probably say "Im banning you for...um...well I can ban you 'Nuff Said" and Shiney would say something along the lines of "whoa whoa whoa...you said your IQ was what? well thats a bit low for me so lets just ban Mr. Stupid here and Mrs. Dumbfounded over there and be done with this noncents!"
Then all would proceed as Krylo beautifully stated.

Time is something else.

I tried Gaia twice. And I failed miserably. I got too comfortable here, with structure, I guess.
And as for the mods taking over there for a few hours? I think Krylo is being optimistic. Stuff just moves way too damn fast. I give it 30 minutes before someone snaps, and 1 hour 14 minutes 37 seconds until someone just says "Fuck it all", and purges the entire SQL database. I think that's a much more resonable estimate.

Derrrrrrrrrrrrrp.

I wouldn't wait to snap. I'd just start banning right off the bat. I already know I would, because Rai goes to gaia every day and I am astounded at some of the idiocy I see in just the commissions forum.

Yeah, I'd start with wiping the entire database. Then I'd go to the pub. Eight mods are enough to handle those who re-register.

Note how the vast majority of threads consists of polls. Get an idea why we decided to get rid of them?
I like the Lord of the Rings idea. We're nine, the Fellowship were nine, we'd be up against masses of people stretching all the way to the horizon and past... it would work out just fine. Imagine... Meister: *bans a user with a post count of 100.000* shiney: "It still only counts as one!" |

I spent a lovely weekend milling about Gaia online, where I was adopted by a thirteen year old and offered cyber sex for fake money...
So it was pretty much like real life except I could log off! I didn't see how anyone could spend any amount of time "bumping" either. That phenomena was enough to send me into a frenzy of devastating flaming eloquence the likes of which I had scarcely witnessed, let alone perpetrated. I feel sort of bad for all the people I left hanging on Gaia, but I really saw no point whatsoever in being there. I can play dress up at home, and blue hair is only a trip to the salon away! |
