History's Strongest Dilettante

Kamen Rider Kabuto
So I just finished watching Kamen Rider Kabuto all the way through. This is the second Kamen Rider series I've seen, and I have to say, I think I'm as impressed by this as I was by 555. Character development was superb, especially on the part of Kagami and Tendou. Actually, their relationship with each other was very nicely done too. In fact, I think the character relationships were probably the strongest point in this series.
Some very tear-jerking moments in this one. This is the category where I'd say it beats 555. Tsurugi's finale, the return of Gon's memories, Tsurugi's finale, a few of Tendou's scenes later in the series, Tsurugi's finale, and almost everything that happened with Kagami after he found out about Tadokoro. Did I mention Tsurugi's finale? Seriously; the amount of points Kabuto scores for making me care about Tsurugi is ridiculous. Where 555 seemed to be exploring hate and isolation (and I believe it is the best superhero take on these themes I've ever seen), I think dehumanizing "the enemy," is one of Kabuto's major themes. What I like in Kabuto, is that while it didn't really start off very serious (and I mean serious as in being something more than escapism), once you get to the latter section of the series, you start to realise that the ideas being expressed were always there, just not expressly noted. There are a lot of minor details that play into it, I think. The comic episodes were very well played. I loved the cooking battles. Dark Kitchen, indeed. My one complaint is with Daisuke and Gon. I'm okay with Gon coming back in the way she did, but they really got pushed off to the side after that (save for one or two episodes). Also: It would have been nice to see an explanation for the Kick Hopper and Jump Hopper Zecters. Actually, this series could have done with a few more episodes just to tie up some loose ends. Maybe they will in the movie, which I am just about to watch, but I don't think so. I'm not too hard on the series for this, however, as I don't see any episodes that I'd say were just wasted time. I still think Faiz has the coolest costume ever. I've made an android style character with an entire power-set based around the fact that I wanted glowing lines on his body like that.
