Molyneux Apologizes for Fable!
http://allboards.lionhead.com/showthread.php?t=83152
Wow. That's all I can say. What do you guys think about this and what do you think are its implications for how devs should respond to community and critic complaints?

Back, But Gone Soon

About That:
You put it correctly and aptly with, "Wow." I remember reading in another interview that he was still trying to implement new features during the end, but had to shut himself up due to the production staff, or "suits" complaining. I expect a Fable 2 (Not really "Fable 2" as the name, but something more...catchy) that he'll implement all the features that he wanted in it for a Next Gen system or PC, so he'll have more processor speed and what-not. As for how Dev's should respond to community and critic complaints, I'm somewhat at a loss. I would imagine that they'd take in consideration what they'd say, and fix the problems for their next game. Before using the camera control was implemented in the latest Hurricane pack, I remember the head of Team Ninja (Itigaki? Bah can't remember his name..) stating that the Camera not being able to be controlled gave the game a more cinematic feeling. Of course, he changed that so people couldn't use it as an excuse when they died. For PC games however, there are always mod's and patches, while Console games look like they may go that route (hard drives + internet = patches), there still will be unfixable things.

Zero: I think you're write on the Gaiden director. I think.
Anyways, yeah. It's really interesting seeing devs start really RESPONDING to community concerns. I've always considered Polyneux a pretty great dev, but this increases my respect of him VERY much. This is something that happens with him a lot though. He promises way more than ever makes it into the game and ends up adding the cut features (or at least some of them) in a sequel. See Black and White.

FRONT KICK OF DOOM!

Itagaki.
Look, I'm all for people wanting patches and stuff like that. But it's not for me. I want my game complete right out of the box. If not, I'll find time for games elsewhere. Which is why I'm prolly done in terms of newest game systems. |

You see, this is why people rarely complain about Nintendo's delays. They only do that to make sure the games are good (that is, when they aren't rushing out so-so sequels to Mario Party or Pokemon).
I just hope more game developers take these words by (I think) Miyamoto into consideration: that a delayed game will eventually be good, but a bad game will be bad forever.

Beinsane: (agreeance)
My Lead Airbag: Like I said, though, this happens with Molyneux a lot. There's huge delays and they still end up having to cut out some or lots of the things he promised.

I didn't realize that. Maybe he has a problem of simply throwing every idea into the game and never plans ahead for how to do it. Maybe he should try to work for Nintendo to learn how to delay and make the game good.

So you're saying Fable is not good?
BAD! BAD! BAD BAD BAD! Fable is good. It's just not as complex as we expected. |
