Last night my PS3 froze up. I watched about 4-5 hours of Star Trek DVDs on it back-to-back and then popped in a PS1 disc for about 30 minutes or so. I selected to 'Quit Game' after pressing the 'PS' button and my screen went blank. I let it sit for 60+ seconds like this before I decided to turn it off by pressing and holding the power button.

It has done stuff like this before once or twice and recovered just fine - It honestly hasn't given me many problems. I'm concerned that there may be a problem with it, but then again it's possible it may just be overheating from constant useage. (I play it everyday to every other day for at least an hour or two). Is it possible I've cased some sort of irreperable damage? Is it reacting normally to overheating?

I have not noticed any problems yet but I'm wondering if, other than just not letting it play for so long, there is anything I can do to keep it from completly failing.

I've got the original 60 gig model and it freezes from time to time on me but it's never out right broken. I think it's probably a ram issue, at least for me, because it tends to happen when doing memory intensive things in games (like Fallout 3) or trying to switch out of a game to the PS menu. You might be running into something similar. I also barely use my PS3 compared to your usage.

While I can't say my problems got anywhere near as bad as you two, I did start to have some issues with my PS3 a few months back. I took a air canister / dust remover & applied it to every opening I could find.

I also started leaving my PS3 in full shut down when I wasn't using it.

If this doesn't work, I hear that Sony does refurbish the old 60GB, but not on the cheap.

Also, keep in mind your room temperature & if you've got no air conditioning, consider avoiding gameplay. And you might want to move the PS3 so it gets better air circulation.

This is pretty standard on the older issues, honestly. Mine does it sometimes as well, after prolonged use.

Basically, just give it a rest every now and again.

after about 3 hours of gaming in this heat (90+F) is too much for the poor thing.

Psh. Just turn it off long enough to go make yourself a sandwich. Should be fine after that.

I was gonna go to the gym, but this sounds easier. When my wife starts complaining about all the weight I'm gaining, I'll tell her it's your fault.

I've got the same problem, but whenever I restart it it always says this error message thing when I restart it, but I just continue on as normal, and it's fine. It's usually when I try to watch videos with the browser that it acts up.

Or when I play a Bethesda game.
