It actually looks like a poseable miniature, not a full real suit. Or perhaps even a CGI of the same grade as Beast Wars, which was entirely possible around the time that game was released.
Though granted, there probably is at least one fan who has made a perfect replica of the suit out there somewhere. There are bad odds against someone NOT making one.

Having watched it again I think that it is a toy, as mentioned. Beast Wars style CGI doesn't seem likely.

Uh, you guys are forgetting. They already made a full Samus suit. For the Metroid Prime commercial.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op-1liVGcxM With a Woman inside doing all the jumping and shooting and stuff. However its always been a theory of mine that while America has jumped on Metroids for what they are gameplay wise and their commercials, Japanese gamers have stayed away from them partially because of their gameplay but also because Nintendo didn't work hard enough to market them differently to Japanese consumers. The Metroid commercials for Japan always look the exact opposite of what Japanese commercials always look like. That works in America, but usually not in Japan...

They know their market...
Metroid just never appealed to a lot of Eastern gamers even back in Metroid 1's day. I guess this is more "Screw it... Let's give em another Mario game. That'll work. Meanwhile, let's make Samus our bread and butter in the US. We got the sex and violence for those crazy gun toting Americans." |

Still, the Metroid Prime commercial came way after Metroid II and Super Metroid. I'm not sure how there's 'already' been a suit a good ten years later. Quote:
I mean, okay, if you want to compare this and this, I wouldn't disagree, but you did say "Metroid" commercials.

Its a real suit, which had a real person in it. It then had tons of CG for effects and the environment and everything else to make it look like the game. So basically the only thing 'real' is her and the suit (and a few close up shots where there's little background). Quote:

I just thought you were looking for a real Samus suit from the beginning. So I provided. The one in the Metroid II video was obviously a combination of Animation and action figure puppetry type filming and the one in Super Metroid was live action acting with a breif flash of a woman that looks like Samus getting a Suit put on, but then Stop-Motion animation a la RoboCop 2 for a period of 2 seconds before the commercial ends. The Metroid Prime Commercial has a actual real full built suit, custom built to someones body so they can move and jump and perform 'Samus' actions. In other words, they could go appear at E3 in the thing and look like what you saw in the Commercial. If the person in the suit was the exact same size she was 7 years ago that is.

Okay, and now for something completely different: The point of the thread! I was trying to poke fun at japanese commercials and using Metroid as a prime example. What's not to love about Samus' landing noise being spelled out as, "Shuttak!", or "BONG!" when she blasts a creature? I like the Super Metroid commercial, mostly because the whole "Suit-Forming-Over-Body" just screams "Super Sentai" in hilarious ways.

Yeah, for a source, I couldn't help you. That would be looking back into IGN stuff from 5-6 years ago. I've tried to look back for articles on IGN from even a year ago and never find them. And yes, also stuff from around the time games came out, like RE1 remake or the GC/XBOX came out. IGN buries their articles.
All I can tell you is I saw it on IGN. Also I asked my friend about it when I saw this thread going 'wasn't there a commercial with a real Samus suit' and he went 'yeah, the Metroid Prime Commercial' reminding me. So Everything but the 5 year old IGN article is there really.
