Raze: Tear down tobacco lies! (Build up anti-tobacco lies.)
Am I the only one tired of these dumb-ass commercials and the blatant hypocrisy and lies they contain?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWlFbVNRXhM We know cigarettes are bad for you, you don't have to make shit up to enforce that point. We know they cause cancer (though I've heard that these studies were bullshit, haven't bothered to check), we know they destroy your lungs, blah blah blah. Every single person in America knows this. You don't need to fucking exaggerate it and go on about the tobacco companies are lying to you and shit, they're "trying to control you" "they don't want you to express yourself" "they want to kill you" Yeah, killing your customers is a great business model! This is a side-effect, so clearly it is their objective. And the "trying to control you" and deny you self expression thing? That's just right the fuck out of left field. It has no basis in reality. How is it people protesting arguably bad things have a tendency to end up being worse than the shit they're protesting? Like PETA. Just, what the fuck, man. |

I just ignore this crap till it goes away. Sometimes works, most of the time it doesn't.

You know, I clicked that link expecting to get good and angry about some seriously heavy-handed lies, like cigarettes being made of puppies and big tobacco holding an annual meeting to find ways to add more cyanide or include sarin or some crap and, uh, didn't find any?
I mean, it's a nice, light, fun ad that says, "hey, we don't HAVE to smoke!" And nothing they say is untrue. Cigarettes DO come in candy flavors and all that jazz, and if you think it's not to sell cigarettes, especially to those who haven't tried them yet, you're kidding yourself. Same goes for cigarette companies always being in the market for new customers. It goes for any corporation. Seriously, I'd say this is a tenth as heavy-handed as Truth commercials and can see it being effective at reaching the teen/young adult audience. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Yeah... that's way below the propaganda line, and way better than the mac vs. pc commercials addressed in the other thread.

I couldn't find the particular commercials I was talking about on youtube, but the worst offender I've seen is the one with the girl tied to the chair with the projector and stuff.
The one I linked is pretty bad, though. It mentions the "they want to rape your creativity" shit, which in my opinion is dumber than "they want to kill you" which at least has some (albeit tenuous) basis in reality. |

Well there is a whole lot of "Show how individual you are by NOT SMOKING."
Which IS stupid. Whether you smoke or not you're pretty much just as much an individual as the next person. Though it also comes with an undercurrent of rebellion. Rebel against society by not smoking! But, shit, wait, society doesn't want us to smoke. Well now it's even stupider. I mean, I'll agree it's not nearly as bad as was described/Truth ads/Anti-Drug ads/meth songs, but it's still pretty stupid.

Yeah and they are outlawed in alot of the states because of the lack of filters to get the flavor in the mouth.

I haven't watched the video, but honestly, I have to applaud their creativity if they've managed to invent some kind of evil that the Tobacco companies HAVEN'T commited.

At any rate, with the new legislation, they'll be illegal, anyway, and this ad is already a year old. I frankly see this as pretty harmless and refreshing for an anti-tobacco ad, given how petty and small Truth got as time wore on. Seriously, going in the middle of the street in front of an office building and shouting with a megaphone about fire-retardant cigarettes? Pretty petty and small.
