Anything Like This Out There?
I was just thinking to myself about a game I wish I could play.
Basically it's a "survival horror movie video game". Survival Horror game. However it's not like the other SH games which usually have you up against an army of undead and/or dinosaur and/or alien and/or et cetera. Instead it'd be you up against one, maybe two main monsters and that's it. Nothing else. In a large isolated facility with a team of soldiers that you can command around. Basically you'd setup in the main control room and from there order your soldiers about, whereupon you can manually control any of them. Sending them in large groups allows for greater security, but also increases friendly fire if the monster(s) pops out to gnaw upon someone. Said monsters, if more than one, would have varying personalities as the game progresses, sometimes doing solo hunting and other times teaming up. Soldiers would have mental status as well. If they get stressed, such as if you send a single guy out by himself and the monsters decide to f' with his brain by banging on the walls, doors and appearing/disappearing rapidly about him, he'll start to go crazy and randomly shoot at every little shadow/noise(which could be very dangerous to the allies). On top of that he might randomly run, disobeying direct orders, or just kill himself(randomized results!). Is there anything out there like that, or am I looking for a type of game that simply isn't made yet?

I think Clock Tower would be the closest thing to the you-against-one situation you are describing. As for everything else, I have no fucking idea.

I don't know if there is a game that has combined all the elements you describe...but there are games that have parts of it.
Besides the above post, from my understanding (I haven't played it) Haunting Ground also does the one-on-one thing. From what I've heard (again, haven't played them) the X-Com series could fill your need to order troops around against monsters...but more than one...and they are aliens.

I can't comment on The Thing but yes Clock Tower 3 and Haunting Ground are both survival horror themed games where you are being chased by one creature/badguy throughout an area while you attempt to proceed further into the game. However instead of using teams of guards to protect yourself, you have other means such as items that will temporarily stun the creatures and a pretty neat mechanic of hiding behind things to throw your pursuer off track.

^ Copied into brain so hardcore.
Wait like 4 years and I'll make get to work on making it. Like, this almost has priority over my other ideas.

The HalfLife2 Mod 'The Hidden' is kinda like what you were asking about Arlan. Except there's no NPC's, its an all-human multiplayer. So, instead of 'Soldiers you can order around,' you're just working with your standard CounterStrike-ing numbnuts. Also, any good map will have plenty of ways for the person playing the Hidden to scary/ambush people who go off alone. Most maps are pretty cramped unfortunately, so you're never really very far from help or anything, so there isn't TOO much stress.
Personally, I like being the guy who freaks out and starts shooting around at random the first time someone dies, then runs and hides in a closet.
