Thread of Manly Tears
You know...there is that one scene in the game that can make you from shedding a simple man tear, to full on nose wiping crying. Games these days have that emotional impact now thanks to the advances in technology (though I won't argue when you say some games in the SNES era were moving). What were, are the games that bring you to tears.
Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core Ending. To me, the one scene where Zack is fighting for his and Cloud's life, and he falls in battle doing so. What scenes have an emotional impact on you? |

Yeah...Crisis Core made me shed some manly tears. Now all we need is Mondt to come around and we can go back to having manly crying discussions.
There were parts of FF IX that made me want to shed a tear. Parts. Oddly though, Aerith dying in FF VII had very little affect on me.

Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4's endings. Actually, pretty much every other cutscene in MGS4.
Also, FFX's ending, though the impact was utterly ruined by the atrocity otherwise known as FFX-2. Every Suikoden game I've played so far has at least one scene that resonates emotionally with me, but only Suikoden 2 had me in tears, when Nanami gets it. Finally, there's always a moment whenever I'm replaying Chrono Trigger when I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the nostalgic feelings running through my veins and I'm brought to tears. With CT in particular it's always a different scene every time I play it, as the game is too joyful to really have a scene that's tear inducing per se. It's more that moment when it hits me that I'm replaying the best RPG ever and nothing's ever topped it in the history of everything.

Secret of Mana 2's starting credits scene = Feeling tingly inside.
Same for nearly all cutscenes in Phantom Brave, especially towards the end. But crying? Actual crying? Nope. Never. I was quite saddened at the ending of some games ( Radiata Stories comes to mind instantly. You can pick a path that defines the endgame: You either stay an idiot soldier for the human side and kill everyone who isn't a human or you spend time trying to rally the forces to stop the destruction that humans are causing and try to help your friend who's going to be the host of the gold dragon which will destroy everything...But on the end, the silver dragon kills her before it happens. The protagonist throws himself at it, yelling "there was another way...There had to be!" and you fight him. ) but never to the point of crying. Sorry. Oh, wait, the last time I remember crying was because of Pikachu leaving in the first season of pokémon. I was...9?10? >_< Last edited by Meister; 09-15-2008 at 02:35 AM. |

What really got to me and made me shed Manly tears was in Chrono Trigger, Chrono died the first time. I was actually pissed I lost not only my main character, but for someone that suffered from Silent Hero Syndrome, he was pretty expressive.

I can honestly say that I've never cried in a game.
Though I came close in Spore. It was during a game where I was trying to be nice to everyone, but in between the eco-disasters, piracies and extortion from warlike races, I was having a hard time making ends meet. I still had 3 very successful colonies, however, and I was pretty proud of them. And then I ran out of money, prompting 2 empires to attack me. Every colony, including my homeworld, was attacked at once. I only saved 3 worlds. The fourth was empty of life by the time I got there. It was... crushing. Just the feeling of having invested all that time and effort into these worlds, watching them grow from barren wastelands of rock into utopias, and then having one destroyed by an unavoidable event... well, it changed my playing style a bit. Neither of the empires that attacked exist anymore. Nor are the planets they used to inhabit capable of sustaining life.

Every game ever. And they weren't manly tears, they were female tears. I cry so easily.
The games that most notibly come to mind... FF9 and 10's endings. I cried like a ninny for both of them. Mother 3. Holy cow, if you told me that the end of the game would make me cry before I played it, I wouldn't believe you, because I had played Earthbound and Earthbound was happy-awesome. The end of Mother 3 had me bawling like a baby. Lufia 2. When I think of games that have made me cry, this is the first game that comes to mind. I'll never forget sitting in the basement of my house, in a dark, crying as quietly as I could so that my brother wouldn't notice that I was crying over the ending. I think Lufia 2's ending is probably the saddest ending in any game I've ever played.

But another is, and don't laugh, when I first saw Aeris get skewered in FF7. Damn that white hair bishie. Also, name a scene of character development in FF6. The Boss' death in MGS3. I mean, she died for her freaking country and she in turn, forever labeled by history as a traitor And yeah, when Lavos pretty much killed everyone, and Crono does the Heroic Sacrifice to save everyone. And, there is a certain scene in KH1, whenI first played made me sad. Don't wanna talk about it. Last edited by Meister; 09-15-2008 at 02:35 AM. |

I'm pretty sure I teared up a little at the "Good Ending" of Shadow Hearts: Covenant, when Yuri chooses to die rather than loose his memories. Also, "The Miracle" cutscene was pretty sad, too.
I know there are some others out there, but I can't remember them off of the top of my head.
