Things you hate about VIDEO GAMES! 2: The March of the Nerd Queen
Quote:
Things I hate about video games? Something that I would like to see more in video games is giving the game mechanics some kind of semblance of realism in the context of the work. I don't like how Final Fantasy saves your game just because. Say, Metal Gear? It kind of makes sense that Naomi/Rose/Para-Medic is saving your record. Or how about EarthBound? I always thought that little touch with your father was really cool. Last edited by Regulus Tera; 05-19-2008 at 03:58 AM. |

Well, Assassin's Creed went all out to explain why every little conventional game mechanic, from menus to health bars, existed in the context of the story and Assassin's Creed sucked so maybe there is a correlation there.
Or maybe all the neat ideas in the world could make Assassin's Creed fun. We should conduct some tests.

It would be funny that they're so convinced it's going to suck, if it wasn't scary. The amount of negative energy they put out could make the sun collapse into a neutron star. . . they go around wishing for the programmers to die of cancer and physically threatening people who would buy it. You'd think it'd be enough to not play the game, but they'd rather stop anyone in the world from playing it if it was in their power. Which is one thing I hate about video games: Fan-atics.

And to be fair the "open world exploration" thing was pretty cool, it's just that it gave you nothing to work with once the sandbox thing got old.
It was the GTA3 minus the running around and shooting people. Now they can make a great game off it. Also, I think my favorite thing in Earthbound's save system was easily how when the credits rolled and it showed all the characters, "Dad" was a ringing phone. That was funny.

Super load times. I don't know how easy these would be to get rid of but I'm sure there should be someway to get rid of them. We have these huge ass machines and I still have to wait forever for levels to load.
Also unskippable cutscenes. Sure you may think your story is the greatest story ever told but if I don't want to watch I don't want to watch it. Last edited by Professor Smarmiarty; 05-19-2008 at 05:22 AM. |

Actually that's one thing about video games that annoys me. When did they get rid of the cast of characters after the credits? I enjoyed that. I mean games like FF12, Wind Waker or DQ8 where you've got a bestiary don't need it sure, but I remember being disappointed when I beat Yoshi's Island and it didn't have one. It's small but I always thought it was a nice touch especially when they were clever about it like in the above Earthbound example or in DKC's little slapstick sketches.

BHS just reminded me of another little annoyance; loading bars (or lieing bars as I now call them). Allow me to explain; have you ever noticed how sometimes a loading bar will fill up, but then you still sit there for another 10-20 seconds doing nothing as the disk whirs and buzzes in the tray? And you're left thinking, "come on! The levels loaded already, let's get this show on the road!" But no, the bar's full, but the game isn't loaded, so what's the point of the loading bar? Isn't it supposed to tell you how much is left to load? Shouldn't it fill entirely and then instantly load up? Then why the hell doesn't it!? And of course sometimes, the game will load the level before the bar's entirely full, as if it's trying to pretend it's doing you a favour by skipping some loading. No you're not, now you're just being a lieing bastard and we don't need it. Either remove loading bars entirely or make them work properly.

One thing that really gets me is when game developers in RPGs make bosses "hard" by giving them the ability to wipe your entire party in one fell swoop (I'm looking at you Guild Wars, and most secret uber bosses in the Final Fantasy series).
At certain points, it gets down to luck, or even having to spend large sums of cash on healing items or something and ending up having to use it all up just on that fight. Oh, and same goes for those annoying spells that leave your character at one HP with a complete disregard for everything. I just hate that crap.
