I managed to fix the problem by turning it off and then on again.
That said, what the precise fuck happened to start that in the first place?

Sometimes happen with my laptop on the M, 5, and W keys. I usually just need to hit them again and blow down between the keys.
If it's a desktop keyboard, I'd say time to clean the keys. :|

Doesn't sound like a hardware problem since the keys themselves worked. Did the lowercase letters just not show up, or did they automatically convert into uppercase?
What programs were you running at the time? |

Maybe there's a virus that is purposely giving a troll quirk for the lolz (I don't know, I don't hack)? I don't think that it could be a keyboard problem but I'm not versed on how keyboard communication works.
I'd say to do a virus check, then do it again if the key sticking starts happening again. A good way to confirm that it's not the keyboard is to switch another keyboard in (any geek has at least five in some dusty corner, so don't say you don't have any spares) and test with that. |

The letters themselves wouldn't show up, so I had to use uppercase to substitute. (Of course, if I'd pressed caps lock and then used shift, I'd have had lowercase letters just like it had never happened.) And I was running nothing unusual--just my Firefox and Skype (which is always on), as far as I remember.

I am assuming some function got called / toggled.

If it happens to you or anyone else in the future, I came across this list of possible "fixes" that might be worth trying. Edit: Also, turning on the on-screen keyboard may both give you a short-term means for using the correct case and of seeing if additional keys are being "pressed".
