Help with MSN messenger and IE

I recently disabled IE (It has a virus or something, it kept opening pages whenever I connected to the internet with anything) by setting up a proxy server that didn't work (0.0.0.0, port: 80). It worked fine, and made my computer run faster, and it hasn't restarted by itself since I did this.

However, windows live messenger uses IE's proxy settings, so it won't connect to the internet. Does anyone know a way around this?

Not directly, but if it's an option you could download a different client for MSN such as Trillian. It can connect to AIM as well.

You probably should remove whatever your IE has caught, too. From the description it sounds like browser-hijacking spyware. I have never had a problem with Spyware Search & Destroy.

Edit: Okay, running spyware s&d now. Already found a few. I KNEW IT. But still, IE makes my computer lag a lot more and runs slower than the browser I use now (Maxthon). I still don't want to use it. Guess I'll get Trillian.

Then again, trillian can't do webcam stuff or receive files from people on msn or aim, I don't think...

Trillian can do video chat, but only if you get the Pro version, which will cost ya. File transfer should work; personally I do have big problems with it but that may or may not be Trillian's fault.

I'm not sure I completely understand the problem -- by using the fake proxy server, what did that fix? Was IE making pop-ups or something? That should help us figure out how to fix your other problem.

My first thought is get rid of your proxy settings, and then set Maxthon as your default browser -- if the spyware is in IE, it makes me think that it wouldn't be able to connect to the internet through Maxthon, but I'm not sure.

meebo.com is what i use, and you dont even need to download anything. they just added video capability, thoguh I'm not sure how well it works. Also skype has free video, chat, and voice.
